Mangalore, May 27: A team of 35 officials led by joint commissioner Shrikant Rao, along with revenue and health inspectors and police teams raided street venders, fruits and vegetable sellers and those who were allegedly trading illegally in the surrounding areas of Market Road here on Sunday, May 27.

Shrikant Rao speaking to Daijiworld said that under section 58 and sub-section 20 of the Karnataka Corporation Act, (removal of obstructions and projections in or upon streets, bridges and other public places), the officials seized fruits and vegetables that were being sold on the road.

"The raid is purely on the basis of receiving constant complaints from the general public that the traffic is completely blocked as sellers trade on the road on Sundays. The owners who are actually set up in the allotted market areas, come out on to the road and trade, taking up half the road," Joint commissioner informed.

"We have seized nearly three quintals of fruits and vegetables. Our primary objective was to make way for traffic," he added.

"We have not only stuck to the city area, but have also focussed on Suratkal. Only those who do not have a proper record and licence to carry out business will be targeted. In the raid, we have learnt that there are traders who have allegedly run business for nearly 4 to 5 years without licence," Rao said.

"Our intension is not to target the poor traders, we have also raided Bharath Mall, Saibeen Complex and City Centre. We want to ensure the need for proper records and licence while running a business," he explained.

Vijay Kumar, assistant revenue inspector, 14 revenue inspectors, 10 health inspectors and other police personnel were part of the raid.

    This act is totally merciless.
There should have been warning prior to taking such step which makes sense.
What about Bejai Market which is forcefully established on the compound wall of church school ground where even poultry / meat..etc is being traded / poorly maintained. What is the status of MCC market…when construction will complete.
Now a days as Mr. fernandes said, lot of rowdiesm act is being encouraged by govt officials in Mangalore, a kind of autocracy.
This is very dangerous and need a full stop.

Has anyone seen the plight of Bejai market, 6 years & running, still under construction, the vendors are peddling their wares outside LCS, Bejai. That is un-hygenic, no drains, school children have to pass through that stench, etc. Who is responsible for this mess, MCC. Take a look at Kadri market with its rain leakages, poor drainage, bus stop right in front of it, who is responsible for this, MCC of course. There is a restaurant next to Ganesh Bazaar, that uses the parking & side walk for extra chairs, who allows them, MCC of course. Give us action on these in 1 month's time and then we will believe that your actions are sincere.

Its a good clean up start, however how long is this going to last? Knowing Mangalore and the Public, things will quite down soon and life will return to normal, one day we will see someone in market road selling something walking along, next a table comes up then soon a umbrella and even before we realize they are selling stuff allover again. However does anyone know where the seized items go.. are they distributed to some charity or just dumped in garbage or delivered to some official homes ? Sure Daiji will have a lot of stock to compare the past, the present and the future..Please follow up.. Lets all hope its for the betterment of the city.

Hello joint Commissioner, the "constant complaint" part sounds funny and hypocritical. Poor vendors are there 365 days, and you have come to clear the road only for a day quoting sections of law and made news. If the Police and the city administration were to follow the rules in letter and spirit, what a lovely this Nation would have been.

This time MCC brought a big truck to load the perishables, atleast better than previous incident- thrown pani puri on road. I suggest,MCC train their officals in Mumbai Maha Nagara Palika and use their expertise. They inform the vendors first and raid thereater. There is already a vegetable market and there is no solution. It is with mcc to tackle the problem permanently or live with it.

I will appreciate this act of MCC if they maintain continuity to ensure abiding of law and cleanliness in Mangalore city. However, we ourselves have to blame for the above scenario as the vendors do not take the warnings of MCC officials seriously and continue to break the law when the issue cools down. However, the pictures portray a different story and we feel sorry for the poor vendors. MCC had to follow other options when the vendors do not abide by the law.

