Mangaluru, Oct 27: Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL) inaugurated Vigilance Awareness Week on October 26, reaffirming its commitment to transparency, probity, ethical governance and accountability in all spheres of its operations.
Addressing the gathering, Mundkur Shyamprasad Kamath, managing director, MRPL, emphasised that vigilance is a collective responsibility and must be exercised with fairness, objectivity and justice.
Citing the cooperative movement spearheaded by Verghese Kurien and Tribhuvandas Patel through AMUL, he observed that probity flourishes when systems treat people fairly. He reminded employees that the plants they operate, public funds they manage and contracts they award are responsibilities entrusted to them in the national interest.

Nandakumar Velayudhan Pillai, director (Refinery), highlighted that integrity must guide everyday decisions rather than remain confined to formal observances. Drawing upon Aesop's fables, the life of former prime minister late Lal Bahadur Shastri and the timeless principle of Satyameva Jayate, he observed that honesty may not always bring immediate rewards, but its greatest reward is peace of mind.
Devendra Kumar, director (finance), spoke about the evolving approach to governance and financial management, where integrity and efficiency must complement each other. He noted that government reforms and improved systems have shifted the emphasis from merely preventing financial losses to optimising resources and maximising public value.
Mohammed Ali Shihab. A, IAS, chief vigilance officer, in his address, described probity as fundamental to nation-building and institutional trust. He reminded employees that every rupee lost through inefficiency or corruption represents a missed opportunity to build a school, road or hospital.
As part of the inaugural programme, messages from the President of India, Prime Minister of India and Central Vigilance Commission were read out by the N Anandha Kumar, ED (Refinery), P Sujith, ED (Projects) and Dr Deepak Prabhakar P, ED (Marketing), respectively.
