Bangalore: BJP dares Congress to include non-Hindu superstitions in Bill

Bangalore, Nov 7 (PTI): Opposing proposed legislation on anti-superstition and black magic in Karnataka, BJP today challenged the Congress Government to include superstitions practised by non-Hindu communities in the proposed legislation before it was tabled in assembly.

"There are so many superstitions practised by non-Hindu communities also in Karnataka. Let the Siddaramaiah Government include these practices in the proposed bill before tabling it in both Houses of the legislature," State BJP President Prahalad Joshi told reporters here.

Maintaining that the proposed bill, to be tabled during the upcoming winter session of Assembly at Belgaum, "hurts the Hindu sentiments," he threatened that BJP would stall the session if the government tabled it.

"We will do our best to oppose this proposed bill. We will not allow the session to run, if the government tables it in both Houses," he said.

Under the proposed Karnataka Prevention and Eradication of Human Sacrifice and Other Inhuman Evil and Gory Practices and Blackmagic Bill, 2013, promoters of various such practices exploiting people would be brought to book.

The bill also proposes the setting up of Karnataka Anti-Superstition Authority at the state-level and vigilance committees on superstitious practices at district levels for prevention and control of superstitious practices and protection of those exposed to their ill-effects.

He said there was no need for the government to enact law for bringing changes in Hindu society as Hindus have been relinquishing beliefs and practices from time to time.

"Reforms comes naturally for Hindus. There is no need for enacting laws to bring changes," Joshi said.

Replying to a query, Joshi said the Karnataka Government should not commit a mistake as Maharashtra had done by enacting such a law on superstition.

On providing security to BJP Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, he said the centre should provide SPG cover to the Gujarat Chief Minister for holding rallies.

I do not support any party or religion but y are people opposing this bill? Hindu or non-Hindu superstitions are a thing of the past made up by uneducated people. but now in this century i dont understand y oppose this bill? Do people still want to believe in superstitions? Even after they know the meaning of the word superstition? These are some things to think about. But personally i still feel a bill was unnecessary as an individual has his freedom of beliefs.

This is election time and as usual they want to create divide between communities and appear as the savior of a particular community. This tactic is being played by only Congress to garner votes.
But this time around congress people should know that people are literate and they have the brain to judge what is good for them and what is bad for them. There are a number of issues hanging fire like PDS, Education, Revenue etc. instead they are playing with a non-issue. One small example if Congress wants to eradicate superstition then how the Central Govt. Allowed ASI to dig for gold? This is not superstition?
People are requested to be vigilant in exercising their franchise. Keep in mind!

The government is doing the right by enacting law against superstition. Black magic and superstitious beliefs have ruined many families and babas are making merry by fooling innocent people. These babas include hindus, muslims and Christians and the law is applicable to all.

I can understand the hue and cry of fundamental elements in the society because this is the only way they can keep fear psychosis among people and keep them divided based on religious faiths. This is the requirement for their political survival. Anti-superstition activist Dabholkar was killed by these same people.

This bill is applicable for all faiths of people and not to one community. Once this bill is passed all the Dongi babas in the society will be without jobs in Karnataka.

I am sure this law is only applicable to the superstition in the society and not religious customs as claimed by Sangh Parivar. However this may be applicable to superstitious customs like made snana, removal of shirts while entering the temple which was purely made by powerful communities without any basis.

Let us give a hand to the government in eradicating the superstition within us and in the long run it will help the society in a big way

In Kerala in most of the temples it is compulsory to remove the shirts while entering like Guruvayur, Kodangallur, Vaikam, Ananthapadhmanbha, Taliparamba, etc. since ages. So it is a tradition, & we need not blame anyone.
We cannot expect a Lawyer/Doctor wearing t-shirt/mundu & doing his duty. So to get a discipline this temple this might have been followed. So the belief & practices should be let to people & devotees & it is not a business of government to control these things. If the intention is to harm someone or damage, it is a matter of concern. But faith in Astrology/Vastu/Religious Rituals & Practices, etc. should be let to people.

