Mangalore: SAC 'Media Manthan' celebrates 100 years of Indian cinema

Mangalore, Jan 21: ‘Media Manthan 2013’, a two-day national-level media fest based on the theme ‘Celebrating 100 Years of Indian Cinema’ was inaugurated at Eric Mathias Hall, St Aloysius College (Autonomous) here on Monday January 21.

Rohini K, officer, department of information was the chief guest. She inaugurated the fest by lighting lamp along with other dignitaries on the dais.

Fr Swebert D’Silva, principal presided over the function while Sandeep Malani, Bollywood film director, and Vijaykumar Kodialbail, writer and director were guests of honor.

Rohini in her keynote address lauded the students for their creativity in organizing the fest on the theme ‘Celebrating 100 Years of Indian Cinema’ and advised them to take part in all the activities and events organized in the college, which in turn would enrich their talents. "You may not get an opportunity once you leave the college, so make the best of every opportunity you get here," she said.

"Cinema is a reflection of the society. Indian Cinema over a 100 years has grown to great heights. As a tribute to the 100 years of Indian Cinema, the government has decided to hold a tableau based on  the theme during the Republic Day parade," she added.

On the occasion, the dignitaries honored Sandeep Malani and Vijaykumar Kodialbail for their contribution to cinema.

Acknowledging the honour, Malani thanked the organizers of the fest and appreciated their creativity. "As an honour to Indian Cinema on completing 100 years on April 21, I am making a movie called ‘Malani 100’ and the shooting is on in Mumbai," he added.

"I have not grown to the extent that I can comment on Indian Cinema as a whole, but to a certain extent I have knowledge of Tulu movie Industry," said Vijaykumar Kodialbail.

Commenting on Tulu movie, he said the first Tulu movie was ‘Yenna Thangadi’ which was produced in 1970. "The Tulu movie industry has completed 42 years now and the total Tulu movie produced so far is 44," he said.

"Tuluvas are ahead in all things, from Miss World to Underworld, but let us be ahead in all good things," he added, and asked students to love their regional language too so that they can contribute to its growth.

In his presidential address, Fr Swebert D’Silva lauded the department of Mass Communication for their organizing capabilities. "Let us purify media and make them fight for justice," he said adding, "These days media act as creators of news."

Commenting on cinema, he said these days in movies reality is not presented, instead, illusions are depicted. "Our films should depict real life of the people but the sad part is value-based cinema is rejected by the audience," he added.

Various competitions like 8x10 Tasveer (Photography Contest), Bol Bachchan (RJ Hunt), Taare Zameen Par (Quiz), Pehchaan Kaun (Mock Press), Kahaani (Trailer Making), Golmaal (Movie Spoof), Viraam (Ad Making), Makhdi Ki Jaal (Web Designing), Peepli Live (Video Bulletin) and Chitragupt (Film Review) will be held during the course of the event.

There will also be workshops on acting and anchoring, film direction and techniques, web designing; panel discussion on cultural diversity in Indian Cinema and interactive talk on 'commerce of the scientific art'.

Laxmi Shenoy welcomed the gathering while Sudeep Shenoy delivered the vote of thanks.

Fr Francis Almeida, vice-principal, Narahari, registrar, Bhavya Shetty, Vishal Nayak, Kiran Shenoy among others were present.

    Mr. Bhandarkar, the 'clickathon' you are referring to was a photo clicked during the photography workshop, wherein participants were being taught how to operate the camera in Manual Mode. Also, the ma'am below M was on a call, you can notice it if you look carefully.

    All in all, Media Manthan 2013 was a grand success, and we wish to thank all those who were a part of it :)

    Looking at some photographs at the fag end-What are they clicking?Looks like a 'Clickathon' or 'Click Manthan'...
    Madam in last picture (on M) looks excited!Wonder whether it was Sharukh at the receiving end!!
