Ultra mega power plant to come up in Niddodi?

Bangalore, Feb 24 (DHNS): The village of Niddodi in Dakshina Kannada district is being suggested by the state government as an ideal site for setting up an ultra mega power plant (UMPP).

In a letter to Union Minister of State for Power Jyothiraditya Scindia, Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar said a team of officials from Power Corporation of Karnataka Limited and Karnataka Udyog Mitra and Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB) have carried out a site inspection in and around the coastal areas of Karnataka and had identified Niddodi village, located close to Mangalore, as a suitable location. He urged the Centre to take further steps.

According to officials in the Energy Department, the project will be executed by the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC). It will have to be inspected by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) and approved.

Niddodi is located about one and a half hours from the port of Mangalore, which is expected to make the transport of coal easy for the 4,000 MW plant. Since a power line already runs from Udupi to this place, even transmission of power is not expected to pose a problem, unlike Tadadi where power supply had to be carried out through dense forests, according to officials.

As of now, officials are tightlipped about whether locals have been taken into confidence about this project. “We are still at a very initial stage. We had to suggest a site to the Centre or we might have lost the project and Government of India would have pursued the same with some other state. We, however, do anticipate problems from locals,” the official said.

Earlier, the CEA had shot down the four sites proposed at Shiroor, Honnavar, Divgi and Kanchanbal as suggested by a team of officials from the state and the Centre. The CEA had declared all the four sites unsuitable for setting up an UMPP based on remote sensing technique, which uses satellite data along with geological, topographical, transport, forest cover and other data to identify a suitable site.

Water for the project will come from the sea. It will be desalinated. The Nandini River cannot supply that much water. The same is with the Nagarjuna Power project. But the hot water will belch into the Nandini river unless other plans are made. Luke warm water ( after mixing with the normal river water ) is good for marine life it seems esp. for fish like Kane, cockels etc.

Niddodi is 999 grade gold.It is pure green heaven on the earth.Pure people, pure greenaries around made this place people to feel heavenly abode.Government should not spoil this beautiful place in the name of power project. Moreover there are a number of temples, nagabanas in th vacinity which is worshipped by locals.Famous Kateel sree Durga Parameshwari Temple is 2-3- kms away from Niddodi and suroundings will definitely get polluted beyond ones imagination .Again the only river in the southern side of Niddodi is "Nandini river" wherein Sreee Duraga Parameshwari temple is situated.Just imagine the gravity of pollution of this river if this coal based plant starts commissioning.
Since the news of power project is out now many vested interest will plung into action to chalk out plans of protests not to stall the project, nor in the interest of peoples welfare but purely for their personal gains as was done in massive scale in respect of NTPCL now UPCL near Padubidri which is also a Thremal based power plant. All most all leaders from all political parties starting from Panchayat level to LS are real benificiaries of "suit case culture"
So people should be more careful and vigilent when politicians are sneaking in to the scene in the name of 'concern for the people'The active role in a dubious way by "parisara premi Samithi"cant be ruled out when the protest takes momentum.

Due to the lack of coal supply and non-payments by the KPTCL the UPCL was temporarily shut down. Instead of restarting the UPCL now govt is trying to grab land. The only benefit goes to land mafias not the locals. This is the only intention of this project.

Dear Niddodians, come what may, please don't allow this project to take off. This is the question of your existence. Fight back and we all are with you.

For those who support this project: I had visited the Sisters' Convent at Niddodi which is located amidst the pristine greenery beside the main road. I saw in my own eyes various types of birds, mainly peacocks just wandering in the back yard. It is a unique scene where nuns and birds and other animals live together. This is a very lovely place. As somebody written here, all this is going to be lost, aquatic treasure will be destroyed, locals health will be compromised, etc etc.

By the way, please don't raise the bogey of getting the jobs. It is a dream. You may probably get a watchman's job. May be rank holders have a chance of getting job. For that also, you have to fight with all your might. We don't want this kind of projects in our region. We will live in darkness, but at least have fresh air and water for consumption.

By the way, anybody can guarantee that:-
Permanent executive jobs for the land losers?

Free 24 hour electricity for DK/Udupi?

Strict follow of international safety standards?

Fair negotiation with the land losers and payment of compensation 10 times the market rate?

    No landmafia in the deals?

    Land losers becoming the shareholders?

This is all non-sense. Niddodians please don't get fooled. Fresh air is better than a sloppy job or a couple of lakhs. Please take a look at the other projects. You will sacrifice and live in darkness and Bangalore(and the politicians there) will enjoy.

People want power but reluctant to give up land and many are against destroying the "beautiful scenery"!!
Then ready to blame government for not supplying electricity power.

People of DK have to decide fast - as it is it takes such a long time to bring up the project and when there is objection all around - it will delay much much more.

In the past they took our farmers & environmentalists to Maharashtra, now just take them to UPCL plant area, then they will see what green technology on paper & assurances were broken by this plant after lining the pockets of our chosen politicians.
Just ask the government to implement LNG or CNG based power plant or else let them run for cover.
If solar panels were installed in the area designated for dumping fly-ash we can beat Modhi's Gujarath in Green Electricity.
Take a study tour of Gujarath & decide what Modhi Magic can do to Karnataka.

How many IT cos. have accumulated large tracts of land in prominent places in various places all over India at peanut rates in the name of IT park, SEZ, etc.

Utmost importance should be given to environment pollution as we now know what are the long term effects of various pollutants!! A glaring example of Nandikoor in front of us to see how the locals are suffering there!!!

There are so many places other than the scenic and fertile/pristine surroundings of Mangalore to set up a coal based power plant, which if set will bring untold permanent misery by way of all round pollution to the inhabitants of once pollution free Mangluru!! Now, the longstanding residents of Nidodi since generations will feel the heat of having to leave their places due to land acquisition and relocate!!

Wake up people!! Your land will be grabbed at cheap price and will be sold to industrial houses at hefty price like they did for MRPL and PetroComplex. This happened in SEZ projects as well and look at Ganjimut Export Promotion Park today. Most of the companies are doing business locally in the name of export promotion park. The govt. officials are making a killing through bribes which are being paid by the industrialists.
