Daijiworld Media Network - Dubai

Dubai, Nov 26: Daiji Dubai, a forum of Konkani writers in the UAE will celebrate its 15th anniversary in Mumbai with a grand event.

The gala celebration will be held at Dr M Vishveshwarayya Smarak Mandir in Matunga, Mumbai on January 26 (Sunday). This is the second time in the history of Daiji Dubai that its annual event is being organized outside Dubai.

Daiji Anniversary which has always been a high-profiled and professionally managed entertainment programme is considered one of the prestigious Konkani events patronized by a wide audience every year. It has been a tradition to confer the prestigious ‘Daiji Puroskar’ on a Konkani literary personality during the event. The Puroskar carries a cash award of Rs 50,000, the first award of such amount as far as Konkani language is concerned. The selection for the award is under process and will be announced shortly.

Another highlight of the the magnificent celebrations in Mumbai will be the staging of critically much-acclaimed superhit play “Aami Nathlyaa Vellar”, which has already received tremendous accolades in Dubai, Udupi, Bangalore, Doha, and Abu Dhabi. Now Daiji Dubai has taken the courageous step for hosting two more repeat performances in the financial capital of Mumbai - at Matunga and Mira Road.

The Matunga event on January 26 will be managed by St Peter’s Association, Barkur, a very popular association in Mumbai, which recently celebrated its silver jubilee.

On public demand the same play will be staged at Mira Road on Saturday, January 25, 2014 at 6:30 pm at St Joseph’s Church open ground by Konkani Community of Mira Road Parish under the Banner of St Joseph’s Konkani Welfare Association, in aid of special charity cause.

This top class drama has been performed to a full house show wherever it was presented. The play, a blend of emotion, suspense and comedy has captured the hearts of Konkani theatre lovers with its electrifying moments and high voltage performance by amateur artistes from Daiji Rang Mandhir.

The original, penned in Marathi by Madhusudan Kalekar, then played in Kannada and translated by Ramanand Choorya (NaviIlladaga) has created ripples wherever and whenever it has been staged. The play was later translated to Konkani and Tulu as well. The play is based on the true life story of a naval commander and his family, which became a sensational case in Mumbai way back in 1959. This play has created a record of over 5,000 shows in Marathi, Kannada, Konkani and Tulu, and had also has inspired Bollywood movies in the 60’s and 70’s.

Dayan D’Souza, the versatile, multi-talented actor and founder of Daiji Dubai, has directed the play in addition to playing a stellar role in the drama. Accompanying him are Walter Nandalike, Asha Correa, Regan Fernandes, Alphonse D’Souza, Nanu Marol, Pradeep Barboza, Alwyn Pinto, Godwin Castelino, Lavina Fernandes, Cynthia Pinto and many more. Kethan and Arun will be provide the music.

Besides its cultural identity in Konkani literary causes, ‘Daiji Dubai’ is also associated with many worthy social causes thereby motivating other people and organizations worldwide. Daiji Dubai is eagerly looking forward to present this event with a request to Mumbai Konkani drama lovers to be present and mark their calendar for Saturday January 25 and Sunday January 26, 2014.

More details will be announced on daijiworld.com in the coming days.

I am member of daiji dubai since the year 1999 the year it was established. Also as I am the only member from Mumbai, I am very much thrilled about its anniversary being celebrated in my home town. It is hard to believe that 15 years are passed. When I left dubai to settle down in Mumbai I never dreamt that daijidubai will celebrate its 15th anniversary in my home town.
I wish all the best to the daiji dubai team for all its efforts in giving us the opportunity to participate in its 15th anniversary. I am eagerly waiting for that day.
