New Delhi, Aug 24: Postpartum recovery is a delicate phase when mothers need the right balance of rest and nutrition. Highlighting the importance of food choices, nutritionist Lovneet Batra in her latest Instagram post shared a list of items new mothers should avoid, along with healthier alternatives to aid recovery.
“Postpartum recovery needs the right foods to heal, balance hormones, and support breastfeeding,” she wrote, stressing that diet plays a central role in regaining strength.
She pointed out that tea, coffee and green tea hinder iron absorption, suggesting lemon water with iron-rich garden cress (halim) laddoos instead. For energy and mood swings, she advised avoiding biscuits and refined carbs, recommending foxtail millet khichdi with moong dal and ghee as a wholesome option.
On bone health, Batra urged mothers to stay away from processed and salty foods that increase calcium loss, and opt for black sesame, jaggery and gond laddoos which boost calcium and lactation. For gut health, she recommended warm rice kanji with ajwain in place of cold green smoothies.
Caffeine, she cautioned, can disturb sleep cycles. As an alternative, she suggested turmeric milk infused with cardamom and nutmeg, a traditional recipe known to calm the nerves and aid overnight recovery.
Batra concluded that choosing nutrient-dense, warm, and traditional foods helps mothers restore strength, balance hormones and support breastfeeding.
