Puttur: Hassan-BC Road stretch to be upgraded, widened at Rs 1,600 crore

Daijiworld Media Network - Puttur (DV)

Puttur, Oct 9: "The work on upgrading and four-laning the Hassan to BC Road stretch will commence in 2016. The project cost is estimated at Rs 1604.73 crore, spread over 297.743 hectares from Hassan to BC Road. This project will cover six taluks from Hassan and Dakshina Kannada districts," said Manjunath, special land acquisition officer.

He was speaking at an environmental public hearing organized by the National Highways Authority of India and Karnataka State Pollution Control Board at Government Primary School, Shirady on Thursday, October 9.

"The plan is to construct four-lane road from Hassan to BC road stretching a distance of 133.860 km. It is proposed to construct three bypasses, realignment in 169 locations, three flyovers, three vehicle underpasses, three pedestrian underpasses, and four elephant underpasses in appropriate elephant corridors. There will also be one foot overbridge, two service roads, five major bridges, tow toll plazas at Aloor and Melkar, 47 bus bays with bus shelters. One foot overbridge is proposed to be constructed at Mani. The project will divert 71.678 hectare forest area from Karnataka. Negative impacts on environment will be mitigated through the environmental management plan," he explained.

Puttur taluk panchayat president Pulasya Rai said, "There are no adequate sanitation facilities in Gundiya and Shirady. NHAI should also provide sanitation facilities in bus shelters and bus bays.

Activist Kishore Shirady said, "Compensation should be provided to people who run shops even without licence. Land acquisition may create problem for students who reside along the stretch as it would hamper their studies, hence appropriate arrangements should be made for them."

Shirish Gangadhar, technical manager of NHAI said, "Compensation list has been already prepared. Those running shops without licence will also be considered for compensation."

Answering a question by K K Sebastian, member of gram panchayat, the officers also assured that demolished water resources like tanks and bore wells would be reconstructed.

George, retired military serviceman said that he had spent his savings from 36 years of service for his land and expressed fears and grief that he would lose his house. There were no comments from officials on it.

Road widening should be done with minimum cutting of trees.
Replantation should be done in coming rainy season.

Urge the media to take up the cause of NH 66 former 17. Absolute lack of concern by the authorities and the elected leaders.

After the last few years of Cong-I led UPA and state Govt announcements amounting to 400 crores, 600 crores and 2000 cores, apparently for various upgrading or repair projects of exactly the same stretch of road, we now have this ‘announcement’ of a 1,600 crore project!
People like Manjunath and Shirish Gangadhar are mere tools on behalf of the well-entrenched highway repair contractors, to take of the PR while the real crooks who pocket the tax payers (and innocent toll payer’s) hard earned money, conveniently escape! In fact the real beneficiaries of such mega announcements can’t even ensure a reliable transport between Mangalore and Bangalore, either on road or rail.
Incidentally, the last central Govt had a highly, corrupt cabinet minister from South Kanara (now a billionaire immune from prosecution thanks to his closeness to a Madam) in charge of national highways while we now have another powerful cabinet minister in charge of railways!
All these greedy, shameless politicians (who consider themselves clean and wear all white down to their socks) have an extraordinary dedication to immensely profit swiftly and boost their own fortunes, sadly without an iota of concern to their own, helpless poor people.
Despite God’s punishment in various forms from diabetes to kidney problems to son’s infidelity to cancer within family, none of these canny, thick skinned, so-called God fearing politicians ever get wise or do an iota of good to society.

Any 'Sathya Harishchandra' will do the same thing in Karnataka if one gts a chance. Here the issue is not making money in illegal way but chance of getting an oppertunity to loot. Here there is no politics... all are students of the same school......
Notable point is only Karnataka has worst situation about bad roads unlike sttes Tamilnadu,Kerala........
No solution for this in near future....inspite, vehicle owners pay highest rate of vehicle tax...
TAX LIFE TIME AND ROAD ALL THE TIME AND REIAR TIME TO TIME..POLITICIANS POCKET FILLING ALSO ALL THE TIME....
Hat off to commuters for remaining so tollerent!!!

I hope our lethargic elected representatives irrespective parties and legislature central or state will be able to atleast complete this on time. See the state of the NH 66(17) work progress from Kundapur to Kasargod its a mess , no work at all in progresss for 100 kms, work stalled incomplete service roads, incomplete bridges cosntruction equipment helter skelter . All this has created vehicular chaos. One blames this construction company and that.. but goverments changed no work in progress . The local Mangaloreans have not been bothered seem to feel its none of their concern. Hope this projects doesnt create a nightmare for everyone along the road and create permanent bottleneck since the government road construction is a night mare. We can construct a 40 floor building in 3 years cannot complete a simple km stretch of road.

The state of former NH 47 ( Blr-Mlr ) highway is in a way microcosm of India. It connects Karnataka's wealthy capital with Karnataka's largest port city. Such is the strategic importance of the highway that even considering closing it for an hour should have been unthinkable. But no.,our successive state governments of 3 different parties let such an important highway deteriorate that it remains shut 6 months in an year! People have sown plants in potholes to show the level of neglect . The amount of revenue loss due to highway being closed and deaths due to accidents is a sad reminder how we have accepted our fate.

what we need for Karnataka is a party that is purely Kannadiga. It should not be linked to any party at the central level. We need to fight for what we need. One of the most educated state with a great potential has only ended up as a manpower supply for the world.
