Mangalore: St Aloysius College Bans Burkha in Classroom, Allows Headscarf

Mangalore: St Aloysius College Bans Burkha in Classroom, Allows Headscarf

Special Correspondent
Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore

Mangalore, Apr 27: St Aloysius College (autonomous) in the city has passed a rule prohibiting Muslim girl students from wearing burkha inside the classroom. The rule has been included in the prospectus and will come into effect from the next academic year.

Speaking to Daijiworld, a reliable source from the college faculty said that the rule prohibits students from wearing burkha only inside the classroom, and not in the campus. Burkha will not be allowed during examinations also.

However, they are allowed to wear headscarf at all times, even in the classroom, he added.

The new rule comes in the wake of an incident wherein a girl student was caught cheating during the last semester exams. The girl had allegedly hidden six foot-rulers inside her burkha, with answers written all over them. The girl later left the college even though she had been asked to return.

Also, the rule is in place to ensure that all students adhere to uniforms designated to each of the departments. It is said that many students wear burkha in the classroom, which hides the uniform and thus violates the dress code. However, as per the new rule, they are allowed to wear headscarf along with the uniform.

Speaking to Daijiworld, campus minister Fr Francis Almeida reiterated that from the next academic year, students will not be allowed to wear burkha in the classroom and during examinations. "They should not cover their faces or wear burkha during the class. But they can wear headscarf and also come in burkha to the college," he said.

Reacting to the step, a Muslim student in the college, who did not want to be identified, told Daijiworld that there was nothing good about the rule. "When T-shirt was banned earier, it was a good step as it is not a decent way to dress in a co-ed college. But what is wrong in wearing burkha which covers the whole body?" she said.

When told about the copying incident, she agreed that it was fine to form such a rule to avoid malpractice, but that banning it in classroom did not make sense.

She further said, "In St Aloysius, there are hardly 10-15 students who wear burkha to college, though many wear headscarf. Out of them, less than 8 students wear burkha full time...others remove it as soon as they enter the campus. Such a small number of students should not have attracted such a rule."

A lecturer in the college said that educational institutions in the region expect the students to adhere to the dress code. Burkha is banned in some of the other institutions also, he added.

The dress code for Muslim students has been raging debate over the recent years. Last August, a student in Moodbidri's Jain College had to stop attending classes for not being allowed to wear headscarf. The incident had snowballed into a major controversy, with the girl approaching higher authorities for justice. In another incident in 2009, Sri Venkataramana Swamy (SVS) Degree College, Bantwal took a similar action against one of its students, but later compromised and allowed her to wear headscarf.

You just need a reason to point at a reputed institution.
I have studied Aloysius college. I can vouch that they are most religious tolerant institution and respect women more than my community does(Muslims I mean does).

I wonder why is no one talking abt the girl who cheating wearing a respectful attire like "hijab" when a muslim girl doesnt respect that why do u expect a non muslim institution to respect?

As a country progresses and people become prosperous and more educated, they move away from fundamentalism, but clearly our country is going in the wrong direction, we are becoming more fundamentalist and religious by the day. Religion should be a very personal thing and should be kept out of public domain. What if one person turns up in a burkha, another in a Shakes robe, another in saffron robe and so on...what will the classroom look like....Lord save our country by giving us sense and making each one of us moderate and tolerant.

Further to my earlier comments on this issue, I fully endorse the opinion of Jude. Indeed it is a pleasure to go thru' the comments of some of our enlightened Muslim folks who understand the whole issue and have taken it positively. One should appreciate that the SAC management have done what is in the best interets of the instituion, tis faculty and more so for the students themselves. For a lecturere nothing can be worse than addressing a lady covered from Head to Toe ! he would rather speak to the wall instead - have not these negative commentators learnt the art of communication wherein one has to see the facial expression / body language - so follow the dress code in the class room - keep the burkhas on 24/7 till you enter - what more do you need ?

St. Agnes too follows this procedure - if this is too much, please look for a college that will accommodate your whims and fancies. Comparing the Nun's dress (Habit) to a Burkha is heights of ignorance - next you will tell the Jesuits who run this August institution to wear Lungi / kurtha with a skull cap !!!!!

