'Don't let success go to your head': Sena cautions BJP after by-poll losses

Mumbai, Sep 17 (NDTV): As BJP President Amit Shah lands in Mumbai to gather senior leaders in his party into a strategy session for the Maharashtra elections next month, ally Shiv Sena has used an editorial in its magazine the Saamna, to caution the BJP against taking "voters for granted."

Analysing the BJP's losses in crucial by-elections yesterday, the Sena editorial has praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and says he should not be blamed for his party's performance - it was trounced by the Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh and has allowed the Congress to make inroads in Gujarat and Rajasthan.

"The by-election results are a lesson for the Maharashtra elections," the Saamna said, adding, "Don't let success go to your head, keep your feet on the ground."

The sub-text of that warning is that while Mr Modi undoubtedly scripted the BJP-led NDA's spectacular victory in national elections just four months ago, the BJP cannot count on what it calls the "Modi wave" to win the Maharashtra elections next month. "Each election comes with its tides and tides change after every election. Vidhan Sabha elections cannot be fought on the basis of the Lok Sabha wave," the editorial said.

The Sena and the BJP, allies for 25 years, are engaged in a tussle over seat-sharing. The BJP argues that its superior performance in the national elections has earned it the right to an equal number of seats to contest. The Sena insists that it must continue to be the senior partner in the state and contest more seats.

Negotiations are at a standstill after Shiv Sena chief Udhav Thackeray seemed to question whether there is a "Modi wave." Sena sources said the by-election results vindicate his remarks.

The setback has sent the BJP into a huddle. Senior leaders met at Union Minister Nitin Gadkari's residence in the capital on Tuesday and Mr Gadkari is also expected to be present at Amit Shah's meeting in Mumbai today.

Mr Shah is expected to discuss with state leaders how to take seat-sharing talks forward with the Sena. The stakes are high as the party with the most legislators will have the bigger claim to the Chief Minister's post if the alliance wins.

In Maharastra there is peace and prosperity under Congress-Ncp rule. The developments are genuine and not fake developments which we see in Gujrath. Seee the bridges, Mono rails, Industry, rail network, money transactions, roadways, airports. Its a headquarters for all major industries. How many jobs it has given to people. Who did all this. None other than Congress. People with little common sense will vote for Congress and fake people will vote for BJP.

Apart from Mumbai and some parts of Maharashtra where they have strong support the Shiv Sena is unsure of winning or capturing more seats than the BJP in Maharastra this time around. Inspite of yesterday's setback in the bypolls the truth is that the BJP are riding on the success of the LS polls and are confident of extending this success to the Assembly polls too (i.e. if the Congress-NCP combine do not make an impact in Maharashtra).
The Shiv Sena are scared of this as they will be relegated to being the junior partner which is not acceptable to them as outside Maharashtra the Shiv Sena is a 'nobody' so they are desperate to be the senior partner in Maharastra as it is a prestige issue for them.
It seems that the Shiv Sena are trying to scare the BJP with this statement.
The Shiv Sena need to realize that their days of being the senior partner in the alliance may be numbered as the BJP may get more seats than them (even if they do not win Maharashtra). Also there is the MNS-Raj Thackeray factor at play against the SS.
I am neither a BJP nor a Shiv Sena supporter.

Success has already gone into the head of BJP's head. That is why they have forced the Hero Motocorp to shift their proposed Unit from Dharwad in Karnataka to Chitoor in Andhra to please Naidu. This unit would have given jobs to atleast 15000 people of north Karnataka if it was set up in Dharwad.
NDA has always worked against the interest of Kannadigas and pampered Andhraites even during their rule from 1999 to 2004.

Even to please Maharashtra people during the October Assembly election the NDA at the Center has allowed Supreme Court to set up Justice Sarin committee to study the Belagavi Border problem even though such problems do not come under the purview of Supreme court. Actually Modi govt should have challenged the decision of Supreme court in SC itself by pointing out that the border problem is beyond the purview of Supreme court. But Modi govt has intentionally not done so as it would have annoyed Marathi Voters. Which means at the cost of Karnataka NDA has pleased Maharashtra just like they pleased Naidu of Andhra.
