Mangalore was very green before the year 2001. But now the green color is fading and turning black. All the trees are cut down for construction and there are no more trees surrounding the buildings. The Gateway to Greener World is closed forever.

"Gateway to Greener World" is a new vocabulary we have learned today in addition to the words and phrases such as "Dehamata", "Bhumata", "Gomata", "Vedamata" and "Deshamata". All of these words and phrases bring a new awareness of the environmental concerns that each and every Indian should reflect upon this day while we commemorate the precious Environment that we embrace so dearly for our daily survival.

While India's population is growing more than 15 million each year, and while we enjoy the steady growth in economy and obvious affluence, our streets will be flooded with more and more people and with all kinds of vehicles in our narrow streets.

Auto emission is the biggest concern of all that will impact our environment with uncontrollable pollution.
Economic growth will also give rise to more industrialization added with Refineries, Petrochemicals, Power generation plans and much more. All of the above will bring natural hazards to health and well being of every citizen. We cannot fathom the long term impacts on future generation that deserves better health and hygiene.

We therefore appreciate and encourage every precautionery measure undertaken by our city officials with the help of the public so that each and everyone of us remain satisfied with the fact that each and everyone of us have contributed enough for the greener world with cleaner air to breathe, cleaner water to drink, cleaner food to eat and a cleaner environment to live and let live. Qudha Afeiz and Dhanyawaadh.