I see the comments of a lot of enlightened muslims who understand reality here, but there are so some idiotic and fundamentalist comments which are uncalled for. The college while making the announcement could have used another word instead of BURQA, which has aroused some of these feelings. However wearing of the burqa is not banned in the college and inside the campus. The college has a valid point when it says that the burqa will not be allowed inside classrooms, but muslim girls can still use the scarf to cover their heads. They have also given valid reasons for this decision.

Nobody is interested in outraging the modesty of a muslim girl inside a classroom where girls of all other religions also attend, secondly modesty is not a restricted domain of muslim women only. Giving it a religious colour is plain stupid. Many people here are advising nuns not to wear their habit. If you guys have a problem with it, please stop sending your girls to institutions run by nuns. It is that plain and simple. You cannot enter my house and ask me what to do.

We are not living in Stone Age lot of things have changed with the time, If any girl cover her body and wear head scarf would not be enough why people insist to allow Abhaya/Burkha inside the class room. Olden days women they do not study or work now things are changed we accepted the change with time. Such silly issue why we are making big fuss. By seeing the various comments, i could draw a conclusion that people those who stay outside india whether Hindu/ muslim/christain, respect a single human religion. We indian must respect the country's rules and regulation, not indulging in baseless religious comments which may lead to communal. wherever they stay, they must obey the rules and regulation of that particular institution/nation.

If they dont like, let them go whereever they feel comportable. we indian follow secularism and respect each and every religion.and must stick on that. We must appreciate our country that, nothing is imposed lawfully as some countries like saudi do compulsion in wearing burkhas for non muslim community also. Hence dont arise any communal issuses and live peacefully and respect the human beings.

Let us realize that education is not only about getting a piece of paper called degree but education is about learning and understanding life, the world, and the etiquette of living.
Dear St. Aloysius college management – Would you please look at the dressing code of Highly respected mother Mary (peace be on her) , Look at the dressing code of Mother Teresa and please look at the dressing code of thousands of Christian Nuns……………what you think of them, we Muslims respect such dressing codes. How come that you are biased and expressing your double standard to dignified Muslim girl students in your college who respectfully cover their body with dignified dressing code like burkha. Are you dare enough to ask nuns to remove their head cover or their traditional dress? Please ask your inner souls are you will be comfortable if your own grown up girls wear tight jeans or t-shirts or short skirts or transparent dresses and roam around without giving any respect to social ethics? What kind of society you wish to establish? Why are you not objecting Christian nuns with white burkhas? Why only objecting Muslim girls with black burkhas?
In regard to the class rooms and in the Examinations Halls – yes students either boys or girls should not hide the answers with them and copy the same in the examination halls. You said that you have found one Muslim girl hiding the answer and copying the in the examination hall – for that reason you cannot blame the burkha. You can catch the culprits and take appropriate actions. Please study all the previous of copying cases in exam halls, you will find so many examples how students boys or girls hiding the answers taking the use of their dresses. You can appoint the special SUPERVISORS in exam halls, catch the culprits and take appropriate actions, but you cannot tell the boys and girls that you cannot wear dress while coming to the exam halls. May be while entering the exam halls, the female supervisors can ask the female students to lift off their face cover for identification, after identification process, later in the examination halls if they put up the face cover or lift the face cover, it is left to the sisters. Nobody can compel them.
Islam outlines a dressing code of modesty. Burqa, Hijab, Niqaab, abaya, jilbaab, salwar Khameez – these are some of the terms used for Islamic Clothing which helps to safeguard the modesty and dignity of our sisters.
Muslims believe that God has full Wisdom and knows what is best for us.

In the Qura’n Allah tells the believers to “lower their gaze and be modest”. Specially it says: “Say to believing men that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty that will make for greater purity for them and Allah is well acquainted with all that they do. And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty and that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what must ordinarily appear therof that they sh

I would please request the school/college administrations not to indulge in religion politics.

Folks,I feel the management should have told 'any dress which covers the face will be banned' instead of pointing the word 'Burkha'. Just mentioning 'burkha' is discrimination. Even the nuns wear same long gown as Burkha but in different colour. So the management should make clear whether it's allowed in classroom or not. apart from this, i totally agree the decision by the college. they even let the girls to wear headscarfs. That will be totally fine.

