Mangalore: Mandd Sobhann presents meaningful play 'Mr Jesus'

Mangalore, Mar 4: The Kalakul repertory of Mandd Sobhann presented the Konkani play 'Mr Jesus' amidst a houseful audience at Kalaangann on Sunday March 3. The play was presented as part of the 135th monthly theatre.
'Mr Jesus', written and directed by Arun Raj Rodrigues and co-directed by Christopher D'Souza Neenasam, depicted the state of affairs of the modern world and how Jesus Christ would feel and be treated were he to return on earth.
The play, which was received with much appreciation for its imagination and manner of presentation, conveyed a meaningful message especially in the light of the Lenten season. The generous dose of humour in the script perfectly complemented the seriousness of the plot.
Jesus, on his return to earth, is welcomed by the clergy, but to his disappointment, he is introduced to the rich instead of the poor. The religious people even make him wear modern clothes and want him to live a posh life, whereas Jesus wants to serve the poor and goes in search of them. He even questions the offering boxes kept in churches, asserting that he does not want money.
The need to foster religious harmony too is stressed through the play, where Jesus meets priests from Muslim and Hindu communities and exchanges greetings with them. The message that comes forth is that humanity is the supreme religion.
The play also took a dig at the media which sensationalizes his return to earth, and also depicted how his teachings are manipulated by people for their own ends. The play also indirectly dwelt on the need to preserve Konkani language.
The audience who sat spellbound throughout the play applauded the efforts of the troupe.
Arun Raj Rodgrigues was felicitated by Mandd Sobhann president Stany Alvares at the end of the play.
