Mangalore, May 27: A team of 35 officials led by joint commissioner Shrikant Rao, along with revenue and health inspectors and police teams raided street venders, fruits and vegetable sellers and those who were allegedly trading illegally in the surrounding areas of Market Road here on Sunday, May 27.
Shrikant Rao speaking to Daijiworld said that under section 58 and sub-section 20 of the Karnataka Corporation Act, (removal of obstructions and projections in or upon streets, bridges and other public places), the officials seized fruits and vegetables that were being sold on the road.
"The raid is purely on the basis of receiving constant complaints from the general public that the traffic is completely blocked as sellers trade on the road on Sundays. The owners who are actually set up in the allotted market areas, come out on to the road and trade, taking up half the road," Joint commissioner informed.
"We have seized nearly three quintals of fruits and vegetables. Our primary objective was to make way for traffic," he added.
"We have not only stuck to the city area, but have also focussed on Suratkal. Only those who do not have a proper record and licence to carry out business will be targeted. In the raid, we have learnt that there are traders who have allegedly run business for nearly 4 to 5 years without licence," Rao said.
"Our intension is not to target the poor traders, we have also raided Bharath Mall, Saibeen Complex and City Centre. We want to ensure the need for proper records and licence while running a business," he explained.
Vijay Kumar, assistant revenue inspector, 14 revenue inspectors, 10 health inspectors and other police personnel were part of the raid.
