Mangalore, Aug 9: In a very sad turn of event, an infant died owing to alleged negligence by the staff and doctors of a government hospital in the city on Wednesday August 9 morning.

A child born one of the hospitals in Chikamagalur district had some respiratory problems.  So the child was immediately brought to Lady Goshen Hospital here on Tuesday evening.  Though the child was brought around 6 pm, it was not admitted to the hospital even till 8 in the night.

Thereafter, the concerned persons said that the hospital has only two incubators out of which one is being used for another child while the other is spoiled.  This delay cost dearly.  Finally the child was taken to a private hospital.  But it was too late and the child breathed its last on Wednesday morning.

Meanwhile news in this regard was given to Suratkal MLA Krishna Palemar.  He immediately called the hospital over the phone.  But the duty doctor was not present at that time and the staff who answered the call is said to have not given proper answer.  Enraged by this, Palemar came to the hospital directly.  The duty doctor Sundari was not in the hospital when he arrived.  He immediately visited different departments in the hospital and found a lot of irregularities.

Annoyed by these irregularities he took the hospital staff to task who in turn said that adequate number of staff have not been appointed owing to which the existing staff have to shoulder extra burden.

The MLA also complained about lack of cleanliness in the hospital.  Interestingly the responsibility of hospital cleanliness has been given to a private firm.