Mr. Aravind Shetty, yes nobody should go to college to promote their religion. What do you want to say about the bajarangi students who were saffron threads to their wrists and big Tilaka (Naama) on their forehead?? Don't throw stones at others if you are staying in a glass house.

Dear Mr. Shameer, Abu Dhabi, Mr. AR Mohammed, KSA, Mr. Nawaz, Mangalore/dubai, There is nothing in the Holy Bible that a woman should wear head to toe covering.  Nuns have chosen a secluded life, entirely dedicated to God & they cover their head. They don't cover their face & hands with gloves.

Now a day many nuns R only wearing sari which covers their full body (Note mere wearing a sari and salwaar will not cover everything). Hence it is chosen to remain so & not a compulsion.

Isaac's proposed wife Rebecca came all the way to Isaacs dwelling place without wearing veil & she did not cover her head. Only after inquiring with Isaac's servant she covered her face with a veil. I quote from Bible
Genesis 24: 65. For she had said unto the servant, What man is this that walketh in the field to meet us? And the servant had said, It is my master: therefore she took a vail, and covered herself.Unquote.

2ndly a woman should cover her head while she is in a worship place or while praying. StPaul writes I quote 1 Corinthians Chapter 11:5 But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven. Unquote.

This verse clearly says while a woman is under prayer. Christian scriptures never say a woman should wear head to toe always when she is outside of the prayer or a prayer house.

Genesis 24:65 clearly says as obedience& 1 Corinthians Chapter 11:5 says only on while she is in a prayer house or a worship house.

Its a decision of College management with good cause. And what is the need for wearing Burka in class can anyone explain when burka is not a part of Uniform also when we were going to colleges few years back no one was wearing burka during class hours. Common we mangaloreans are becoming too communal . We should respect each and every one then only we will be a good followers of GOD . And not by acting like cheap people with all these unnecessary issues. And if Muslim Learders or Community feels that it is really necessary for Muslim girls to wear a Burka , in Schools and colleges and without that if they are not Muslims then we are sorry they should opt for better options.

If one student like to wear Burqa instead of cleavage showing outfit what is wrong with that. Why can’t you look at Burqa as one kind of dress? It is not mandatory to wear particular color or design, basic thing is to cover her body such a way that does not draw sexual attention.

Whoever it may be, any so called Educational Institutions should know their limits before Deciding & Implementing any Rules & Regulations, without being bias and also without any ulterior motives.

The Term Education means is spreading Knowledge to the Masses thru their so called Institutions to the Humanity without any Caste Or Creed. Nobody has the right to impose any sort of Dress Code to any Humanbeings, provided it is Obscene or Exposes Nudity or Indecencent.

Not to name, there are lot of So Called Educational Institutions with Communal & Sadistic State of Mind, who use their so called Educational Institutions in the Pretext of Discipline (though they themself do not practice Discipline) Impose some Dress Code of their "Choice" on the Students & Teachers who join their Schools Or Colleges for Education Or Service, forcibly, thinking themselves with A Very High Rate Of Arrogancy, as if, they are the One & Only Educational Instituition of Repute, available in this Planet, like a FROG IN THE WELL???

Hence, all My Respected Fellow Human Beings, Please Love & Respect Each & Every Human Beings As The Finest Creatures Created By Our Creator "ALMIGHTY GOD" in this Beutiful & Miraculous Universe,to *LIVE & LET LIVE*, rather than finding fault and mud slinging on each and every fellow Human Beings, with Jealous and Hatred. Once when I was waiting in Riyadh Airport’s departure lounge to travel to another country, I noticed a woman wearing burqa which would not reveal even an inch of her body. When I was on the queue to enter the plane, I noticed the woman in the same queue that I was. Although she had fully covered herself, I could recognize her from the handbag she was carrying. As soon as she entered the aircraft the first thing she did was removing her burqa and I was a bit shocked to see this beautiful woman in skin-tight jeans and a top. From her face I could read her that she was feeling like a bird released from its cage. This made me to believe that women are forced to wear burqa which is imposed by male-dominated societies on their women folk so that they are not seen by other men.

The country where I currently live, some Muslim women, mostly Pakistanis wear scarf. It’s quite rare that any Indian women wear the scarf. Besides France, recently a Province in Canada too banned burqa and many Muslims supported it.

