Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (VM)

Udupi, Feb 27: In a tragic incident, a boy died after eating an omelette in which rat poison was used accidentally instead of pepper powder.

The deceased boy is identified as Prajnesh Shetty (13), son of Sathish and Latha Kumari Shetty from Parkala Herge. The family basically hails form Teerthahalli. Latha works in a hospital.

It is said that Prajnesh prepared the omlette on his own when his mother was away at work. He mistook rat poison for pepper powder and added it to the omlette, sources said.

The boy who ate the poisoned omelette was fine for sometime. The incident came to light only after he turned sick later.

He was admitted to Manipal hospital on February 21. However, after battling for life for about five days, he passed away on Tuesday February 26.

A case has been registered in the Manipal police station.

The survival of patients with rat poisoning depends on type of rat poison and time taken to start treatment.Early treatment with activated charcoal and supportive treatment will be helpful.

Tragic incident ... reminds me of a very funny incident many years ago when my cousin brother's son mistook kerosene as water and drank the entire contents. Fortunately, he was saved and the colour of kerosene has now changed to blue.

13 yrs old boy could not distinguish what is rat poison and pepper. Big question mark?

After eating omlet with rat poison, the admitted to hospital and suffered for 5 days. Is the hospital could not treat the boy properly? This shows, the hospital is not fully equipped to the HOSPITAL standard and they could not give right medicare to the boy.

Might be there was a error by the doctor too, while treating this boy. NOT disputing, the boy ate omlet with rat poison.

May his soul rest in peace.

This can happen to anyone.. This is a good lesson for the readers to take care rather blaming the parent or the child. It's unfortunate and only God Almighty can console this family undergoing this big loss..

This is a utter stupidity from the mother. If she works in a hospital she should be good enough to keep the poison far away from the spices. In this case she is solely responsible for this blunder.

Actually all such poison's should come in containers which should be Child proof again it is the Authorities who approved such packaging for poisons substance should be held responsible unless the poison was lying loose, then clearly the parents are at fault but then are the parents knowledgeable enough to know the consequence, anyway let the police and judge worry about this, but rest of us learn from such incidents.

We can't blame children for everything. What hospital is the mother working in Veterinary ? She could not even arrange separate storage for poison from spices ?

Please keep medicines, poison, cleaning products away from children. Better if it’s safely locked. Accidental poisoning can have a devastating effect.

Height of parental irresponsibility and ignorance. Teach the children the cooking ingredients by name and smell first plus fire safety. Bragging in public, "my son can cook an omelet" is no parental achievement. Yet another teenager lost his right to live on this earth.