Recover bouble money/ghoose paid by the vendors/shop owners/paan puri peoples from the fake or verbal licence allowed/givers and from police. Mcc is raiding every shops and street vendors. But they're not bothered to raid a shop which is near Canara Bank @ chilimbi 3rd cross, just because the owner of that shop is a close friend / neighbor of the corporator. On this cross road people are walking on the road and not on the foot path because there is shop right near the entrance of the road and the foot path. Earlier the lady used to sit only with one table and a chair but now she has got a concrete floor and 2 tables with another shop adjacent to the road side on rent. But no one dares to raid this shop. Corporator is dumb in this case. Why?

This is called looting the poor traders. Agreed, street vendors business is illegal. But, where was MCC all these years ? Why can't they give grace period for these street vendors to vacate the place instead of stealing their belongings ? MCC officials know now these people will approach them to obtain permission to restart business and MCC officials can suck their pockets as they want. I am sure within no time this business will resume and then there will be no raid again.

WHY THIS KOLAVERI ALL OF SUDDEN ? SINCE 65 YEARS WHERE WERE THESE OFFICIALS WHILE GENERAL PUBLIC WAS CHEATED BY THESE VENDORS ( NOT OBTAINING THE TRADE LICENSE) ! ! HOW ABOUT DUPLICATE GOODS SOLD ON ORIGINAL PRICES BY THEM ? HOW ABOUT HYGIENE STANDARDS OF THE RESTAURANTS ?
HOW ABOUT ORIGIN AND QUALITY OF PRODUCTS ?
HOW ABOUT THE PRICES AND WHO WILL DECIDE - VENDOR OR GOVT ?
HOW ABOUT FISH PRICES IN THE MARKET ? WHO HAS TO DECIDE ?
HOW ABOUT PRIVATE BUS STOP - THE FACILITIES WHICH ARE SUB-STANDARDS ?
HOW ABOUT FISH MARKET CLEANLINESS ? WHO WILL TAKE CARE ABOUT THAT ?
HOW ABOUT GENERAL MARKET CLEANLINESS ? WHO WILL TAKE CARE ABOUT THAT ?
HOW ABOUT THE FRESH MEAT DISPLAY STANDARDS ? WHO IS TAKING CARE ABOUT THAT ?

MCC PEOPLE SHOULD ANSWER THE QUESTIONS BEFORE RIDING ON COMMON POOR PEOPLE !!!!!

MCC SHOULD MAKE A RULE THAT - CLEANLINESS IN FRONT OF ANY SHOP OR RESTAURANT OR FISH MARKET - VEGETABLE MARKET - OWNERS SHOULD TAKE RESPONSIBILITY OTHERWISE IMPOSE HEAVY FINE ON THEM !!! ( SAME LIKE AS NO PARKING FINE)

So what is the proposed remedial action:
MCC should develop a strategy for planned Fruits and vegetable markets at various locations within the corporation limits. Even though such are available they need to be revamped as per standards. This will avoid traffic chaos in the city. Fruits and vegetable vendors trying to encroach the road will be minimized. The drive performed by MCC to maintain public road should be implemented in future also during market days. Why not such a drive in UDUPI especially the existing fish market area or relocation of the existing fish market.

Most people are ignorant of various public norms and requirement of various licence. Even though ignorant of law is not an excuse as per legal terms, considering education of the people MCC has to start public awareness campaign before the raid. It can be similar to what has done for ration cards, gas cylinders. Publish the norms and warnings in the newspapers and also posters in prominent areas. Public departments always cannot follow what is right. Better to do what is fair. I am afraid that present situation may create fear and public anger resulting unemployment and most importantly CRIME.

First make way for the fruit and vegetable vendors to pitch on the street, allow them to operate for about 5-6 month, then raid the place in the name of clearing the road for traffic and whatever comes in the raid is for the so called Health Inspectors.

I have a question for the MCC, what is the qualification required to become an "Health Inspectors". What do these inspectors know about health. How qualified are these so called health inspectors.
Least of all, do they know anything about science and biology.
