Ill treatment to John Dsouza : MIAL terminates Doctor, orders probe

Mumbai, Mar 12 (Mumbai Mirror / HT/DW): Two days after a diabetic passenger suffering a hypoglycaemic attack was wrongly labelled a drunk and thrown out of T2, airport authorities have made a U-turn claiming the on-duty doctor never said he was inebriated.

Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) wrote to the passenger's anguished family on Tuesday, blaming the airline he was due to fly with for failing to provide medical care, and for dumping him outside T2 after he had fainted.

But even as MIAL issued the clarification to the family of John Valentine D'Souza, 52, it terminated the on-duty doctor's services and also ordered an inquiry into the incident. It did not reveal the grounds for termination.

D'Souza, 52, was due to board a Kuwait Airways flight to the Gulf Arab country early on Sunday when he suffered a hypoglycaemic attack and collapsed inside Mumbai's new international terminal.

Officials assumed the Mira Road resident was drunk and dumped him atop his luggage outside the terminal. D'Souza lay unattended for two hours before his family finally arrived following a phone call from officials and gave him some sweets, which restored his blood sugar level.

No alcohol in blood report:

The blood report of Dsouza showed there were “no detectable” traces of alcohol in his blood.

Family members of John D’Souza, the stranded passenger, have been claiming he suffered from severe hypoglycaemia — a medical condition in which the blood sugar in the body drops, leading to impairment of function, but the airport and airline assumed he was drunk.

The report from Bhaktivedant Hospital’s pathology department said although 10-milligram per decilitre (mg/dl) alcohol was found in the blood sample; it was below alcohol levels that could lead to an abnormality in the body.

“We have been saying from the beginning that his condition is because he is diabetic, but neither the airline nor airport operator believed us,” said Angello Pinto, D’Souza’s brother-in-law.

The airport operator, on Tuesday, contradicted the original statement. The Mumbai airport’s customer services department said the airport doctor “did not label the passenger drunk”.

“The passenger had volunteered the information, said he was stressed and had consumed alcohol earlier,” the response sent to the D’Souzas read.

While MIAL apologised and said they have taken up the issue with Kuwait Airways, there was no response from Kuwait Airways until the time of going to press.

First of all there is NO Value for Human life in India for their own fellow citizens, BUT SLAVISH mentality still there in India that when foreign citizens comes to the airport all officers say HI.. HOW ARE YOU? to them as if they get a stomach ache if they don't do.

Mr. D'souza is still lucky, in airports all are in a rush , so no one bothers nobody,he at least got the family help. Since he is a Christian.. MAIL must have branded him alcoholic, even if he drink it not a crime. You can see BAR and Restaurant you won't find a single Christian who drink outside their own house.

This is a tragic situation and reveals indignity to fellow humans. Someone among the hundreds that must have seen this poor man and should have stopped and care like a good Samaritan.
This situation is not unique to Bombay. It happens in other airports also, including Vancouver Canada. A couple of years ago a Polish young immigrant who spoke no English or any other language except Polish was detained at the airport for several hours for questioning. His mother was waiting for him in the hallway. The man was very agitated for such long detention and became violent, roaming up and down in the empty hall when everyone had gone, and begana to hurl chairs. The police (RCMP) arrived, and 3 of them tried to subdue him and when he resisted two of them began to taser him to pin him down to the floor, and even after he was down and out they tasered until he was dead! The inquiry exonerated the police (no surprise in that) but found three of them lying under oath. One was exonerated the trial of the other two is still going on!
What cruelty one man (especially one in authority) can inflict on another! There is no value to human life in this world.

It was wrong from Mr.de souza to consume alcohol .with all stress if you drink alcohol as a diabetic Patient,it is like poison to Body.First goes blood sugar high, then fall down all of a sudden.may be that was the reason why he fell down and got hypoglycemia. One has to take care when has to travel as a diabetic.always carry Sweets or sugar tablets (Dextrose)with you for such Situation and take one immediately when you feel uneasiness.it never harms to take.but about the Airport officials ,I just have no words.Even every person around can also help if only wants.as we say,I am for myself, and God is for everybody method is hard.

This is indeed a horrible situation. It happens not just in Bombay, but in other parts of the world, including Canada. A couple of years ago when a Polish immigrant arrived at Vancouver he was disoriented and very agitated because he was made to wait for a long time in the secondary inspection. He did not speak or understand English. His mother was waiting for him in the waing area. When his behavior turned violent because of his agitation (he began to hurl chairs), three policemen - 3 not just one - subdued him, and two of them tasered him over and over again even after he fell, until he fell dead! Damage Control, when face is red with guilty act. This is what MIAL is doing right now.
As per the report when John's wife pleaded that he may be given a sweet to revive him, MIAL Staff was rude and non-cooperative. Now they blame the doctor. Even a Doctor's Report could have been manipulated. My feeling is that even if there was an animal like a Dog or a Cat found in the terminal area, people would have made a hue and cry. Here is a man who is lying without even being given a 01st aid. Do we really have any values for Human beings now.He was believed to be drunk, come on authorities, drunk or not drunk, why did someone from MIAL notice him and taken care. What if something serious happened to this passenger ?
What if John had to go and join duty failing which he would loose his job? Why have people become so in-sensitive to fellow citizens? When damage is already done, what will this probe do now?
Kuwait Airlines would call for him at the last moment when they realised that he has checked in and not reported to board, until then they would be busy at counters. so whom do we blame?

Eualalia, you are right the value of humans has degraded below animals. Ironical indeed, this incident also occurred at around the same time in Mumbai, am copy-pasting the news report from today's TOI epaper, Mumbai edition, page 9:

Owners return to claim missing dog

Mumbai: The owners of a Pomeranian, which was found roaming outside the airport’s arrival gate on Monday, have been traced. The owners, a couple, reside in Vile Parle.
“The husband had fought with his wife on Sunday evening and later in a fit of rage he kicked the dog,” said a police officer. After that, the pet found its way to the airport and was seen roaming around the 1-A arrival gate when flyers and CISF employees noticed it. Passersby chained the dog at a nearby pole. The dog was barking and seemed to be frightened. Hence, passersby brought it to the Airport police station around 2.30am on Monday.
When the owners started making enquires about their pet, they learnt that the police were taking care of the dog. “The couple has apologized,” said, senior inspector of the Airport police station.

It is a shame to know that MIA served with irresponsible doctor. He is a black spot for that profession. I can't imagine a scenario in which a diabetic patient is treated with such negligence. A common public aware of diabetic symptom can assess the reason. I wonder how come a doctor do such a conclusion of alcohol consumption. Even if anyone consumed alcohol...is he deserved such bad treatment?.. Shame on you doctor...

Reality came to surface. NO alcohol traced. Even though he was drunk, whether it is way to treat an unconscious human unattended for two hours? Mr. D'souza was lucky enough. IN the International Airport like Mumbai, there is not an simple glucometer? of an stethoscope to check the sugar level and heart beat? What type of duty doc this airport had? May be on-line degree holder. MIAL has taken the wise step by terminating the Doc, otherwise he might have labeled all sick inside Airport as "Drunk"
