Mangalore: Crime alert! Robbers in guise of police strike city, target women

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore

Mangalore, Mar 24: For the fourth time in the last two days in the twin coastal districts, robbers posing as CBI officers or police have looted women of their gold. The presence of such a gang had been reported earlier in places like Bangalore, but now they seem to have struck the coastal region too.

Women in Mangalore and Udupi have fallen prey to conmen who claim to be officers and scare them with a yarn about a 'murder' or some other crime in the area and tell them to keep their gold in their bags. The gullible women do as they are told, only to realize later that they had been fooled.

Similar incidents were reported in the city at Kottara on Friday March 22 and at Kodialbail V T Road and Ballalbagh on Saturday March 23.

On Saturday, Sumati (60) was on her way to give lunch box to her grandson at Canara High School, when two persons who were standing next to a bike called out to her and said that they were policemen in muftis. "A teacher by name Sharada has been murdered in this area. We are going to guard this area for two days. You are not allowed to wear gold while passing this area," they reportedly told her.

At that moment a third person (an accomplice) came to the spot and removed his gold chain and put it in his pocket. Sumati thought that when men themselves take such 'precaution', she too must do so, and removed her gold chain weighing two sovereigns, two gold bangles each weighing one-and-a-half sovereigns, and put them on a paper held out by the men.

The men pretended to tie up the paper wrap and handed it over to Sumati, who placed it inside her bag. The robbers then fled the spot on their bike in a hurry. Sumati grew suspicious about the urgency in which they left, and checked the paper packet in her bag. To her utter shock, she found an artificial chain in place of her valuable gold ornaments.

Bunder police registered a case and investigations are on.

Also, Ballalbagh resident Bhavani (70) was looted in a simiar way, allegedly by the same gang which hoodwinked her with the murder story. She lost two gold bangles and a gold chain. A case was registered in Barke police station.

In another incident on Friday, near Infosys at Kottara, a woman identified as Leela Karanth lost gold ornaments worth Rs 1.4 lac to robbers in the guise of police. Luckily, the culprits' images have been captured by a CCTV at Infosys campus and the police have released the image of one of the accused.

Police have asked the public, especially women to be alert and inform them immediately if they come across the gang.

The Moral-Police of Mangalore can easily catch these Fake-Police, only if the moral police keep eye on lonely old ladies instead of keeping eye on young girls. The Moral Police have good network of informers among hotel waiters, and these Conmen are not local people but they are from other districts and must be staying in some Lodge. So, Moral police can collect information from hotel waiters about such suspicious customers who come with motor cycles having registration of other districts and stay in the lodge.

@Ismail K. Perinje, bro, a senior citizen woman going to deliver tiffin on a deserted road wearing a 1.5lac chain is an open invitation to all sorts of criminals who are on the prowl to grab the first opportunity!! This is utter foolishness on her part!!! What police can do? What sort of satisfaction these women get by adorning gold on their bodies worth lacs when we hear from newsreports of people getting killed for supari of a few thousands!!

If one has got spare money enjoy yourself with family and friends or donate to some needy person in the family or do charity instead of losing your ornaments bought with hard earned money over the years to these conmen!!

The one and only way.......just avoid flaunting your wealth except in your family and inner circle, those times were in the bygone era!! And better, do not invest money in buying and hoarding gold, its of no use, buy gold bonds of nationalized banks if you want to invest!! Whatever inherited from ancestors keep it secure and safe for the coming generations!!

Until this fatal obsession of us Indians with gold goes, these type of conning activities will continue!!

I had a similar incident kind of incident when i went to shimogga , my in-laws house... luckily while arguing with him, a large number of public gathered.. and the guy who wanted to cheat me came to know that" i am smart enough to tackle him"... Couple of years back similar incident happened near moti mahal, when i was on a short vacation... My humble request to ladies across Mangalore: "Dont wear gold ornaments unnecessarily for show-ups . Instead of gold make use of other ornaments made from rold-gold etc... Take care of belongings thoroghly. Avoide to go with unknown persons for restaurants or other dine-outs. Because, now a days there are so many fake agents roaming across mangalore with different names.....

First of all we have to blame ourselves. How many of us read news paper everyday. How many of us watch the news everyday. Many of us doesn't know what's happening at our surroundings and at the outside world. We do not know the Law of our country. We are still fighting in the name of religion. We are still fighting with our relatives. We are the easy target for these kind of criminals.

Irani gang strikes again in the guise of Police and our real Police are groping in the dark even though this is the 8th such case within just one month in Mangalore-Udupi and all the victims are old women. Two years ago 120 Iranis were caught by Bengaluru Police and produced in the Court and released on Bail. So Bengaluru Police must be having the photos of these 120 irani criminals, which can be matched with the footage of CCTV of Infosys.

Bollu-Mangalore : please note that these Iranis are Indian citizens only. They are a Nomadic tribe but now well educated and can converse in several languages. They had used same modus-operandi even in Madikeri, but once caught and given to Police. Since then no such case recurred in Madikeri.

If they are Iranis, how come they are speaking local language like Tulu, Kannada?
Irani's speak Hindi is a different accent than Indians. Unless they have taken proper training to speak in Hindi, Kannada and communicate effectively, Iran's acting as Karnataka police personnel is a remote chance.

This con act was started years ago in Mumbai, but due to increased awareness the conmen have targeted rich Mangloreans flush with gold and money generated from realty and NRI funds!! And in a not so densely populated small city like Mangalore this type of conning is very very easy!! Best remedy do not flaunt your gold!!

It is utter foolishness on the part of women especially the old and housewives to go about wearing lacs worth of gold on them, those times are over!! Just wear some imitation jewellery of a think chain just to keep yourself adorned! Keep everything in the locker as a financial security or exchange for gold bonds!

Only in India this foolish obsession of wearing and collecting gold is on, the practice of which is burdening the national exchequer!

Also, in many cases there is a risk of life to the wearer coz in case of resistance they will even assault the victim!!

Is our Police department sleeping? Two days and four daylight robberies shows that the Police is not doing its duty. We see police standing at strategic points and penalising vehicle drivers (but they don't bother to regulate the traffic where there is dire need), but we don't see any police patrolling the area designated to them, either during the day or in the night. If they do justice to their uniform there would be no crime, no moral policing or any kind of illegal activity in the city. Dear City Police, please take some time for a little sour searching.

Be aware, this might be real police too. We have one incident of gold ornament robbery when Mr. Sanglian was the the Commissioner of Bangalore Police before 2004. The robbery was more than 20 lakh, on the market value of that time.
Ultimately it was the police personnel team involved in the robbery.
Women, when such incident happens, please call the crowd. If possible, from the mobile take photograph. One has to safe guard themselves. Prevention is better than cure.

Husbands/children please make sure, your wife /mother will wear artificial ornaments. It is much safer.

The growing menace of loots is continuing because police could not nab anyone so far either in Udupi or Mangalore. If caught at least once, some level of fear among these thugs would help minimize the incidents. Simultaneously, the womenfolk should also be alert and should not heed to these fraudulent and cunning white collar loafers.
