Mangalore, Mar 8: Hundreds of girl students, most of them dressed in white, on Saturday, March 8 took out a silent march from St Agnes College to Dr Ambedkar circle Balmatta, on the theme, ‘Walk for the Girl Child’.

The march was organized by the women’s cell of St Agnes College in commemoration of the International Women’s Day. It was followed by a formal programme.

Addressing the students during the formal programme, Nivedita Mirajkar, member of Mangalore Toastmasters' Club asked girl students to break their silence and use every opportunity that comes their way.

"Men conquered the world as they had opportunities. This is also possible for women, if given the right opportunity. In India, not all women are privileged. Help those women who are under privileged. Give them sustainable livelihood more than charity," she added.

Quoting anecdotes where educated people committed heinous mistakes, Mirajkar said that the formal education gives only an understanding of knowledge and does not bring change of attitude unless one wishes to change. "The states with highest literacy rates have witnessed more number of crimes," she said.

Dr Marie Prem D’Souza, principal of St Agnes College felicitated four students for their outstanding achievements in different fields.

Rarely find man who opposes girl child to be born, but this is mother's who choose. More children are on line to come to the world, but less woman has the strength to bear the pain of childbirth in the present generation. Many of us would not have born if our mother choose one or two only.

It is International Womens DAY. Every woman has to be respected on that day.By name you sound belonging to the feminine gender.A woman writing a hatred comment to a woman on this special day should be ashamed of herself.

Dear Students, Please vote for AAP this time. All your worries will be stopped. If you vote, Congress or BJP, you need to walk silent walk every year without any changes in society. Walk, walk and walk only.

Why only girls are fighting for a good cause. Where are Mangalore Boys. Their support is very important .Take them along. The day St. Agnes starts co-education, the boys start respecting girls.

Right move on a right day. I salute with filled thankful heart. Several reasons like child labor, early marriage, lack of infrastructure and being discriminated against, force the girl child to stop her education these days even. Not to be forgotten, when we educate a girl we enable better choices for herself, her family and her community.

At least one in three girls and women worldwide has been beaten or sexually abused in her lifetime. Let all of us think about this serious fact.

I am proud of my daughter today who was a part of this genuine walk though she was not well in her health. May God bless each girl child.

Very apt and timely movement. Let me remind the ladies, Women are the biggest envy for girl killing. Who kills them?(Most of the time it's the Mother. Without her consent no one can touch or kill)
