Mangalore, Oct 8: Hundreds of employees of Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilizers (MCF) on Tuesday, October 7 organized a protest under the banner of MCF Mangala Workers' Union against the union government’s decision on discontinuing subsidies to naphtha-based fertilizer manufacturing units.

The protest began with a march from Tagore Park to the DC’s office here.

Addressing the protesters, K N Suryanarayana, president of MCF Mangala Workers' Union said, "Due to the present policy of the government, the company is losing Rs 5crore each day. The government should restore the naphtha-based system till it provides the natural gas connection to MCF to produce urea, and continue the subsidy. If the government is adamant on its stand, it would tamper the livelihood of about 2,000 families.

He also said that MCF had already spent Rs 350 crore to set up technology for supply of natural gas. Hence, it is the responsibility of government to provide connectivity, he added.

After the protest, a memorandum was submitted to the DC.

It's the same reason that the MAQ ( Managlore Division) of that the Railways still comes under the jurisdiction of Kerala.
Despite having number of Railway Ministers in the past and also present,we have to be under the pressure of Kerala for so many essentials to the development of our District which actually contributes a lot to the Railways in terms of revenue. Even for requirements of wagons for the Ports and other units at MAQ(Mangalore) one has to run like a beggar to Kerala .

We hope that the Central Government will take a special decision to subsidize Naptha based Urea Plants like MCF, SPIC , MFL and others atleast for a year. This will help MCF and others to plan realistically. Absence of Urea supply will drastically affect our farmers who will have to pay more and also depend on other States to supply the shortfall. Another aspect is that MCF indirectly feeds many ancillary industries in Bykampadi and the shutdown will affect these small industries and thousands of families.

We can call all the person's commented here as FOOLS. What Mallaya has to do here. As any one is aware what happened to the gas line from Kochi has not reached Mangalore. It is our MP Nalini Kumar has to answer . These Mallus do not want the line to reach more & that is the reason MCF has to suffer. Can our elected representatives of DK do something.

Any industrial plant is designed for a maximum life span in the range of 20 to 25 years, since it has been seen to be techo-economically feasible for this span. Beyond this life span the plant turns out to have frequent maintenance issues and results in heavy losses due to shut downs

This plant was set up in the year 1978 and majority of the plant is quite obsolete and inefficient to add to this the current Natural Gas production scenario is extremely bad.

Its more technical than Mr. Mallyas politics or Local Politics for that matter. Its quite clear that most of the people commenting on this portal lack complete information.

Agriculture in Karnataka contributes 25% to the state GDP with over 60% of the population engaged in it and 12.31 million hectares of land under cultivation. Closing of the MCF without providing the Gas supply required is nothing but taking away the jobs of the Mangaloreans. When Congress was in center they made a correct decision by extending the subsidy until gas connection is provided by the state owned companies. BJP which boasts that it is treating all states equal is showing a step motherly treatment to Karnataka. The center govt headed by PM is to to be blamed for this entire mess and poor people of Man galore will have to pay the price.

Achche Din Ayenge? Rozgaar milega? Yahan to bure din hain, aur rozgaar bhi cheena gaya.
Government should roll back the decision until MCF get natural gas supply. Just talking big is not enough. Be practical.
