Mangalore, Mar 5: The students of St Ann's Institution on Tuesday March 5 strongly condemned the murder and alleged rape of 22-year-old Soumya that was reported last week.

The students held a rally showing their solidarity with the victim's family and demanded justice in the case. Students from other colleges and schools too joined them.

The rally also aimed at spreading awareness on safety issues on women.

The rally which was flagged off from St Ann’s College premises passed throught State Bank and wound back to the college.

On the occasion, Asha Nayak, CWD chairperson spoke on the atrocities faced by women. Lauding the initiative of the College, she said, "Organizing a procession or rally like this is not enough. Our work should not be restricted to protests alone. More importantly, when women are attacked, they should have the courage to file a case and demand justice. Awareness should be created on this."

"Women should be well aware of their rights and should have knowledge on how to fight legally when problems come their way," she added.

Around 2000 students from colleges and schools namely St Agnes, St Mary’s Margil and Mount Carmel participated in the rally.

Soumya was a former student of St Ann's College where she completed her DEd course.

Sr Linette AC, provincial superior, Sr Lydia Fernandes, joint secretary, Sr Edna Furtado, secretary of Apostolic Carmel education society among others were present.

Congrats to the Sisters of the Apostolic Carmel and St Ann's Instituions for organising a peace rally to protest against the brutal rape and murder of Sowmya. Advocate Asha Nayak's exhortation to the students as "She urged the students to be alert and not to give any opportunity for such incidents in their life." will surely act as a warning to the young minds. I also hope that the rally will be an eye-opener to the whole of society, both men and women, so that all of us may be conscientised to work whole-heartedly towards preventing further atrocities.

Yet another horror story.....in Mangalore this time. This has to stop. I am proud of the young generation coming together to fight these crimes. But in Mangalore I see only girls and women fighting the battle. Young men should also come out in support. Rape is a horrible crime and is worse than murder. We have to fight this as a society.

Agree 100% Cyril & Romans. Government is too slow to take action. They arrest the culprits but due to the extremely long process in our legal system eventually everything would be and forgotten & perhaps even the culprits are set free.

I think it could have been better SIT IN DHARNA in front of DC and SP of DK rather than taking procession.Women folks need to be cautious in coming days not in our state but in entire India.Govt of India or politicians are not in favor of Capital Punishment against Atrocities against women(Rape/murder etc)such kind of atrocities will continue unabated. Two rape and murder incidents in DK totally erased trust Govt and law enforcing agencies. Therefore, women fraternity needed to be educated of self protection rather than defended on other security agencies.

Justice delayed is justice denied. Look at the apathy of our legal system, cases will linger on for years and everyone including the victims family is tired answering the repeated queries, time & money spent. Why not fast track courts for instant justice?
