Mangalore, Nov 9: "Road connectivity is a major problem in the city. Due to the poor road condition, most of the exporters have diverted their business to other places. Even after several appeals to elected representatives, there was no positive response. Industry and other developments can take place if there is political will," said R Shivakumar, president of Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI).

Addressing reporters at the conference hall of KCCI, Bunder on Saturday November 9, Shivakumar said, "We later appealed to ministers including transport minister Oscar Fernandes to soon sort out the connectivity problem. He has responded to us positively, but work has not yet begun.

"In an effort to decongest Bangalore city and promote the IT sector in secondary cities, the Karnataka government has chalked out plans to set up IT parks in Belgaum, Mysore and Mangalore. The government intends to develop these parks on a public-private partnership (PPP) mode," he said.

Briefing about the development potential of the district, Shiva Kumar said there are various issues which need attention. Listing out a few, he said Karnataka government should bring the same rules on CRZ which are existing in other states, and also construct a tunnel road bypass in Shiradi Ghat. He also urged that the 900 acres land belonging to Jaiprakash Industries in the city be taken back by the government and alloted to a new industry; withdrawal of trade license; withdrawal of increase in VAT by 0.5%; speedy completion of projects signed at coastal development summit in January 2012 and so on.

Liberal Tourism policy

Stressing the need for a liberal tourism policy, he said the city has high potential to boost its tourism. "Mainly, the city should solve connectivity problem and encouragement should be given to PPP model in tourism. The government should also set up regional tourism zones in every district," he added.

Representation to KCCI

KCCI should get representation in KDP meetings, single window meetings, coastal development, fisheries development board, Western Ghat development board and others, he said, stating that FKCCI should also be nominated to various developmental boards in the region.

In his concluding remarks, he said FKCCI will see to it that the state government takes proactive steps to develop this region in order to achieve a well distributed and balanced socio-economic growth in the state.

FKCCI vice-president Tallam R Dwarakanath, KCCI president Mohammed Ameen, Sudhakar S Shetty, FKCCI and KCCI office-bearers among others were present.

The lack of proper, well maintained roads are the real cause of worry to the development of the upcoming Mangalore city. Let our people go to Goa and see how they maintained the roads which is the major factor for the fast development of Goa. Hope the local administration and the MLA look into this matter seriously and do the needful. They can also go for forming the new scheme of road adoption from companies and richest people.Thanq.

simple, Bangalore, thank you for noting my comment and your advice to inform
Though my idea is simple, it needs support, being it cannot be a one man show
It is not only a local concern, but serious issue of national and global importance
Due to the impossibility to reach the authorities, enough been informed to the media
Huge funds being planned on the table, getting exhausted prior to reaching the aim

We dig well where no water, search where no treasure and sow seeds in the desert
Our youth power being wasted in electronic media and on health hazardous fun
Fashion, tradition and culture our priority, ignoring the issues of serious concern
Mobile has disconnected the landline as well as all relations, being a smart phone
Education has become commercial and employment the influence & fight for a seat

Our lavish spending on fuel is the reason to buy pollution, displeasure and disaster
An idea to change our life and a concept change to solve our severe problems
Bullock carts are not on roads, the reality is we carry and move them on wheels
If realized the fact with open eyes, surely we regret and embrace the change
A rapid revolution is for exciting and incredible solutions, with amazing benefits

    Dear Tony Pinto,

FKCCI President, & Road & Transport & Highways Minister Mr.Oscar Fernandes travel by Air to Mangalore & not through Shiradi Ghat Road. They r least bothered about hundreds of buses, trucks & car owners who drive on this Pathetic Shiradi Ghat every day. Crores rupees r sanctioned year after year for the repair of this Ghat & the money has been pocketed by Corrupt Politicians & third grade Contractors. Every politician is aware of the situation. But their main motto is to pocket the entire amount meant for repairs of Roads works. So we can expect nothing from these corrupt politicians unless we look for a Change in 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

Having been frequent travelers to Mangalore, we have been pondering with the thoughts in our own minds and unable to comprehend why we have failed so miserably in our road conditions all over. Is it the fast growth of the economy that has triggered so much of traffic added with so much of industrial growth that is causing us untold consequences of our road conditions, or is it the lack of economic resources or perhaps the technological support that is lacking in producing the type of roads that we deserve. Do we need to seek foreign support?

Growth of population added with growth and progress in all sectors of commerce and trade obviously brings multitudes of infrastructural growth that obviously brings congestion in our daily road traffic. But the length and the width of our roads have never changed ever since my childhood while the buildings have surfaced all over with the growth of population. So what is the solution? Where do we go and whom do we talk to?

It is now even proving to be dangerous to cross the roads because of the massive traffic that never ends while the streets are narrow, the roads have potholes with noise all over.

There is so much of auto emissions that is causing so much of pollution that will be detrimental to the health and welfare of the people - the noble, tolerant and understanding people of our home town. Our roads are flooded, our temples, mosques and churches are flooded, and so also our hospitals are flooded. There is a chain of consequence that surrounds the daily life of people bringing tensions, stresses and daily pressures of life. This will bring further consequences that will bring further deterioration to all that we are planning and programing in this vibrant town of ours.

Please, Mr.Oscar Fernandes and Mr. J. R, Lobo and many others, do something in the interest of people because people are the best assets that you have who will vote for you as our best leaders that will guide the destiny of our beloved hometown.

