Abu Dhabi: Beggar caught with Dh22,000 'made in just hours'

Abu Dhabi, Aug 5 (Emirates 24|7): Abu Dhabi’s police seized 72 beggars during raids through the fasting month of Ramadan and one of them was found to have made nearly Dh22,000 in just hours.

Police said 36 of the beggars had come to the UAE on visit visas while 30 of them are residents and the rest are staying illegally. The beggars included 64 males and eight females and all of them were caught begging on streets and inside buildings.

“One Arab beggar was found to have made Dh22,000 while another had Dh14,000, they made the money in just a few hours,” a police statement said.

Begging is strictly banned in the UAE and other oil-rich Gulf states, home to nearly 20 million expatriates, mostly from other Arab countries, Africa and south Asia.

I am not sure if to put some alms on the palm of an extended hand or no!
It is because on Sundays' you can see lot of children who beg as part-time job and Healthy people beg on the street. Infact there is scarcity of availability for jobs as helpers and housemaids, at least in Mangalore. Men after begging you find them in the bar. So confused in this matter.

Begging is a Lucrative business. There are lots and lots of beggars in Mangalore especially at Hampankatta signal and outside churches on sundays. Time we stop giving alms. I have seen people fear out of curse from beggars and give alms. Just god has given 2 ears to listen good things and keep it in our mind so also for bad things we have other ear to leave it out. In the same we should think that the beggar's curse has gone or blown in the wind.

you are wrong eric, you can't decide who is healthy and who is eligible, your duty to give to those are extending their hand in front of you, it wil not take much time to almighty to change the scenario, from giving side to receiving side..

    Sumi / Kundapur,

Very well said, In fact most sensible and fitting reply I have read recently. We cannot stop giving turn down and send someone back just because we are not sure, he may be the deserving person and you may regret refusing him on the day of judgment.
