Bagalkot: Rescue bid to pull out 6-year-old on, father says stop operation

Bagalkot, Aug 5 (PTI): Rescue efforts were on for the third day today to pull out a six-year-old boy trapped in an abandoned borewell at a farm in nearby Sulikeri village, even as his father pleaded for stopping the operation, fearing the worst for his son.

District officials said 70-75 ft trench has been dug so far to gain access to Thimmanna Hatti, who is trapped at a depth of 160 feet in the 300-ft borewell.

Vacuum pump has been brought from Bagalkot Municipal Corporation to clear the mud covering the boy, officials said.

The boy's distraught father Hanumantha Hatti sought stopping the rescue operations to dig a parallel, pit-cum-tunnel in L shape, saying he is almost certain his son is no more.

"I won't get back my son alive after all this that is being done. I should at least save my land for the future of my two daughters," he told reporters, as nearly three lakh cubic metres of mud had been dug covering good part of the farm, which has also been thronged by hundreds of people.

"To get this pit closed, I may have to again go for huge loan. With great difficulty I have come to this decision. Let this work be stopped," he said.

District in-charge Minister S R Patil, who is overseeing the operation, said, "the father is in great pain, He is saying all this may be in emotional mood of not being able to save his son and also seeing his land being dug up."

But, he said, the government "cannot take decision like that. We have a job to do and that is to bring back the boy, for now the rescue operations will continue."

A robotic equipment team lead by Manikanthan from Madurai is being roped in to help in rescue operation, officials said. A similar attempt using robot to pull out the boy failed yesterday.

Thimmanna fell into the borewell in his father's sugarcane field while he was with his cousin on Sunday.

"Prevention is always better then the cure"!!, even after such repeated incidents from past few years no action has been taken to prevent further tragedies, It is easy to sit somewhere and comment that we are not suitably equipped no country in the world will be equipped for such incidents! this is a humongous task of digging to a depth of 300 ft and basically no one knows what they will encounter while digging and there could major disaster where many others could lose their lives!!

The Government should consider a separate Engineering course, who will be an expert in Bore well rescue operation as we are seeing more & more cases recently..
Some poor greedy parents may consider pushing their child into abandoned bore well holes if the compensation amount is attractive..!

I shall first pray to god that let the small angel come back, People should take their own inatitive to close the borewells after the work is done, Govt should help the farmers family because farmers are the backborn for us. Please close all the borwells so that we can save as many as kids, from now onwards, Govt should also take precautions for this before what can be done immediately rather than delaying like this. Oh god please save the child.

Sorry to say but father dug his own son's grave. Why the hell he did not fence it at least when he was well aware of the danger.

What does it take to close the abandoned bore well pit...???
Excavate 1 meter deep to a size of 2 metre x 2 metre...
Cast a slab on a plywood base of same size with nominal reinforcement of 10 mm steel at 100 mm x 100 mm...
After curing the slab for 7 days cover till normal soil level and forget it...
Cost is negligible but result is every night's sleep...

Sad to know that we are not equipped to tackle these type tragedies I feel the way the digging work was carried is not up to the mark .. in 3 days they can dig only 75 ft where as the bore-well is apprx. 300 ft depth.. Where is the calculation and strategy plan? The excavators does the work as if they are digging a tunnel!. I am not sure.. but could have used fast drilling techniques

The boy's father does not have humanity it seems, because he has worried about the situation of his own land rather than to pull out his own son's body. What type of person he is, in such case entire cost is to be put on his account. If boy's father would have taken care previously to close the hole, such incident would it be happened?

what a pathetic situation of the father, he is caught up between the devil and the deep sea. The government should promise him that they would help him to meet the expenses of the land to be filled up after the operation.

Govt should be give more and more compensation to this poor family, instead of paying unnecessary Crores rupees to Ambarish Singapore health treatment.
