Mangalore: College accused of collecting hefty fine for 'attendance shortage'

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore

Mangalore, Oct 16: Chaos erupted at Srinivas College, Pandeshwar here on Wednesday October 15 after students of BBM alleged that the college management was collecting exorbitant fines, much more than the stipulated amount, for attendance shortage.

The Mangalore university semester examinations are scheduled to begin from Thursday October 16, but nearly a hundred students who have attendance shortage have not been given hall tickets, it is said. Though the fine for attendance shortage under university guidelines is Rs 900 per subject, the college administration was allegedly collecting Rs 20,000 to Rs 70,000 from each student.

The college warned that those who do not pay the above amount would be denied hall tickets, the students alleged.

Meanwhile, some of the students even alleged that when they checked at Mangalore University, their attendance records showed no shortage, but the college was collecting fines insisting that they were lacking in attendance. "The college administration is looting us in the name of attendance shortage," alleged one of the students.

"Some of the students have already paid the fine and have been given receipts terming the amount as 'additional class fee'. The principal says that the fee has been calculated as Rs 700 per hour of class taken. But so far, no additional classes have been taken for any subject. The college cannot demand such a big amount as fine for attendance shortage as per university rules, hence it is terming it as 'additional class fee'," claimed the students.

It is said that a few of the students had already paid the fine and received their hall tickets, but those who could not afford to pay protested against the college administration on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, principal of Srinivas Institute of Management Studies, Dr P S Aithal, clarified that the college had not demanded any fine for allowing students to answer the exams. "Out of concern for students, we conducted additional classes so that they can sit for the exams, that's all," he said.

When asked if the additional classes had the university's approval, Dr Aithal said it was the college's internal matter.

The students, however, stuck to their allegations that the college had flouted rules to 'loot' them. It was later learnt through sources that having no choice with exams about to begin, the students paid the fine and got their hall tickets.

This isn't something new! This has been happening since about 5 years ago when I was there too.(I bet since it started) Not just here but even in the other sister colleges under this administration.
This is going to go further, and those students who complained might have to face the heat for their act.Happened when we protested.
I believe its a commonplace in the other new colleges in and around the city, because my friends from other colleges back then used to say the same.
And after all the money they take, check out the facilities they provide.Just a building to call it a college, and within a short span of 3-5 years they have a set of such buildings to call it a university .I wonder if this business is ever going to stop. Big doubts on that one!

Attendance shortage fine must be paid in the university not in the college, but most of the private colleges collecting the attendance shortage penalty from the college itself, they will not forward this amount to university, but they will balance the shortage of attendance and send to the university.

Even a lay man can understand that collection of such an exorbitant fines ranging from Rs 20-70 thousand by the college administration in the pretext of shortage of attendance just to get a hall ticket as stated by the students is an inhumane and illegal practice.
On the other hand I also blame the students for not adhering to the college norms and now creating a scene.
Besides unlike in the past, where education institutions were being treated as God's temples, nowadays almost all the education institutions have become a den for looting/minting money from the students in the pretext of so many things, which they are not supposed to do so.
Once in the past all the educational institution, wherein students futures/fate were being shaped with so much dedication, determination by the teachers and had a good respect and recognition was there for the noble teaching profession. But now it has become adulterated with so many corrupt things and become commercial.Very sad.
As the technology, conveniences, society, opportunities are being advancing human values are being degrading due to their greed. The trend has been completely changed now.

I do not think that such nuisance happens in St. Aloysius College.

I remember (Govt. College late 60's) some times many students (including me) used to be allowed to leave (Kannada lecture) with the permission of the Lecturer (after the attendance).

Now I realize that what we were doing was not right (including the Lecturer)

according to me, this system of paying for attendance id ridiculous. unless one attends college in a full time course, why should they write exam? let them write after 6 months or 1 year. for readers info, this system is there in BE, MBBS also so many doctors are also passing without attending medical colleges. huge profit for managements. education and real estate are the most profitable businesses these days.

