Golfer Kiran triumphs in maiden appearance


Kolkata, Jan 30 (IANS): Kiran Matharu played a cautious round in tricky conditions to emerge victorious at the Hero-RCGC Women’s Pro Golf Championship.

The Rs.5 lakh event, which culminated Friday, saw Indian origin English player Kiran walk away with the winner's cheque, carding a total of 221 at the end of the third and final round.

Trailing Kiran by two strokes was Delhi's Vani Kapoor, who had an indifferent day. Local girl Neha Tripathi finished third with a total score of 224 after 54 holes.

Kiran teed off to a cautious start but faltered and carded bogies on the seventh and eighth holes in her front nine. She carded two birdies on the 14th and 16th along with three bogies on the 10th, 17th and 18th in her back nine to finish the day with a score of 3 over 75.

Overnight leader Vani had a forgettable day as she finished the round with a score of 6 over 78 to take second. Her error marred day included two birdies on the second and 12th with four bogies on the third, fifth, seventh and ninth. She also carded two double bogies on the eighth and 13th to finish with a total score of 223.

Kolkata's Neha Tripathi played a controlled round to take third position with 3 over 75. She carded two birdies on the third and 14th with three bogies on the sixth, ninth and 13th. Her lone double bogie came on the seventh.

She finished ahead of Panchkula’s Amandeep Drall, who ended fourth with a total score of 225. Amandeep carded one birdie on the 12th with five bogies on the fifth, seventh, 13th, 14th and 17th. Her day ended with 4 over 76.

Sharmila Nicollet and Delhi’s Gauri Monga finished tied fifth with identical scores of 228. Gauri carded the best score of the day, 2 over 74, with a birdie on the 15th and three bogies on the fifth, seventh and 12t.

Bengaluru's Sharmila Nicollet played a birdie-less round of 5 over 77 which included five bogies on the first, second, fifth, seventh and 17th. Delhi’s Ankita Tiwana, Chandigarh’s Saaniya Sharma and Pune's Shweta Galande finished seventh, eighth and ninth, respectively.

The tour now moves to Tollygunge Club here for the fourth leg which will be played from Feb 4-6.
