Mangalore, Nov 15: The students and a staff member of School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya were among the passengers of the ill-fated Mangala Express train that derailed near Nashik in the early hours of Friday November 15.
The team had a narrow escape when the 12618 Nizamuddin-Ernakulam Lakshadeep Mangala Express train derailed at Ghoti near Igatpuri in Nashik district at around 6.20 am.
Ten students and a staff member of Roshni Nilaya were travelling on the Mangala Express returning from Delhi when the tragedy struck.
The students and the faculty member were on a special camp in Uttarakhand organised by the government and the students were selected by the NIMHANS Institute. The trained students fulfilled their rehabilitation work over a period of one month and were set to return home to Mangalore.
However, they could not get a direct train to Mangalore, and hence they went to Delhi from where they caught the Mangala Express train.
Fortunately, the students were unhurt in the tragedy.
The duty conscious students soon set themselves to the task of rescuing those who were injured. The bravehearts, unfettered by the incident, helped the rescue teams in getting the injured to safety.
The students then took another mode of transport and started their journey back home.
At least three passengers were killed and 30 injured when 10 bogies of the Nizamuddin-Ernakulam Mangala Lakshadweep Express derailed near Nashik early Friday, officials said.
