Mangalore, Nov 25: "Christian community has been the pioneer in bringing education in our country, apart from rendering selfless services in the field of healthcare and social services. Our missionaries opened tens of thousands of schools and institutes of learning, not only for Christians but also for all other communities of the society. People of many communities who studied in our institutes were able to build up due and adequate representation in the political, administrative and judiciary fields by taking active participation. But our community has miserably failed to hold the required representation, which has resulted in sidelining of our community in all matters of providing even nominal positions. IKFCA is working towards encouraging Christian youth to actively get into the political field from grassroots level, for example gram panchayat, taluk panchayat, city corporations and assemblies by actively involving themselves," said Ronald Colaco, president of International Federation of Karnataka Christian Association (IFKCA).

He was addressing a meeting of Christian leaders organized by IFKCA on Friday November 22. Leaders of the community, Christian corporators, panchayat members and others were present.

Colaco further said, "We Christians are known for our immense contribution to education. Earlier there was Gurukul system where education was reserved only for the upper class, however, after Christian missionaries came to India there was no such barrier in education.

"National poet Kuvempu had once said that it was due to education imparted by the missionaries in slums and villages across the country that he was able to get educated and could thus become a national poet. If today there is so much development in the country, it is because the contribution of Christian missionaries in services and education sectors has played a major role in the achievements of the country," he added.

Stressing on the need for the community to be more active, he said, "We have failed to show our strength as an electorate. That is why politicians feel the Christian community is not influential or the deciding factor in elections. If this trend  continues the atrocities against Christians will not stop. Fundamentalists portray 'conversion' as an excuse to sideline the services of Christians. Hence, everyone must register themselves in the electoral list. We are not here to fight, we are peace lovers. IFKCA will never entertain anything that is against the law."

"For several years Christians did not have a strong organization and that is why whenever there was any issue against the community no one dared to raise their voice and no one came together, as there was no organization. I urge everyone to encourage people to get into active politics, bureaucracy, judiciary and such sectors. We (IFKCA) have taken it seriously and will work towards it. We have imparted eduction but lagged behind when it comes to getting into these sectors. This is our weakness, and it is high time we correct ourselves," he added.

He also stressed on the need for proper security for our educational institutions, churches, prayer centres, and elsewhere. "The fundamentlists are using the conversion tag to destroy our good work," he said, calling upon the community to work together unitedly as an organization.

"IFKCA will establish more centres to learn the needs of the people, build the network and provide all the privileges and benefits that are available for minorties from the government to them. It will also act as a bridge between the people and the government to ensure that government schemes and amenities reach them, especialy the Dalit Christians. This is just a beginning and from here we have to go on, let us all join our hands together to protect our community, " Colaco entreated, urging people to keep the community's and the society's interests above personal agendas.

Dubai-based entrepreneur Frank Fernandes in his address said, "All other communities come together whenever anything happens to any individual of their community, but in our community we do not. Nevertheless, today we are blessed to have something that will enable us to raise our voice."

MLA J R Lobo cited several examples wherein Christians were either denied government facilities or had to face atrocities because of lack of adequate Christian representation. "There is a need to fight for reservation and protection of Dalit Christian, as they are poor and need government facilities," he said.

Lauding Ronald Colaco for establishing IFKCA, he said, "IFKCA can sort out the problems faced by Christians. This is not a time to be afraid or sit back. We need to raise our voice. We need to take up politics and administrative services. Although we are less in number our contribution to society is immense, but we need to use our brains and work."

Advocate M P Noronha said, "When there is any atrocity against our community we fight back only by posting comment on daijiworld or writing letter to the editor of Raknno, but we have no guts to fight directly. The reason is that we did not have an association to lead us. We hope IFKCA will fulfill this need and enable us to fight from booth-level."

IFKCA state coordinator Denis D'Silva in his address said, "I am happy that on a short notice we have all come together. There was IFKCA meeting in Dubai recently with leaders of the community, wherein as many as 30 associations came forward to affiliate with IFKCA. Our main goal is to encourage Christians in all sectors through their existing organizations all over the world and also to strengthen our community and fight against atrocities."

IFKCA Mangalore president Roy Castelino welcomed the gathering.

A power point presentation on IFKCA briefed the audience on the formation of the association, its objectives, achievements, work done and so on.

Walter Maben, president of Karnataka Missions Network offered the prayer.