I have read Quran and many Islamic articles which don’t impose burqa on women but do advocate dresses that show modesty of women. Women in many Mid-East Countries opt for fashionable dresses, except in Saudi Arabia where even non-Muslim women are required to wear burqa. We are in the 21st century where there is no room for the old customs imposed by men thousands of years ago, which has no religious value and as such, it should be made obsolete.

There are several opinions of Islamic scholars of the highest eminence on the wearing of headscarves and body coverings like the burkha, which are based on the Qur’an, Hadiths and the Sunnah. But if these scholars cannot agree on how a Muslim man and woman should be dressed, then I do not see how an average Muslim will come into an agreement and have a uniform dress code.

The wearing of the “Hijab or Niqab” is in strictly accordance with “Sharia Law”. Hence here are my questions for those supporters of Sharia law, please answer them and don’t give me a lecture on America or Israel.
1.Is it acceptable for supporters of Sharia laws to ask non-Muslims and their organizations to accept and agree on their points of view (Sharia) when they clearly do not believe in Islam and reject Sharia law?
2.Why should non-Muslim accept and implement things they do no believe in, when there are a very large percentage of Muslims who do not follow Sharia Law?
3.If you want a non-Muslim to follow Sharia Law then would it be possible for non-Muslims to come to Muslim institutions and tell them what they should or should not do, and if they don’t comply then complain and force you to comply?

This controversy keeps coming up all the time and it is time to put it to rest. The best solution is for Muslim wanting to practice their faith and to enforce Sharia laws is they set up their own institutions and then enact Sharia compliant laws, but DO NOT go to non-Muslim organization and ask everyone to dance to your music.

Very complicated decision. If this decision was taken coz the Muslim girl had malpractised, then what if nun had done the same. Dont say nun woudnt do this. Will they ban such dress??. I have seen from my eyes that girls in college used to remove chits from their cleavage and right the exams and it was a ch.. girl.

Forget if any girl does of any religion. Let the management do frisking before leting any student to enter the class. Dont take decision coz of one girl. Fix cameras, have CID's etc etc. Why Princi wears similar kind of Burka, but in White colour. Let them also wear Jeans, tight fit t shirt.  Let nuns also wear salwar, pant t shirt..

RULES SHOULD BE FOR EVERYBODY, NOT ONLY FOR MUSLIMS.  ...THINK TWICE BEFORE TAKING THE DECISON...obviously u will lose the reputation of the college which u have built in 130 yrs

They need not wear Burkha if their regular dress is as per the Islamic dress code ie A loose garment covering and concealing the shape of the body and the hairline. There is nothing wrong done to hurt our sentiments. Well , they didnt ban loose dresses and headscarves or made skimpy dresses obligatory , did they ? We should not make an issue out of this now.

"The new rule comes in the wake of an incident where in a girl student was caught cheating during the last semester exams". It means banning Burqa you can stop copying in exam or only Muslim girls cladding Burqa are copying in exam. I don’t find any valuable reason to ban Burqa other than religious one. Earlier a lecture's appointment was revoked in this institution because she wearing hijab while they allow nuns to wear their sacred robes during class hour.

I have seen comparing gulf countries to some incidents like this in many cases. To be true, is there any capital punishment to the killer in India? And, what about the rapist or thief/burglar etc. It is uncomparable.

Do people don't drive or authorities don't allow to drive because there are accidents? Likewise, because of some culprits should all the fraternity suffer. It is not all sounding good.

burka is misused by Muslims. Committing suicide, cheating identity. Nuns are showing their face they do not hide.

If you need christian collages then obey collage rules. When christian girls go to saudi they make them to wear burka and we dont put objections.

For those who say Nuns should be wearing regular dress, you should understand there is a difference between teacher and student and dress uniform is applicable to student and not teachers. Nuns wear scarp and they don't cover their face while teaching students. St. Aloysius College management has allowed students to wear scarp. Nuns are following the dress code set by their religious institution and not by the religion itself. Same thing applies to all students when they are part of the educational institution and abide by the institution's rule which is required to maintain uniformity/discipline among students.

By wearing a Burka one doesn't know whether the person is a male or female unless he physically examines the person. Will that be permitted then ?

