Indian businessman Mohammed Ali jailed for 15 years in Oman

Muscat, Mar 10 (IANS): Two Indian nationals, including a former managing director and a manager of a multinational engineering company in Oman, were among seven persons convicted and sentenced to jail in five bribery cases.

Muscat Primary Court Sunday sentenced former managing director P. Mohammad Ali and a manager, whose name is not mentioned in the report, of Galfar Engineering to 15 years in jail in all the five cases of bribing an oil company's officials, the Times of Oman reported Monday.

Five Omani nationals from a state-run oil sector firm have also been jailed.

Ali has to pay 1.774 million Omani rials (about $259,7403) and the Indian manager from the same company 534,000 Omani rials as fines.

Apart from that, the court has also ordered that both the Indian expatriates be deported after they complete their jail terms.

A native of Kerala, Ali is the founder and managing director of Galfar, one of the biggest construction firms in Oman.

It's greed which made him suffer thinking more influential and having ties with Bureaucrats he got the other company who got the contract on competitive bidding got evicted causing loss to the company in millions of dollar which is outrageous and condemnable. The Indian Businessmen want to grab everything with fair or foul means and in the end eat the dust. The greed and dishonesty is not liked by Almighty

If in this world just because someone has provided employment, the Govt.of Oman should be lenient in Ali's sentence, then one can say that God will condone many people from the lake of fire because they provided employment to many yet found unrighteous in his sight by breaking His Commandments. Every sin is a sin and every law breaking will result in punishment. A person gets rich by foul means and give lots of alms to the poor and be a well known man in the world, but when he is caught for indulging in law breaking he will be punished according to the laws of the land. Recently in India Mr.Subratha Roy was arrested for not heeding the Supreme court's orders and no leniency was shown in spite of his company providing a lot of employment of many. The law is no respecter of person just as God is no respecter of Persons.

Corruption is condemn-able and needs to be punished. But 15 years imprisonment in a foreign land looks too harsh, that too for a a man who has given employment to so many people. Hope he will get some retrieve in the high court or whether the Indian government can do something to bring down the punishment. The government of Kerala should really work on it.

Whew! as of fact, Mohd Ali helped lot of Omanis here in Muscat! He was one of a person, whom can meet the Sultan without any appointment! He brought up the Oman to an Professional standard level and this is what he gets? I'm not praising him, but He should have shown those skills in India, so that at least few of the unemployment problems would have been Solved!

Those who is corrupt deserve the punishment, but in India it is otherwise.
    For example:
All highly corrupt sitting Ministers, MPs and
    MLAs.
All corrupt sitting bureaucrats, commissioners and chairmen.
All anti-social murderers, murder sponsors and the murder promoters like Modi. Please watch "Compelling evidence that proves Modi ordered the Gujarat genocide" where thousands of innocent women, children, aged and poor Muslims along with around 7% of the tally's innocent Hindus too were killed.
In the whole animal kingdom only we the human kill one another for no reason.

After reading several comments I was surprised. Everyone knows in this GCC and everywhere in the world, mostly you will not get any orders till you pay some amount to Buyers or Procurement department. It is very difficult to get the Purchase order without paying a small commission unless the material should be purely technical. If you see all the other businessmen also should be punished. It is bad luck of Mr. MOhammed Ali who get caught. Hope he will release soon.

    Ted,
Oman is not India, where the corrupt bureaucrats do any damn thing and go scot-free. Each country has its own rules and regulations and we, as guests in their country, have to follow and respect the law of their land. They have sentenced not only an Indian but also their own nationals and do you think they would do so if they were not found guilty? Just because he has done many good things, should he be exempted for his bad work? Why do we have laws? Are rich and influential persons above law? Because of this type of bribing a well deserved company must have lost the lucrative contract.
I feel very sorry for him and his family as all his hard-work and efforts he put during his tenure in that country were in futile.

Sad to know about the incident, but there should be a limit for greediness. Ultimately, now Mr. Ali had to pay the price for his over-greediness. I love Oman, its a beautiful country.

It does not look to be a fair sentence for a businessman who has contributed Oman in development projects and offering employment to many. He should have been properly fined and given a warning, since without him Company may be verge of closure. A jail term of 3 years would be appropriate with a fine.

You are right. But in Oman even the five Officials who took bribe were also jailed. Not only GIVER but even the TAKER is also punished in Oman.
So, if the same Rule applies to Ambani's Case, then 30% of our politicians of all the Parties and 50% of the bureaucrats would have been jailed in Oman, and the existing jails of Oman would have been insufficient to house thousands of such corrupt politicians and bureaucrats.

No problem if the existing jails of Oman do not have sufficient houses. What a co-incidence ... after all Galfar is a construction conglomerate and even with this P. Mohammad Ali can still secure more contracts behind the jail to build world class jails to house many more of his disciples and well wishers. The world is a bigger place in the Gulf after all.

The Prime Minister's office should get involved and bring an end to this drama.

What is the All Powerful Keralite Business Community in GCC doing ?

Oommen Chandy should be kicked out of GCC if he ever visits again for donations..

Mr. Mohammed Ali had devoted his entire life to various social causes in Oman and India. He is a very respected NRI awarded with the pravasi bharatiya award and the Oman "Civil Order Grade" for his contribution to the local economy.
