4. WMO Greenhouse Gas

According to the World Meteorological Organisation, CO2, CH4 and N2O had increased to record levels in 2025. In its Bulletin No. 22, the WMO warns of an increase in the levels of these gases, leading to long-term warming of the Earth’s atmosphere. The bulletin, which was published on 27 October 2026, also talks about the need for monitoring the climate impacts of the global energy transition.

The main reasons are the burning of fossil fuels, deforestation, farming, industrial action and waste disposal. There exist natural carbon sinks which take up some CO2 released into the atmosphere.

However, their effectiveness depends on the environment.

The intense El Niño of 2023–24 caused droughts and dry plants, which lowered land ecosystems’ efficiency of carbon absorption.

The World Meteorological Organisation also warns that continuing the use of fossil fuels and altering the absorption of CO2 by the oceans and land might contribute to more releases of CO2 into the atmosphere in 2026.

7. World Polio Day 2026

World Polio Day is marked every year on 24 October as an attempt to create awareness about poliomyelitis and help in the eradication of the disease by using vaccination all around the globe. The theme of World Polio Day in 2026 will be “Together, We End Polio,” which stresses the need for collaboration amongst governments, health professionals, communities, and international organizations. While vaccination has led to the eradication of the wild poliovirus from most of the world, there still remain some parts where the virus persists.

What Is Polio?

Polio, also known as poliomyelitis, is a highly contagious viral infection that can lead to paralysis of the affected person. The virus usually infects children under the age of five, but adults who have never received a vaccine can also get it.

The infection spreads mostly by the fecal-oral route through contaminated water and food. Sometimes, the infection affects the nervous system, causing paralysis.

Treatment of polio does not exist; vaccination is the best protection against polio. The vaccine prevents both polio disease and paralysis.

Symptoms of Polio

Most of the poliovirus infections do not have any symptoms. If there are symptoms, they can include,

  • Fever, headache, and tiredness.
  • Pain and stiffness of muscles, especially of the back and limbs.
  • Muscle weakness.
  • Paralysis and breathing problems (in severe cases).
