These trucks that carry rods and any pointed metals are supposed to tie a RED CLOTH on the edge of these rods .This is missing on this truck which shows clear negligence. Also , when these type of goods are carried people should keep a distance of 15 ft so that when a sudden brake is applied the veichle behind has enough place to avoid the front truck and that he is not close to these rods and the last point is trucks are not allowed to move between morning 8.00 AM to evening 7.00 PM.They give bribe to RTO and keep moving to their destination.

Very unfortunate. All said and done , it appears at the outset that was not a place to stop any heavy vehicle. It's a slopy , hilly area with dangerous curves and nobody with a little common sense would stop a truck like that.

'Safe distance drive' is not practical in mangalore as the distance will be occupied by other vehicles in the blink of an eye. So only safe and slow drive may help to avoid accidents.People are aware of the traffic rules but how many of us applies them in real?

This is clearly the mistake of the Bike driver in not maintaining enough distance.
The RTOs are not trained on safety or they don't follow safety rules. Back in February, I was driving from Kundapura to Mangalore and I was stopped by RTO police near Suratkal(for unknown reasons). Upon stopping, he asked-Why didn't I wear the seat belt? He sent me to another officer sitting in the car on the opposite road. I asked him if I can park the car on the cornor so that I don't cause any block to other road users. He said, leave it and we will take care of it. I was afraid until I returned back to the car after paying the fine. While paying-I asked-Since when is the usage of seat belts made compulsory? The answer was-It is for the safety of the drivers, it's not comulsary in Mangalore, but we will impose fines whenever we like.
I didn't want to argue because I want to go back to the car and reach home early. But I still have the reciept of the fine which is 100 Rs for not wearing seat belts written on it.
Wearing seat belts is a good prevention. But stopping on the road side and imposing fine whenever they like is not at all a good idea. It's just money making.

This reason for this accident is because of failure to maintain 'Safe Distance' by the bike riders. Safe Distances vary depending on what speed you are travelling, what conditions you are driving in and what type of vehicle you are driving. Typically for a car simple rule of thumb is - if you are driving at 20 Kms speed leave a space of 1 car (Approx 2 Mts) and as the speed increases the distance need to increased proportionately. When you are you are driving at 80 you need to leave a distance of 4 cars in front of you or 8 Mts. (Usually this is called 2 second rule and applies in dry driving conditions for Car). Obviously the distance should be adjusted upwards for type of vehicle and whether condition.

The sad part of the licensing process in India is that no one will teach these basic stuff in the Driving Schools. All you need is to move the vehicle and drive it for few Kms to get the license.

The Safe Distance may cost you few more minutes to reach your destination but it will not cost your life.

Come on people its just common sense.. the accident took place because the bike rider just did not follow the simple traffic rule of keeping the right distance from the vehicle in front of him and was speeding and could not control his bike. SAD but TRUE.
The RTO Bribe is another issue in all.

MAY his soul RIP and let this be a lesson to all commuters to have a safe breaking distance from the vehicle in front of them.
The diver should have indicated that he is pulling to the left side of the road slowed down and then break not just step on the break just then.
Driver simply DO NOT care to switch the indicators even though its just takes a flick of a finger..this is applied to all rich, super rich and anyone who drives on the road and elsewhere as well.
End of the day its the corrupt system of getting the license even before you know the simple rules of the road.

FOLLOW TRAFFIC RULES AND BE SAFE AND KEEP OTHERS SAFE ASWELL.
STOP BLAMING OTHERS AND FOLLOW TRAFFIC RULES !
SAFE DRIVING GUYS N GALS !

The main reason for the accident is distance between the 2 vehicles,no one is following the traffic rules.2nd issue is the load on a truck or any vehicle should not extend the vehicle body structure.this should be made compulsory,so we can avoid so many accidents

I don't see any mistake from the RTO officials end except that they took bribe and left the place immediately after the accident happened. I don't think this truck might be moving at a speed more than 45~50 due to the load in it. As told by people and truck driver that it is suddenly stopped, which means driver would have applied sudden brake and with such load behind it, it should have skidded of the road or toppled which is not happened in this case. I have seen people driving crazily in mangalore. They go very close and all of a sudden they will take a turn with out even observing the vehicle coming behind and this is the main reason for accidents in mangalore.

This is totally unacceptable. In the recent past there have been almost 08-10 deaths due to road accidents. The traffic police need to gear up. The traffic is all chaotic in Mangalore. Only two signal lights at junctions in Mangalore. People honk for no rhyme or reason especially the bus drivers who drive you off the road thinking they are Lords and also keep honking non stop wz multi toned loud horns. Very unfortunate for all who have lost their precious lives.High time the traffic dept wakes up and does something for this city.

This RTO should be stoned in the middle of the same road by the public. killed a innocent life and ran from the spot as well. why cant we people protest harshly against this Ravan Rajya In Manglore by Government Officials.

Very unfortunate incident. Its difficult conclude about the lapses on Drivers of the vehicles. First RTO officials should only conduct at appropriate spots with ample space. They can be prosecuted. 2. Bike riders need to maintain minimum braking distance and must wear helmets. Follow the speed limits. 03. Truck drive carrying disproportinate size articles must maintain the appropriate speed and display warning signs. A pilot vehicle must accompany. 04. Citizens and NGO urgently need to focus on traffic issues. PIL will do wonders.

It is one's duty to maintain braking distance and not hit other vehicle from rear side. The vehicle in front might have to brake suddenly for many reasons. May be a child suddenly comes on the way. It is clearly bike guys fault.

Let us keep our emotions behind for few seconds.

With due respect to the soul of the deceased, I personally blame all the 3 parties involved in this tragic incident.

First of all, RTO officers who have stopped the vehicle without caring for the public safety.

Secondly the driver, even though RTO officials stopped the vehicle, why did he applied SUDDEN brake without looking from all the mirror of the trailer - left, right and centre of the vehicle he is also equally guilty.

Third, the bike riders should have kept a long distance as the trailer was carrying the iron rod. Most of the vehicle drivers do not take extra care while driving behind big goods carrying trailer vehicle in order to avoid any eventualities on the road.

May Durgaprasad soul rest in peace. Heartfelt condolences to the bereaved members of the family.

Right said Rajesh, In our place especially in Highways NH 17 & 48, while driving on long distance, if you decide to keep a distance of atleast 10-15 meters to be on the safer side another vehicle willl overtake you & come in between. In NH 17 it will express bus's who will nto allow you keep distance, in NH 48 it will be KSRTC's. even if you make 8 lanes of traffic, our people will never learn Lane disipline & the worst part is if anyone hits you from behind, you will also have to take his verbel abuse for braking, free of charge.

Two wheelers especially riding a bike is a passion and one has to extremely cautious while driving on highways.Keep confortable distance and drive in lane only.Do not overtake carelessly.Sudden applying brakes in the midst of road any whicles do cause harm to self or others.
I have seen in Mangalore city people are not concerned about deciplene much...hence all mishapes frequently.

    Very sad, indeed.

Normally, if RTO or Traffic Police needs to stop the moving vehicles, some sort of signs (like orange color drums, or Cons)should have been placed on the main road much ahead of the intended spot where vehicles need to be stopped. This gives ample time for the motorists to slow down the speed and enables drivers to stop the vehicle at the designated sport.

A sudden command to stop the vehicle on a fast moving road, in the case here, is definitely is against the traffic rule. The driver of trailer and two wheeler passengers are not to be blamed and the sole responsibility here goes on the RTO official.

The injured should file a legal case against the official for a heft compensation.
