Mangalore, Jun 26: Heavy rains over the last couple of days have once again resulted in sea erosion at Ullal and surrounding areas.  While 3 more houses have been damaged, a twelve-year-old boy Sharukh has even sustained injuries in the aftermath of sea erosion in the Ullal region near here on Sunday June 25.

Despite several appeals and protests by the locals in the last few years, it seems that the politicians and other concerned persons have turned a deaf ear to the problem.  The raging sea has engulfed several metres of land and a number of houses in the past.  Every monsoon season is like a nightmare to the people living on the shores at Kotekar, Beeri, Ullal etc owing to sea erosion.

But the continued apathy of the concerned authorities and officials is more dangerous than the rage of the nature.  Everytime erosion is reported, either the MLA or some other officials visit the place, click some snaps facing the sea and ensure a media splash. Once they leave the place, however, they remember it only the following year.

It was only a few days ago that chief minister H D Kumaraswamy had visited the place and promised several measures.  But as usual all his promises have remained in the files and papers.  Sea erosion is at its worst these days.  Though some heavy stones are laid along the shore, they are of little use in the face the fury of the sea.
