Wellington, Nov 28 (IANS): The woman found killed in her Welligton home in New Zealand earlier this week has been identified as Sarwan Lata Singh. Police said Thursday she was of Indian origin.

A man whose name was suppressed appeared in the Wellington district court Wednesday on charges of murder and aggravated burglary at the Indian-origin woman's home, Fairfax media reported Thursday, adding that the accused was found also to have breached a protection order that the woman had earlier taken out against him.

A protection order is a legal order issued in New Zealand to protect a person against a perceived threat. Such orders have been issued in the country since 2010.

After receiving an emergency call around 1.17 a.m. Nov 26, police went to the woman's Kentwood Drive home and found her dead. The man had also suffered injuries.

Police confirmed that the accused and the woman knew each other, but did not reveal more about the nature of their relationship.

Chief executive Heather Henare of Women's Refuge, a non-profit organisation dedicated to the prevention of violence against women, said she was saddened that despite the protection order, the woman had died.

The woman's killing occurred a day after White Ribbon Day, a campaign for an end to violence against women and children.
