Mangalore, Mar 6: Like-minded organizations on Wednesday March 6 came together with Forum Against Atrocities on Women (Mahila Dourjanya Virodi Vedike) to seek peace against violence. The movement has been initiated in observance of International Women's Day on March 8.

The specialty of the silent protest was that women from various organizations from across the state stood all along the Hampankatta area dressed in black. Men also joined them.

The protestors conveyed their message demanding stop on violence against women and justice for victims through placards. They lit candles too and began as well as ended their two-hour protest with songs.

Addressing the protest, Madhu Bhushan from Bangalore said that the idea of protest by women in black originated in Israel about 20-30 years ago. "Women from Israel and Palestine regions came dressed in black and held a silent protest near the borders of the two countries. They held a peaceful march against war and conflict in those days," she said.

"In India, this form of protest was first seen in 1992 in Bangalore during the time of Babri Madjid demolition. Women dress in black had marched in silence for communal peace," she added.

Another protestor, Shanta, said that this protest in Mangalore was against the atrocities on women. "It is a peaceful protest wherein women in black and men will stand together and place their demands silently through placards," she said.

Their demands included:

- Establishment of fast-track courts.
- Delivery of justice within a time frame.
- Establishment of a government department to deal with sexual harassment cases.
- Care and rehabilitation of sexual harassment and rape victims to be undertaken by the government.
- Fixing responsibility for delay in investigation and action.
- Setting up of sexual harassment prevention committees in all sectors, including unorganized and informal sector where the majority of women work.
- Inclusion of texts emphasizing equality in schools and colleges.

As part of the movement, on March 7, there will be a seminar on 'Violence Against Women' at the department of women’s studies, Mangalore University at 10 am, wherein the keynote address will be delivered by well-known Dalit activist and writer Urmila Pawar from Maharashtra.

On March 8, a massive rally opposing all kinds of atrocities on women will be taken from from Bunt’s Hostel Circle to Karavali Festival ground behind Mangala Stadium at 10 am, followed by a public meeting in Karavali Festival ground at 11.30 am. Bhanwari Devi from Rajasthan who is the main force behind the Vishakha Guidelines against sexual harassment at the workplace will address the gathering.

Roshan Braganza-Mumbai and Steve-Dubai need to newspapers daily .. that carry headlines of not only women, but also girls of very tender age raped and majority of them murdered. It is true that there are quite some issues that need to be addressed .. but, these crimes against females has skyrocketed and the women in black have taken this chance to make people realize the dangers our womenfolk are facing in their daily lives. There might be quite some who go by your mindset, but for general public that care for their womenfolk, this is an eye-opener. The agenda of this march is to ask for protection and an atmosphere of safe living in this society for girls. I am sure you have females in your families too and they might also get some benefit from this forum.

Now common people are taking part in real life far better than politicians, well appreciated here. All have sacrificed their jobs or work area and have come here as a single body or organisation. This type of demands and suggestions to the govt. will lead our state and nation as a whole will bring more results and all politicians, police, teachers, justice, etc. will become more active and will work for the benefit of all. What a good cause and brave start in this modern world! We should progress like this. If our govt./MLA has not done anything in our area, should be put forward then only all will know, what is not happening as per our wishes. May God bless us all.

Wonderful job by brave Manglorean women. It is high time that women are protected in every respect. We need a very strong law in place and well reformed police force to safe guard women in India.I urge all the women in India not to accept house-maid jobs, instead create own employment at home as to avoid exploitation. People will support this cause and I am the first one to help. Women are the 'Light of the house'. Mother is always respected in the family for her sacrifice, love and unity. Therefore it is our fundamental right to protect women. I have seen sons carrying their old Mom on shoulders to visit temples and churches. Finally I wish soon India will have a Lady P.M. to prove that they are genius. Great thanks to all the organisations for their solidarity.

Police will work honestly only when there is awareness in the society about rights and duties. Therefore these kinds of protests are important. They bring awareness to all especially the police and build pressure and when there is pressure police work honestly.

This is really great, good job to all who supported this cause.

Roshan B.: First I cannot believe you are Braganza? most catholic men respect a woman's independence and stand right besides them in their fight for equality.

Also, (solely going by names) the hindu's and muslim's here who are often spoken of otherwise in the media, are showing such solidarity and support to this Cause.

Shows, stereotyping is not always right.

Which century are you living in Roshan B.? In today's world both men and women work.

While injustice and crime is wrong to either sex. Statistically women are victims at a higer rate than men both inside closed doors and outside.

Just please read the placards before going off on some tangent for arguments sake. There is nothing wrong for a woman to say "NO to sexual assault" to say "she should be given the choice to wear the clothes she pleases".

Also If there was a Forum to "Stop Violence Against Men", I am sure these girls & women will support you too. I know I would. So, be in the right spirit, and support women.

And a woman is not just a wife, but also a mother, a sister, a niece, a daughter, a good friend. So, before being nasty, step back and think please.

Also cry to make all criminal codes gender neutral . Press club and gathering on all major cities headed by women itself. Its women fighting for men rights now.

Roshan Braganza, Mumbai you are saying absolutely right. It’s become now GENDER Issue. Why women need to highlight the sexual assaults now and then? There are more than these are happening in India, Deaths, sickness, accidents, robbery, corruptions, murders, poverty, education, society, government system, cast and religions, family disputes, relation disputes and Love. Tackle these issues first and educate society and you’ll be honored by all men. Is not Moral police in India especially in Mangalore helps women for their safety?

Dear Namith, may be less pictures here, but where is the organisation that protested in Bantwal because the police were not ready to register a complaint of a boy who was beaten and pushed out of a bus. There were many women organizations in Mangalore who marched to DC office asking to release the padil heroes and now how come they fail to honor this International Women's Day march.

Laws are made in parliament so join the politics support for an honest attempt of Aam Aadmi party to bring change in the county.

The story goes like this!. While men are busy at work earning lively hood for family , their women at home have lot of spare time at home , enough time to organise themselves and exaggerate subjects like 'women victims'. Male or female are equally prone to crime and injustice ,so why the labelling as 'women victims'. Such a big list of NGO and organizastion , it would be worth if they get broadminded and fight for rights of downridden , poor instead women patrirchy............../.....The govt itself looks bowed down in front of feminists , where they changed gender neutral rape ordinance to gender specific. Now men have no right sand cannot complain on women who harrass them.Shame on goverment.

@Roshan Braganza: Don't tel about your wife who is sitting at home and has spare time, think of other ladies/girls/infants who are working, going to school n kindergarden - they are already under danger. rape / sexual assualt in school by teachers / in office by colleague / on road by a stranger / in Kinder.....by the owner - they are even in some cases. And if something happening wrong to (sexual assualt) you r free to report and protest with permission. Don't wait until the crime knocks your door.
