Kasargod, Mar 5: Students of a school here had providential escape when their school bus plunged on to the railway track just minutes before they could board it.

The incident outside Dhakheerath English Medium Higher Secondary School at Thalangara here on Tuesday March 5.

It is said that the driver of the bus had parked the vehicle outside the school compound and gone inside to bring the children.

While he was away, the parked bus moved backwards as the handbrake was not in position, and rolled down the slope, plunging about 50 ft on to the railway track below.

Luckily, as neither the students nor the driver had boarded the bus, it was empty and no was hurt.

However, the accident caused some disruption in movement of trains for about half-an-hour.

Fire personnel and town police arrived at the spot and cleared the way. The children were sent by another school bus.

Besides driver's negligence, another worrying thing is that the bus was parked outside the compound near rail track slope? Luckily no one was there around the bus either. I think school should make necessary arrangements for parking the bus safely.

A barrier or a kind of wall blocks in this vicinity is required to prevent a kind of unwanted accidents.School management should consider this matter bit seriously that school buses are parked in a safe and proper ways.

Providence indeed. The children had collective fortune. Unimaginable if the kids were inside and a train sped by!! May the entire school be blessed. I am sure, the driver will now be pushing the gear handle and pulling the handbrake even while asleep.

Every type of work had its own dignity. But certain jobs require specific skills and techniques that other jobs may not demand. The issue here is not of brain and intelligence, but the lack of basic technical skills of the driver!

Even a learner won't park the bus in a position you described. The driver it fit to work on farmland and unfit to drive.

Sorry, but what makes you think that working in farmland do not require brain and intelligence?

Mr. D'Souza, Sorry, I did not mean working on farmland does not need intelligence. Every type of work has its own worth, dignity and risk. But certain jobs require specific skills and techniques that other jobs may not demand. The issue here is not of brain and intelligence, but the lack of basic technical skills of the driver! Are you not aware that in Mangalore, as elsewhere in the country, there are people who buy licenses without being least trained?

It is a fit case to retrieve DL of the driver by RTO. How could he obtain DL even he did not follow primary requisite of Driving and here in this case A SCHOOL MINI BUS which needs careful and salient features to become school bus driver.I think it is close shave and a wake up call for school authority and RTO alike.
