Mangalore, Mar 9: A theft of valuables worth Rs 8 lac took place in Matsyagandha Express on Friday March 8 near Honnavar railway station.

The thief was reportedly aged around 30 years.

The vanity bag, belonging to Prema, wife of T Gopal Naik, contained gold jewellery, Rs 20,000 cash, pan card, house key and other documents, altogether worth Rs 8 lac, said Gopal Naik in his complaint.

Gopal Naik and his wife, residents of Thane, were travelling in S4 compartment from Mumbai to Mangalore.
At around 6 am as the train reached Honnavar station, an unknown man snatched the vanity bag from Prema and fled from the spot.

Railway police have registered a case.

As per the Railway manual there has to be an armed police man in each compartment. But the Railways have ignored their own manual. Likewise, on the Trivandrum - Nizamuddin ( New Delhi ) Rajdhani Express via Mangalore , the food, water & newspaper is paid for on the ticket. Yet the bearers who supply the food on this prestigious train demand tips. They know exactly where each pax is getting down and demand money if not they abuse you in hindi. I understand that this is part of a North Indian mafia and should be investigated. I am not aware of this madness on other trains plying on the Konkan route. I hope some high ranking Railway official reads this and investigates.

It is really absurd people carry valuables in the vanity bag. One can put the valauable things in the suit case and it can be chained and locked underneath the seat.I feel sorry for this woman who lost such a big amount.

There should be guards in all compartments always. Why others to allow in such bogies? Never keep such valuables so easily taken by robbers. Keep such things in a big bag and always tie the bag to a rod. All should carry a sticl to beat any robbers comes like that. Rest work police will do.

A sudden spurt in criminal activities on running trains has caused concern to the rail commuting passengers. According to sources, the railways recently carried out a survey which revealed that cases related to theft, snatching, drugging and robbery on running trains had increased these days. While the number of theft cases was 5,477 during 2009 across the country, the figure stood at 5,995 cases in 2010. However, about 3,500 cases of theft were registered till June 2011.
The railway authorities are planning to introduce a system through which live video footage from inside metro coaches will be scanned even when trains are in motion. Why don't they introduce it in all trains?

Mr. Anthony Daniel Pinto, your statement is partly true, because in some trains which you may had travelled, there you may have found them clean. Whereas, majority of the trains, as shown by the media, the filth is unbearable. A small example, I give you: I request you, if you happen to travel or reach Kankandady Junction Railway Station, you can recall to your memory your present statement about the cleanliness of the trains as well as surrounding area of railway station. You will realise, how filthy it is, as I have observed it myself when I went to meet some of my relatives. With regard to the robbery of baggage etc in trains, yes it is the passengers' responsibility. But if a person snatches the bag from a lady, what she can do? Can she expect, a snatcher will come to rob her bag!! Simultaneously one has to be vigilent bearing in mind that the thieves are everywhere and therefore, take extreme care!!!

If you must carry jewellery carry it in a heavier bag preferably chained to something till your station arrives. Also, keep it as secretive as possible. Never let others know that you are going to attend a marriage, etc..

Mr. Antony Daniel Pinto, Indian Railways is biggest network of trains and safest, cleanest and hvaing good hygeie Beacuse I travelled recently on Mangalore Junction Express and found very clean and the cleaners are immediately available on request. I still prefer train than Bus and it is the cheapest . It is the responsibility of every passenger to take care his/her valuabales. So please don't simply pinpoint the railways . One thing I noticed that now days people are very crazy talking in mobile without taking care of their children and belongings.I travelled in Kerala and even hawkers are limited and security are making rounds frequently. It is the purely neglizance of the passenger

I am sure police may know some of the thieves. There must be CCTV camera in every railway station & train compartments. Catching this thief should not be big problem unless there is no desire and will to do so!

When person snatching the bag, what other co-passenger's are doing..?? Would have taken immediate step to pull the train or would have caught him. Menance would have stopped on the post and would have identifed immediately who are involved in such acts. It looks like same gang involved earlier in 'drugging' the passengers who knows very well peoplg are travelling to attend any occasions and carrying gold items. Mangaloreans are very fond of wearing Gold Ornaments. Due to price hike even it's difficult to keep gold at home.

Railway travel, railway food everything has become risky for travellers....due to lack of police in railways, these criminals have been operating in the railways without being caught for a long time.