Mangalore City has a friendly road, a good old road a wide road, it is a road, which is being criticized only by each & every genuine licensed shop-keeper. One can see the development where he cannot move either his vehicle or he cannot walk stretch his arms in a normal style. The road a simply & meaningfully called MARKET-ROAD.Here anyone can do&sit at any point without any restriction, permit, license, whatever. One can start from the junction at the main gate of Central Market and move watching carefully of course with his personal things, till you reach GHSchool junction.
Now, simple and delicate thinking always come across,as the safety of commuters, illegal sellers on the roads, & the vehicles passing & using the road in case of brake failure.

Shameful on the City Corporation, when a rule or bylaw says that no one, within the radius of 200 yards or so,outside CENTRAL MARKET complex,is allowed to do the veg& fruit business.
When a licensed shopkeeper was contacted,he uttered with great pain, that the advantage goes as Hafta like arrangement is being carried from these illegal enchrochers and the figure crosses20,000 not less!!!!bugs.Sundays particularly!!! .
Would anybody ,any good officer take interest& save unruly things happening.
Sometime back we remember, there were raids on such illegal people by naming TIGER on the road. But instead take over the road by concerned authorities before dawn and restrict unauthorized persons.
By allowing 2way traffic & allowing alternate day parking of vehicles on both side may be fruitful to make this wide MARKET ROAD a beautiful one.

    Dear All,
We all r aware that after 66 years of our independence, our roads all over India r gone to dogs. The roads even built by Britishers r not maintained well. Our politicians r busy in giving speech, attending felicitations & giving empty promises. They will never ever bother to repair the roads.Regarding tourism, they do not know the meaning of tourism. When we felicitated our ex CM Mr. Kumaraswamy in the officers club in Abu Dhabi when he visited UAE many business men in UAE explained to him the tourism potential in our coastal area in Mangalore & urged him to develop our Mangalore as a main tourism destination & his promise remained in the air.Our Present Mangalore south MLA Mr.JR Lobo recently visited UAE.I hope he will take some action in this direction. If the roads r bad why not FKCCI president Shivkumar directly contact Oscar Fernandes instead of giving a press conference & wasting his time.If any one of U wants to send mail to Mr.Oscar, please do so to his Email Id:oscar@sansad.nic.in. Probably our repeated mails & reminders may force him to look into this matter.

Dear Maxi, John D'sousa & all the readers & commentators of DW,

I would like to inform U all that on 27th October 2013, I personally met Mr.Oscar Fernandes outside the St.Patrick church in Bangalore at about 7 pm. I introduced to him that I am hailing from very close to his house, in Ambalpady of Udipi. After the introduction I pointed out the pathetic condition of Shiradi Ghat in Saklespur. Instead of giving me a positive reply, he spoke about tunneling the Ghat road. Then I told him that I am a senior citizen & hence I may not be able to see the light of the tunnel, but our immediate requirement is to Concrete the complete Ghat road.

After our meeting, I came home & sent two mails urging him to give instructions to the concerned authorities to repair the Ghat Road on priority basis. But there is no response for my mail. And I am sure we may not expect from him anything regarding road development & road connectivity from him.

Mangalore is developing at very fast phase but the elected representative should first see the infrastructure of the city like good road. The work from Mangalore city to udipi/kundapur as very slow progress somebody has to take lead to finish the job.Like all other state Mangalore should have metro from manglore city to dharmasthala and subramanin. The metro should be phase I or II by seeing the geographical area.Even I suggest Mono rail will work very nice for mangalore so the interior rural will good excess to rail instead depend on pvt bus.It is a wake up call to elected representative to work for the development of mangalore.

Mangalore needs Rishiraj Singh like officer to tackle the buses. If that is done 75% of the accidents will come down.

Roads need detailed planning. The road from Mangalore to Suratkal doesn't have a drainage to drain the rain water during the rain which will be fatal for two wheelers.

FKCCI please wait don't be in a hurry for development of the districts. Development is always an issue of election not for implementation. Let Our CM Siddaramayya Pass some important bills/schemes like Anti Superstition Bill ,Shadi Bahgya Schemes, Anti communal Bill once its finished will think about development .

denzil, being at Mangalore ask this your neighbor oscar (cabinet minister for road & transport). now may at ur door of minorities for votes. Let him come out with solution plan & not bureaucratic hurdles of his own govt. for him to be effective at the state level he must improve his own visibility at parliament. it ,seems our pmo`s are minority vote garnering puppets for congress, and shine only on local community stages.masses(NOT CLASSES)WILL SING THEIR PRAISE &HONOR THEM WITH SHAWLS .REST ISKAO KUJAO, BATTI BUJAO AUR SO JAO.

Multiplying and mushrooming tiny vehicles on roads is not a solution to meet the increasing transport demand of the rapidly growing volume of commuters and goods.
Surface transport sector can have a rapid revolution, if we make the BULL (engine) to move THE CART (commuters/goods) on wheels, instead of carrying and moving THE BULLOCK CAR, on wheels.
The conceptual change in vehicles can reduce a huge volume of fuel consumption, save billions of dollars, eliminate pollutions, reduce costs of manufacturing, running and maintenance of vehicles and provide adequate transport facilities to commuters and goods, eradicate the Current Account Deficit and have a comfortable Foreign Exchange Reserve.
Saved huge amount (funds) can be utilized on roads, infrastructure and development projects and hence to create enormous job opportunities.
We can plan to have a peaceful society, stable economy and clean environment.
