11-month-old sent on solo parasailing: Case against parents, organisers

Kannur (Kerala), May 22 (PTI): Parents of the 11-month-old baby girl, who was sent on a solo parasailing trip to a height of about 40 feet at a beach here, have landed in trouble along with the the organisers as police registered a case against them under the Juvenile Justice Act.

Police registered a case under Section 23 of Juvenile Justice Act against them, as per which they can be punished with imprisonment for six months or a fine or both.

Kannur Superintendent of Police P N Unniraja told PTI that the statements of the parents and the organisers would be taken today.

The incident evoked sharp reactions state-wide with Kerala Human Rights Commission registering a suo motu case against them.

DIG Sreejith, Chief Investigation Officer of the Commission, said the statements of parents and organisers had been taken.

He said the child's mother has 60 hours of flying experience and wanted to rear her toddler for the same without giving a thought to the fact that she was too small.

"What is alarming is that there are no norms and guidelines fixed for such adventure sports," he said.

K E Gangadharan, Member of the Commission, said efforts should be made to ensure such incidents do not recur.

The organisers -- Malabar Adventure Sports Society -- claim they train cadets of NCC and Nehru Yuvak Kendra and come under the umbrella of the National Adventure Foundation.

The child, Niya Nizam, was forced to sail solo by her parents, clinging onto an open parachute at Muzhipillangadi beach here yesterday. She was seen crying before and after the event by the horrified spectators.

Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights said the incident was violative of the Child Rights Convention and action could be taken against the parents under JJ Act.

On May 3, Kannur Collector P Balakiran was injured when his paraglider developed a snag at a height of 25 feet and he fell down.

I regret to state that the parents of the eleven month old child have acted most irresponsibly. Fortunately nothing has gone wrong and that the child is safe.

Instead of punishing the parents it is expedient that the organizers of this sport should be questioned and norms and rules be framed for the safety of the people.

They need to learn parental tender love, affection & emotions towards ones off spring from some animals at least.

Your own baby is not a toy to handle like that.

Court shall entrust the custody of their children with sensible relatives (like Norwegian court verdict Indian child's case)as a deterrent for any other fools.
The organisers Malabar misadventure Sports Society too has a share their irresponsibility.
They should be sent behind bars to do some adventure along with parents.

What kind of adventure is this?, As a parent of 3year old, we never let our child alone even in the washroom. How can they be such irresponsible?. Even with parent or companion this could result in disaster, thank god nothing happened. May be she wants to get some extra likes on her Facebook picture and make a record, stupidity at its best.

I saw the Video. It's absolutely horrifying. I don't know how parents who gave birth to that child can ever think of making it go through such a painful ride. The child was crying like anything while landed. Jail term is not preferable here in the view of child's take caring. But a harsh and sever fine should be imposed to them with a strict warning. Very irresponsible and heartless parents I can say.
