'Hall of shame' : Bangalore cops to name drunk drivers on website

Bangalore, Mar 17 (DHNS): The website of the Bangalore City Traffic Police will soon have a virtual “hall of shame” that gives names and details of people booked for drunk driving.

The police have decided to implement a similar model followed by their Australian counterparts to curb the increasing number of drunk driving cases. “We will soon follow the Australian model to make road users stay away from liquor before driving,” Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic and Security) B Dayananda told Deccan Herald.

“The Australian police send the names and pictures of those involved in drunk driving cases to local newspapers. We will publish names and details of offenders on the website (www.bangaloretrafficpolice.gov.in) so that everybody would know them. We believe such a step would create some sort of fear among road users so that they will not dare repeat the offence,” he added.

He said the City has been seeing a rise in drunk driving cases despite special drives and frequent checks. “The liberal provisions of the Motor Vehicle Act are also partly responsible for it. The traffic police have studied legal provisions in different countries and recommended the government for stringent punishment,” he added.

According to a list prepared by the Bangalore Police, drunk driving in El Salvador is punishable with execution by firing squad, whereas second conviction for the offence leads to execution in Bulgaria. Poland has jail, fine and attending political lectures! Malaya jails the offender. If married, the spouse is also jailed.

Turkey takes the offender 10 miles out of town and makes them walk back under escort. South Africa has 10-year imprisonment or fine up to $10,000. In Norway, the offender is jailed for three weeks with hard labour, whereas loss of driving licence attracts one-year jail. Second offence ensures revoking of licence for life.

In India, a case is booked under Section 185 of the MV Act. It has a provision for imprisonment of up to six months or fine up to Rs 2,000 for the first offence. The second offence attracts imprisonment up to two years and fine up to Rs 3,000. Judiciary decides the quantum of punishment.

The Karnataka Police will have three benefits from this Law Enforcement:

    1) They can allow scot free a person after paying hefty sums of Money to the Police.

    2) If any remaining cartoons or half bottles inside the car or inside the Trucks, the police can confiscate and take to their home.

    3) Police drivers are out of this Law Enforcement.

Who has the time and what is the incentive for a common man to go through the list of those caught driving drunk? Also, there will be so many similar named people, and this could be another source for the corrupt minded "data entry clerks" to make a quick buck, punch some other name for an original name and pass it of as a typo error...hahaha...

Best idea, as being mulled by the Maharastra Govt., will be to give maximum 3 chances and beyond, just cancel the licence for a specified period along with heavy fines!!

Publishing names and photos of the people in the local paper for drink driving is not done in Australia. If it is a famous person then the media is interested in publishing the news. Usually we read in the papers of arrests for drink driving, but the names are not published.

When BJP was in power, law and order was perfect in IT City. 11 PM bar closing time was perfect time.

Look at the crime because of extending bar hours. Saturday midnight a lady was molested and assaulted by a BMTC bus driver. Can this useless HOME MINISTER justify his decision of extending bar hours?

    Dinesh,
when you are in Dairy business, its your interest to make people drink more milk! and if you have power of any type you can force people to drink milk.
    Whats wrong?

You also should reap evrything in 5 years because you will never be elected again.

Considering all the above facts, nothing is wrong with the minister!

Where are we heading towards... Our Govt is nothing more than a drama and we have to survive. Or else why this stupid act. I agree drunk and drive is punishable. But if the Govt is so strongly supporting it, why the hell they extended the closing times of Bar and Pubs ? Was that required. If that's required for Govt, then why are you stopping people coming back from the same bar and pubs. May be it's just to show that we are also caring for the society. Nothing more that.

What about traffic offenders by vehicle owners on Bangalore roads like Honking on Mondays, overtaking from the left end side, signal jumping, footpath riding, over speeding, and using black sun films on the glasses of their 4 wheelers? Does BTP publish the number plates of these traffic offenders with their names?

Liquor minister.. sorry Home Minister should order all bars to have hotels attached so that the customers can take room after 1.00am.
This facility reduces the amount of earnings in the department. the police can not ask money from drunken drivers as they are sleeping in hotels. So 50% of the hotel earnings should go to the home department.
