Udupi: Bunts’ association condemns caste discrimination ; demands apology

Udupi, Apr 21: The district Bunt’s Yane Nadavara Sangha organized a press meet on Monday April 21 at Sri Sayi Palace.
 
Kurkalu Dinakar Shetty, vice-president, Bunt’s Yane Nadavara Sangha, addressed the media and condemned the issue of Vanitha Shetty who had alleged that she was subjected to caste-based discrimination (Pankti Bheda) for having food at Udupi Sri Krishna Math, recently.



He strongly condemned it and said it was a matter of survival of the Hindu religion. “The Bunts have always supported the developmental work of Udupi Math but now they are discriminating against us all the time,” he said.

After the long controversial statements and discussion, he stated, “We are not going to question the rules and traditions of Udupi temple. We are just condemning the situation. If they agree to apologize, if they are promise to stop the repetitive attitude, if they bring reforms in such practices, we will drop the issue. If not, we will take a state-level protest against Pankti Bheda.”

He opined that if Udupi agrees to give up the Pankti Bheda system, automatically other temples are going to follow the same system; it may show equality among the public and devotees.

Uday Shetty, Dinesh Shetty, Shashi Shetty, Nityananda Shetty, Pratap Shetty, Vishwanath Shetty, Gopal Shetty, and Somanath Shetty were all present.

    Where was the Bunt’s Yane Nadavara Sangha when the Billavas artistes were not allowed perform in Mandarthi yakshagana mela ? where was the Bunt’s sangha when other non brahmins and dalits were discriminated?

    First of all you people divide the unity of nonbrahmins by discriminating many people. Bunts community itself disseminates its own community by social and economical status. Rich bunts call themselves as the forward class when many bunts are socially and economically backward. Why have you not fought for the reservation of poor Bunts? What is the contribution of RIch bunts to the poor bunts?

    This Udupi incident is more heinous than the Mandarti incident.

    Humanity has no religion or no caste.

    Be the human being first rather than the Brahmin, NOn Brahmin, Bunt, Billava, Mogaveer, hindu, muslim or christian.

    No caste or religion is superior or inferior in this world.

    We all share the same planet, breathe the same air, and drink the same water.

    One adopts the caste by his actions and not by the Birth.

    These types of incidents should be condemned by all the people.

    Being a bunt i know some of the bunts even today discriminate their on caste people on the basis of their social status and their financial status and other backward classes .This is a lesson for the bunt community to have a good understanding with other backward classes and stop acting like we are still living in the 15th century. If you as a upper class, give respect to other socially and economically poor people, you will also get the due respect from the other communities. But completely disagree with udupi temples action against any devotee inside the temple. I request swamiji’s to follow their talks on the stages in front of large crowds for publicity and to show the world that they are the saviors of Hindu dharma. Please can they walk the talk? They forgot the meaning of kanakana kindi? They want once again lord krisha to show the way, like he did when these same people discriminated KANAKA dasaru?

    Dear Mr Prabhu,
    As far as I know, the Pankthi for Brahmins and non Brahmins are separate in few Temples. Perhaps there might not have been much objection if the separate Pankthi is for the priests of the temple and others who come to the temple. People call priests to perform Puja on auspicious occasions and not all Brahmins. It is believed that the Priests have the knowledge contained in the sacred books. If tomorrow a Dalit gains enough knowledge to perform Puja, I would not mind if he Performs Puja in my Home. Personally, I am against the dynastic priesthood in many temples. It would have been in the interest of Hindu Society at large, If there are opportunities for those interested to learn the sacred books and the sacred practices to become priests irrespective of the caste he belongs to. your argument is very weak. Please don't swim against the tide. The movement against this crude practice will gather momentum in the coming years and the day is not far off when it is completely eradicated.

    'Panktibedha' what is practiced in the temples is nothing but the practice of untouchability, and even in this modern age there are people who support these kind of evil practices in the public forums are very hard to believe.. Yes, I agree with you that it is very difficult to remove these kind of evils from our society, but not impossible, We have done it in the past and we will definitely do it in the future.. The education is supposed to broaden our intellect, but here it is working in the reverse direction..feel so sorry about it...

    What you will do for panktibedha in Vidhaana saudha,Govt offices,banks,RTO,SRO offices,Bhootada kola,bus ticket booking systems,train ticket booking systems,cinema houses etc.,?

    Dear Sachianna,Now you have come to a point to agree that 'panktibedha' is ok and infilering in to the pankti by non brahmin may be by mistake or intentional.If it is intentional brahmins have all the right to vacate him/her gracefully but if it is genuine then only breahmins at fault if vacated by force during the course of lunch.It is unpardonable.Similar case happend even to a woman of CSB community also last year.I always prefer to have launch with all community members in the temples and otherwise feel isolated.In GSB temples we allow others too take anna prasada with us but generally archaks take a seperate line for luch in the same hall.Practice prevelent by and largely.Panktibedha what we call is not so easy to abolish as the present govt too with AHINDA back ground is unable to act on this issue.When they were in the opposition then they may shout against it.

    I think Mutt administration need to take steps to ban all the receipts/donations/any monetary & non-monetary befits from nonBrahmins. They can also take steps to ban nonbrahmin devotees inside the Krishna Temple. IF the same attitude continues in the Krishna temple udupi then definitely there will another strong kanakadasa will emerge or new Krishna temple will emerge to receive all the devotees of Krishna regardless of their caste. Hey Krishna give ಸದ್ಬುದ್ದಿ to administrators of Krishna Temple and prevent them from dividing society which they were doing since centuries. This is the root cause for all social evils introduced to our society.

    Adherents to creationist belief should also spell out why some people are born with deformity, why Earthquakes, why one living Creatures devours another living creatures for a living, etc. Religion may have given lot of good things to humans but at the same time has divided us through different practice's.

    O Aenna Prabhu…. Fully agreed with your view. Yes we need Brahmins everywhere because they are the right person to perform Pooja and special rituals since they know “Vedic” correctly. We don’t enter “Garbha Gudi” because we don’t want to make mess (Mailige) of it when we perform Pooja ourselves” but in our Hindu religion, we can’t get up in between or force someone to get up in between when we or they are having “Lunch or Dinner”. Even Government Law Enforcing Officer will wait till we finish our Lunch or Dinner before they serve notice or arrest them. Absolutely no problem to arrange separate “Pankthi” for Brahmins but by mistake someone having lunch with them can’t force to get up. Which we will not do for sure and I will not allow if it is happening in front of me too

    As we are progressing towards the ultra new era, our thinking is getting narrower day by day. We are just thinking of our religion, our caste, our family,..etc which is taking away our humanity.
    Even a criminal looks dear, when he belongs to our religion or our caste & people jump out to support him!
    I am just wondering where this world is heading to.
