Two Senior Zee Journalists Arrested on Extortion Charges

New Delhi, Nov 27 (PTI): Two senior journalists of Zee news channel were arrested here today on charges of trying to extort Rs 100 crore from Congress MP Naveen Jindal's group for not doing news reports on coal scam linking his firm.

The arrests on charges of extortion came following the registration of a case about 45 days ago on a complaint filed by Jindal's company with Delhi Police's Crime Branch.

Sudhir Chaudhary

Sudhir Chaudhary, the head of Zee News, and Samir Ahluwalia, head of Zee Business, have been arrested, a senior police official said.

Jindal had last month released a CD in which purportedly showed footage in which the Zee journalists were trying to strike a deal with his company officials, telling them that their channel will not air negative stories of Jindal Group if the money is paid to them.

Chaudhary had rubbished the allegations as "fabrication" and described it as "pressure tactics" to prevent the channel from doing such stories.

"We have done a series of stories on coal scam based on official papers. This is a retaliation to our relentless campaign against corruption," he had said.

Jindal Power and Steel Ltd (JPSL) Chairman Naveen Jindal had earlier claimed that the Zee executives had demanded Rs 20 crore for four years and they secretly filmed the meetings.

They later raised the demand to Rs 100 crore for not broadcasting stories against the company in relation to allocation of coal blocks, he claimed.

JSPL is among the companies named in the CAG report as one of the beneficiaries of the controversial coal block allocations.

In a retaliatory move, Zee News had last month sent a Rs 150 crore defamation notice to the Congress MP, who too had filed a Rs 200 crore case against the media conglomerate claiming the TV channel had tried to extort money from his company.

DEAR ALL....Read below news of 11 Sept 2012.
Industrialist and Congress MP Naveen Jindal on 11/09/2012 manhandled ZEE news channel team after it asked some uncomfortable questions on the coal block allocation issue. Following the incident, Jindal remained unavailable for comment even as the Congress apologized on behalf of the party.

The incident took place when a team of journalists from Zee News caught up with the owner of Jindal Steel and Power Ltd (JSPL) at a function in Le Meridien hotel. The channel claimed that its reporter sought clarifications from Jindal on the allegations levelled against his company in the coal block scam.
However, Jindal got upset at the questioning and first asked the reporter about his professional antecedents. When the reporter identified himself, the Congress MP first refused to talk to the channel, saying, "Zee News has been showing all rubbish on its channel." On being told that some other channels had also taken up the issue, he lost his cool. The channel claimed an angry Jindal pushed the camera person and asked threateningly, "What is this, why are you coming to this programme... what are you doing?" Jindal is facing heat after it came to light that JPL, a subsidiary of JSPL, was the first Indian power company to operate on a "merchant power" basis, which allowed it to sell electricity at a market rate that was higher than the rate at which power regulators fixed tariff for companies selling power to states through long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs).

All other Channels will publish now “Breaking News” but Zee News will have to air “Broken News”. I think all Media forums that strongly condemn Navin Surinje’s arrest recently will go back to Zee News Office to criticize the Media Ethics or will they come out on road to condemn UPA Government’s Policy under “Freedom of Press”? But any how they learned a lesson that, they can’t touch any UPA Party Leaders for sure

Either of them could be guilty here.
Politicians are anyway known to be very corrupt and the media is just as bad!
There is absolutely NO call for us to blame professions herebe it journalism or the police force it's usually the greed of money or the need for publicity that drives people to this!!
Some of the BEST human beings have also been journalists and the police. It's not fair to blame professions because if the same people were in other professions they would still be money-minded I'm sure!!!

Naveen Jindal & the entire congress is accused of corruption... why aren't they behind the bars???... this is typical misuse of power... if the journalists tried to extort money from you (as you allege), the fact remains that you were offering them a price to not cover the coalgate, esply your involvement in it... you are involved in coalgate & hence a story on you, which you wanted to be ped & for which you're willing to pay any price... you are a minister accused of corruption & now even bribery... why aren't you behind the bars???...

Since the authenticity of the tape of sting operation confirmed, hence,ZEE TV is in defensive. Sudhir Chowdry,Head of the Zee NEWS initially worked with U.P based SAHARA TV for quite some time and later joined reputed media house ZEE.We don't know ZEE management involved in this ugly episode and court will decide the issue.Anyhow, this sting operation indeed dented ZEE's reputation and for that ZEE TV may pay heavy price.