    Dear Mr. Colaco:

I truly appreciate your generosity irrespective of castes and gives to the charity in big amounts. You are really sharing the burdens of the needy. As Mr. John D'Souza said, that your name should be recommended for Bharat Ratna, we Christians in India and even those benefited by your donations why you should not get the Bharat Ratna. We will definitely ask Mr. Oscar Fernandez for a special consideration and he will definitely do it. I shall personally ask him to do if you permit me. I am sure not a single man from India will object. May God bless you.

God bless you Colaco for such a great contribution and your dedication towards Christians youth and community. I have no words to express other than say thank you and god bless you with more wealth and love to share with all needy. We Christians and our missionaries are good in educating others but forget our own soul which is why we are loser in the public sector, politics, courts, police force, army, navy. Our youth will serve very honestly to India if they get the opportunity to service with transparent clean ways. hope we all can contribute towards this organisation and make a super around the world

I hope and pray that all Christians will set aside their disagreements and will fight collectively for social justice, prosperity and religious persecution.

I salute the IFKCA for taking this bold step at the right time.

We Christians that are salt and the light must shine in politics, administration, business, social work, and in leading India out of darkness.

Education is not an ancestral property, but it is by knowledge and experience.
We still have the chance to be a strong leader (local, state, national and global).
The need is to accept, support and implement the change to have solutions.

Great beginning of IFKCA. There is much more to do. Since long time I felt we Christians fell short in leading the education system in Mangalore, which is the center of education and leadership. While other institutions saw the void and ran away with the leadership leaving Christians falling behind. Christian missionaries started the education system in Mangalore, now we are far behind. We need to establish a Catholic University of Mangalore, joining the liberal education from St Aloysius, St Agnes, Engineering education from St Joseph, and Medical education from Fr Muller’s Medical College. We have all the elements for a world class Christian education system in Mangalore, and we should regain that seat. That would spring forth Christian leadership in the society. I hope we wake up.

There is a necessity of Christians to be the leader among the all people not leader among the community.Honest and decent people cannot be a leader in bike rallies, morcha, dharna, vedikes. The worst characters of the politicians bared our parents to encourage their children even in school elections. Politics, Police, lawyers, government employees where seldom chance to be honest in India. As the society change we hope Christians also in active politics and efforts and vision of Mr. Colaco may bring new rays of hope in our Christian community.

Its a noble cause started by IFKCA to prepare our future generations towards the right path. We have started lately realizing where we lack!
Presently our community situation is that we try to pull the legs of each other and each community organizations have their own agendas, So all our demands/needs are being ignored by Major Politicians & Bureaucrats...
All our christian community organisations across world regardless of Catholic/Protestant/New Life etc should get them affiliated to IFKCA, So we can stand united in times of troubles. Jai Ho!

In Abu Dhabi & Dubai itself there are lot of associations like mushrooms in Christian community, and everyday we find a new association either it is milagarians or allosians, bondelites and so and so, what for?, we shrink instead uniting, like nuclear fission instead fusion, we must come together under one umbrella, unite and work with higher leadership like Mr Colaco,

Don't worry Mr. Vivek about mushrooming associations.....don't you have states and districts to run a country? don't you have dioceses' to run a archdiocese? They are all like a family members coming together for the purpose of entertainment. Here as a IFKCA we are all together aiming at a purpose. But the goal should be bringing up our community first.

Nothing wrong having a small informal association based on parish or locality. This gives the platform for parishioners/local people to know each other and when the need arises, for help they can expect support from these local associations.

Being light of the world and salt of the earth, we are an able and a strong community
We have an option to be the leader of a rapid revolution of the surface transport sector
The weight on wheels can be used as a pushing force, to save a huge volume of fuel
An opportunity to create enormous job opportunities, through development projects
Automobiles have been carrying and moving the bullock cart on wheels, for centuries
Facing the several severe problems of expensive fuel, pollutions, costs and transport
A conceptual change can make a world of difference with excellent solutions and benefits

We, Christians think it is the responsibility of the parish priest, if anything goes wrong that place. I suggest along with the catechism, the church should intiate public speaking, leadership, etc. to the young generation from 8th to 12th std. thru their organizations. These organizations should affiliate to the above.

I fully agree with you. Children from the young age in christian schools should be encouraged in taking part in debates, public speaking and leadership apart from catechism which is important for inculcating character. There are many Christian institutions and one of them is Ryan International Schools spread all over India, which encourage extra curricular activities in children of all religions.
