Mangalore, Jul 11: Mangalore Bar Association members will refrain from two days of court proceedings to support the call given by Bar Council of India against the draft of Higher Education and Research Bill 2011, said SP Changappa, Mangalore Bar Association president at a press meet on Tuesday July 10.

The Bar Association members will be organizing a two-day protest on July 11 and 12. As part of the protest, a procession will be carried out from the court premises to the deputy commissioner’s office and a memorandum will be submitted on Wednesday at 11 am.

Addressing the press meet, Changappa said, “The Bar Council of India and State Bar Council will be left out without any powers as the Higher Education and Research Bill proposes the setting up of a national commission.”

The Bar Association opposes national accreditation regulatory authority for Higher Educational Institution Act 2010, Foreign Educational Institutions (Regulation of Entry and Operations) Bill 2010, Prohibition of Unfair Practices in Higher Educational Institution Bill 2010, National Law Schools Bill 2011 and Motor Vehicle Act 2012.

Changappa said that it is a threat to the Advocates Act of 1961, under which around 3000 lawyers of Dakshina Kannada are governed by it.

Ganesh Shenoy, general secretary, B Vittal Rai, treasurer among others were present at the press meet.