CAUTION: A particular college group affiliated to RGUHS in Mangalore. Their modus operandi is forge the signatures of teachers and do impersonation by showing them as staff or examiner. They employ lot of teachers and once the employment letter is signed for a bond for 3 years they kick them immediately without notice with not a single salary paid. They actually need only 10 teachers to work, rest 20 as university requirement purpose. If proper audit or inspection is carried out, these innocent staff who are blackmailed can be set free.

Is the college imparting this additional knowledge viz., be opportunistic and cash in on your customer's weakness to make money, to the would be business managers?
No offense but this is day light robbery by the college administration.
By the way, why are so many students having attendance shortage? Do their parents know this? Let alone fine, the students should not be allowed to take exam when they have this pathetic attitude towards the education imparted in the classroom.

Students must know what is the rules and regulation of the individual college before joining.
what is minimum attendance required to get admission for the get hall ticket, these much sense any student must have.not the end of hall ticket issue time.
collecting heavy fine from students must conduct a university level enquiy and if found wrong then appropriate action must initiated against college and principal.

I was the student in same college. Though I had returned all the books in the library and it was there in the registers that all books were returned, I had to pay Rs.200 fine for not showing the library card when collecting the hall ticket.

    Another way of making money.

Why Fine collection in terms of Money only everywhere? It looks like making business out of it! There are many other non-violent, non-business, non-corrupt, effective ways to make them not to miss classes, like Issuing warnings to them/their parents, Not allowing them to sit for the exams, if the number of missed classes exceeds certain limit. Giving impositions(making them to write the whole chapter/subject/exercises 5/10/100 times) in order to get the hall ticket for the exams, etc. Ultimately, one shouldn't forget the purpose behind putting fine for the missed classes, and surely it is not a business!

    Well done by college management.
Why I am saying means, I am residing in Subas Nagar where this college is located. Most of the students hailing from Kerala are not attending the class, instead sitting in the small petty shops, hotels and smoking and not attending the classes. Strict action is required.

During our college time Mr. Aithal always use to tell us "En-cash the opportunity".... He is more a businessman than teacher. But still I feel Rs 900 fine for attendance shortage is too less...... Just imagine 100 students having attendance shortage and university charging only Rs 900...?? How can a principal control students ?? Its 100 percent students fault who gave an opportunity to Mr. Aithal !!

No doubt those students who protested will harassed in way or other. The college administration and faculties will be having contact with the examiners, who will be asked to fail the students or give very less marks to them. This is very common pay back by some college administration or some lecturers who take revenge against the students for protesting their illegal activities. My cousin and his friends in nursing college in Mangalore were given very less marks in practical exams and failed repeatedly for protesting against the management. Hope government look at these matters take some measures to avoid such revenge actions from management. This is not only important for students future but also for their family and society as some of the failed student may get depressed and engage in illegal activities themselves to pay back the management. This will go on continuing if further good measures are not taken by the concerned government.

University rules that say pay Rs 900 and appear for the exams is a crazy rule....Encouraging students to bunk classes and get away with a fine for shortage of attendance...There should be a cut off limit by the University where the college must not allow the students to appear for those subjects were they have too much off attendance shortage say 30 % and more...and also the students now are taking advantage of the PRESS to highlight the same so that the management may give in to their demands..Internal College matters of this kind must be resolved without the press interference unless they have proof for the same ..Sure the students are at fault for not attending classes..

Why collecting fine? Don't allow them sit for exam than only they will understand the value of education. This just like man is ridding motor cycle without helmet and policemen will leave him with Rs 100 bribe?? These students are leaving house to go to college and roaming on the street doing mischief ????

What the article is missing is why those 100 odd students are having attendance shortage. If they attended the classes regularly without bunking, then this situation would not arise. As a student, the expectation is to attend classes and not bunk, and then create a scene. Genuine one off cases with health issues or family issues should be dealt separately, but 100 students attendance shortage is too much.
