Mangalore: Child labour - DC orders inspection of houses, apartments

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore

Mangalore, Mar 9: Stepping up efforts to curb child labour in the city, the deputy commissioner N Prakash has ordered inspection of houses and apartments with immediate effect.

As per the orders, inspectors designated with the task of curbing child labour will carry out inspections in houses and apartments across the city.

Following complaints from some NGOs, the DC has instructed the officials to inspect the houses and apartments to verify the ages of young labourers who are hired for work, as per the guidelines under the labour law.

DC has appealed to the public to cooperate during the inspections.

Child labour is a major concern all over the world. There are hundreds of kids working in the houses and these children must be rescued. D.C. must see that these children are sent to proper rehabilitation center and nursed there. Thanks to D.C. for his bold move.No one has right to enforce child labour and it is a offence.

Many of the children rescued will be put in Govt. sponsored rehabilitation centres where management is very poor and these children are exploited and not the other way around.
I find C.K.Daynanda's views are good.
If the money Govt. had to spend on these poor children had reached them, they would not have gone to work or begging. When the authorities themselves are at fault why they want to restrict these poor people from earning their livelihood.

C K Dayananda, 100% I agree with you, cause even I worked as a child, and supported my siblings, as we lost our father when I was only 12yrs, I was working and studying, all got educated and today we all are well placed and rich, and we understand others pain. Always when I read similar article its shakes me and I think people don't understand by taking away their jobs, they will starve and not get educated but will turn out to be something else, so if anybody dosen't want child labour first think of helping them and then slowly wipeout child labour. If we would not work there would'nt be food in the house.

I agree with mr Gerald, just to remind a case here 3 years back the child welfare committee attacked a house with the media, due to ego problem they did not allow the girl to work though she was 17. she was illiterate, but was undergoing basic training in the house she was working. As soon the girl was sent back she people got her married. Is government thinking of rehabilitating them?

@ C K DAYANANDA, MANGALURU, Do you keep any child labour at your home???.. If you have school going children to which hotel are you intending to send them for works, since you think that if they do child labour they can become big personalities in the future...

CHILD LABOUR BEING OFFENCE AND DEPRIVES BASIC EDUCATION OF CHILDREN, CONCERNED DEPT. SHOULD APPLY SURPRISE VISITS AND BEFORE THAT ADMINISTRATION SHOULD ENSURE 100% BASIC EDUCATION WHICH CAN NOT BE DENIED BY ANY PARENT TO THEIR CHILDREN UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES AND PARENTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR SUCH LAPSE SINCE THE BASIC EDUCATION IS GUARANTEED BY THE GOVT. WHENEVER THE PARENTS ARE NOT IN A POSITION TO GIVE EDUCATION.

The Govt. is interfering unnecessarily and disturbing the social set-up.

Even the child has the right to work and earn money.

Some children are not good at studies and they want to support their family.

Even the school going children can earn money by working in hotels and as paperboys to support their education.

In fact, children who work and earn money knows the value of money and become responsible citizens.

There are many successful personalities who have laboured during their childhood.

If you restrict child labours, they may even become beggars.

In stead of restricting child labours, the Govt. should give work to child beggars so that they are rehabilitated.

The Govt. should only ensure that the children do not work in hazardous jobs.

The authorities should carry out inspection for possible child labour violation only on written complaint not randam inspection.

It is like ordering the police to knocking on every door every other day for possible illegal substance.

Most households have uneducated girl domestic help and they are vulnerable for intorogation and harrassment, especially when the man of the house is out to work. It is too much government involvement in private life. We are already restricted to what you can eat, with whom you can eat, what you can wear, how you can wear, with whom you can marry, how many children you can have, etc., etc. Where is the personal liberty and persuit of happiness?

Why don't you guys complaint to DC about the scrap picking children to rehabilitate them.

I will instruct my household not to open the door for anyone, even for DC, unless they have a warrant from the court.

I agree with you Mr. Thomas. These school teachers and management are worst than the child labour employers. School students are made to sweep the class rooms and do personal works of the teachers for free and with loads of scoldings and punishments. Action should be taken against such shameless people and penalty should be harsher than what is given to child labours. Atleast child labours are paid whereas school students are not paid.

Please eradicate the root cause for child labour which is POVERTY.These children do domestic work and support their family and the government instead of uplifting poor, want to snatch away the little income they get to survive.

For domestic work 14 plus girls or boys are legal. For heavy industries its 18. Populism is very irritating but it may flush out child victims. But rehabilitation is crucial. Heavy industries special chemical , queries , mines are more prone to abuse . Eg: Sivakashi light works , where thousands of child labours mess with their health moulding cyanide mixtures and lethal gasses. .