Even in St.Agnes College , muslim girls remove their Burkas when they enter the campus.

Muslims should keep their personal laws to themselves otherwise let the females join Badria College at Bunder. No harm in that.

Each institution has its own rules to maintain strict dicipline, whichever community one may belong to.We must follow it or shift to another college.Nobody will stop you.

" In Rome do what the Romans do and follow it " is the old saying.

People claim to ban burqha as it is a religious attire. If burqha is religious attire then the 'Habit' which the nuns wear is also religious attire.

If the college admin deems that malpractice happens only with students wearing a 'burqha/veil/abaya' I am sure you are wrong. Students do write and hide chits in shirts/pants. Will the college administration ask the students to come nude to avoid malpractice? or banning burqha means end of malpractice?

Ita not written in Kuran that woman should wear burka but it is written in Kuran that woman should cover her body appropriately.  All these rules are made by male dominant society.  Wearing burka is linked to Arabic culture and it has nothing to do with religion.

Very rightly said Mr. Bulsam, I have worked and travelled round the Gulf and probably other than Saudi Arabia, all women dress very fashionably to work and college. Just a minority prefer the Burkha not out of choice, but due to compulsion or for the "sake of Societal Propriety"

So Please do not make this an issue. Simply follow the rules of the College, if it odes not fit into your scheme of things you have the liberty to go to a college that permits you to wear the dress of your choice. Enough of havoc has been caused in our Country - Sate and district on account of Religious beliefs. Just be a good human being that is the best religion - Man made rules are debatable and result in bad blood.

There is disagreement in Islamic circles as to what extent Quran advocates the wearing of the burqa. However, The Quran does not specifically mention the burqa or tell women to wear such extremely confining clothes. Instead, it instructs men and women to dress and behave modestly in society (24:31), which ‘the Ulama’ means the Scholars do agree upon. Modern day Muslims base their authority regarding the burqa on ‘the hadith’ means collected traditions of life in the days of Prophet Muhammad.

It is important to note here that these ‘collected traditions’ have no place in Islam. Most followers of these traditions know little of their origins or authenticity. For the thousands of traditions attributed to the Prophet only one bears notable credibility:

“Do not write down anything I say except the Quran. Whoever has written something other than Quran let him destroy it.” (Hadith from Ahmed Ibn Hanbal, Vol. 1, page 171 also from Sahih Muslim- Book 42, No. 7147).

With contradiction and confused thrown up by the hadith and ‘scholars of Islam’ let us consider what the Quran, the word of God, says on the topic of a dress code.

For women: Cover your chest (24:31) Lengthen your garments (33:59) and for both sexes The BEST garment is righteousness and modest conduct (7:26). That’s all.

Inside the class room the Muslim girls should wear modestly fitting Salwar-Kameez with Dupatta as headscarf. And, the rules are meant for all religion.

I had been to London in the March and was surprised to see girl students studying in 2nd class wearing hijab (there were 5 students who wore long ones which is worn during prayers) and come from the school on a picnic to Madame Tussauds and where in a big group along with students of different nationalities and looked after by British teachers moving around freely and none of them where bothered about this. Why this happens in India is surprising.

No muslims should make a fuss or issue about it. Its reasoned move and holds good in the present circumstances. Muslim students can wear burkha from home to the campus and when they enter class rooms they need to take it off. There is no harm in it....

Islam dictates that when going out, muslim women should wear burkha or cover their body...When in the classroom, its like they are in their home...Headscarves or duppattas are allowed...I dont find any thing wrong here and rather I fully support the college management...

No religious code is violated and no disrespect for any religion. Headscarf is more than enough when they are in classroom and whey they walk out of the class room, put on their burkha and go home..Absoultely fine and all educational insituttions should follow the suit...No burkah in class room, headscarfs allowed...

The main purpose of wearing burkah is to protect the mdoesty of muslim women. Muslim students have more responsibility than college management in protecting their own modesty....At times misuse of burkah leads to lots of problems.... Modesty should be taught at home and not at college or schools.

Just burkah only doesnt bring modesty into ones life...modesty is a culmination of good islamic teachings, good family back ground and good family roots...So dont blame the college lets blame ourselves....