    Dear Mr. Mohandas Kapikad,

It is very simple to know why the practice of removal of shirts in the temple is being practiced. It is only to check if the person has janivara or not. If he has janivara he can be allowed up to Garbha gudi and for others a distance away. Please do not say this is for discipline. Discipline can be maintained with the shirt also.

I consider this as discrimination and should be eradicated immediately.

In Indian Society, we bow & seek blessings for our Parents, Elders, Religious Leaders, Sactum in Temples, as a sign of devotion, & not as competition/suppression. If one wishes to respect his religious Leaders, should he take permission for Budhijeevies/State Govt.? If we condemn other Religious Leaders it is wrong, but believing & honoring our own Religious Leaders is definitely good work.

This is Bill is purely biased, & seems to have a hidden conspiracy against faith & sentiments of Indian Majority.

Most of the provisions are targeting only one caste and community. He has left out animal sacrifice which is highly prevalent in central and northern Karnataka where thousands of buffalo, goats and sheep are butchered on a particular auspicious night just because they are practiced by backward communities like kurubas. If such a clause is introduced it will also hurt the muslims on Bakrid and also being practiced in many darghas. Similarly will he ban whipping their own bodies on Muharam or piercing the bodies on Easter.High time the CM thinks first before introducing the bill.I AM FOR BANNING ALL PRACTICES WHICH CAUSE PHYSICAL HARM TO INDIVIDUALS,BIRDS AND ANIMALS.

As per bill 13 practices are cognizable offense or evil practices.

*human sacrifice in the name of black magic
    *siddu bhukti
    *okuli
    *made snana
    *maata
    *pankti bheda
    *bethale seve
    *proclaiming to have spiritual power
    *voilent methods to cure disease
*keeping menstrual or pregnant women aloof
*vaastu, astrology, numerology: if prediction results in harm or financial loss.

I feel only the practices that can cause death or harm to others should be banned.
Rest is left to the individual, whether to follow it or not.

The Moral Bankrupcy of BJP stands exposed again. They bring religion into everything and prove that without religion, their party stands nowhere! Before opening their mouths, these guys should first read the draft bill. I read and convinced that the 11 recommendations given by the committee, if implemented, will bring about a great social change. Nowhere in the recommendation, a single religion has been targeted. In fact the second recommendation clearly means that all people (astrologers, mullas, babas, priests, etc) who are misusing religious beliefs would be punishable under the act. After all why BJP should worry about this? This is a just a draft and before it becomes a bill, it has to pass through and should be discussed in the Assembly.

So BJP has all chance in the world to bring in their concerns, have them discussed and then change the draft wherever necessary. So why go around 'bitching about' even before reading the draft? Actually they thrive with these kinds of propagandas and division of society. In the last 10 years they have done the same thing at the Centre. Instead of allowing the Parliament to function and then bring in their grievances, they disrupt the functioning. Instead of discussing the issues in the Parliament, they discuss them in the streets, rallies, social websites which show that they are not ready for discussion but want only to preach discourses to a listening and un-questioning audience. Same rhetoric dialogues! Religion, culture is in danger, pseudo-secularism, Sonia, Rahul, Gandhis etc. I have not seen any of them speaking on anything else other than this. Even their PM designee, instead of placing his vision, his intentions, his plans for the nation, his foreign policy, his stand on various issues plaguing out the country, speaks only about Sonia, MMS, Rahul and Gandhis. Nothing else! And he wants to be PM just because he leads a rudderless party that hates Gandhis. Disgusting!

If you say it is moral bankrupcy of BJP, you should redefine what you mean. The issue is raised unnecessary by Congress as no one is bothered about it, it shows moral bankrupcy of Congress.

Besides, if you take the only moral, yes I agree that superstitions is bad, but secular enough to say irrespective of religion. But why Congress wants to project only Hindu superstitions is bad shows the intention is bad.

Remember very well that India is Hindu majority that is the reason you are safe. The moment muslims increase more than 50%, within few minutes India will be d as an Islamic country. At least feel happy for the good heart of Hindus (of course your ancestors too are Hindus, neither Muslims nor Christians)
