Mumbai police tighten firecracker sale and storage rules ahead of Diwali until Dec 2

Mumbai, Nov 4: Mumbai Police have tightened restrictions on the sale, storage and transportation of firecrackers in public places ahead of Diwali, making a valid police licence mandatory for such activities.

The restrictions will remain in force from November 3 to December 2 across the Brihanmumbai area under the Mumbai Police Commissionerate.

The order was issued by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) and Executive Magistrate Akbar Pathan under the Maharashtra Police Act, 1951, to prevent public inconvenience and potential safety hazards.

As per the directive, no person or establishment can sell, possess, display or transport firecrackers for commercial sale in public places without obtaining a licence from the designated police officer or the state government.

The order specifically prohibits the unauthorised sale and storage of firecrackers, public display of fireworks and transportation of firecrackers for sale without the required permission.

The restrictions have been imposed under Sections 33(1)(h) and 10(2) of the Maharashtra Police Act. Violators will face legal action under the applicable provisions, officials said.

The move aims to ensure that firecracker-related activities are carried out with proper authorisation and to maintain public order and safety during the festive season.
