Bengaluru: Group of 9, which tried to enter Syria, let off with warning

Bengaluru, Feb 2 (DHNS): The nine people, including seven of a family, whom the Bengaluru police had detained at the Kempegowda International Airport on Friday following their suspected attempt to enter the Islamic State-controlled Syria, have been let off with a stern warning.

The Central Crime Branch (CCB) let them off as it could not recover anything incriminating from them nor was there any evidence against them. Hence, the CCB police decided not to register any case against them but not before giving them a stern warning against making any such attempt in the future.

The nine—Muhammed Abdul Ahad, 46, his wife and five children, all from Chennai, Javeed Baba, 24, a native of Khammam district in Telangana, and Ibrahim Nowfal, 24, from Hassan, were detained at the airport as soon as they landed from Istanbul, Turkey.

The police had received the tip-off came from Central agencies and Turkish authorities. The group had flown out of Bengaluru to Istanbul on tourist visas on December 24, 2014, but was sent to India by Turkish authorities on Jan 30, 2015.

“We couldn’t get any credible information from them about their links with IS activists or with any other terrorist group. They were just sympathetic to the happenings in the regions controlled by IS,” a senior office, who interrogated them, told Deccan Herald.

During their interrogation, the group admitted it had plans to enter Syria and other areas controlled by the IS “for a social cause”.

When interrogators probed them, they said they had planned to engage in social activities. They claimed they were moved by the plight of thousands of innocent citizens there, especially children and women, and wanted to lend a helping hand, the police quoted them as saying.

The police admitted they didn’t get a convincing explanation as to why Ahad tried to take his wife and children along to the violence-hit region. They are yet to fathom how Ahad got in touch with Baba and Nowfal.

Ahad, Baba and Nowfal were working for well-known companies in Bengaluru. While Ahad was earning almost Rs two lakh a month, Baba and Nowfal, both highly talented engineers, had recently joined the profession. It is unclear what made Ahad and two others to resign and try to relocate to Syria, the police said.

During the interrogation, Ahad appeared highly radicalised whereas Baba and Nowfal are on the verge of radicalisation. The police summoned the parents and family members of all the three and spoke to them.

Police Commissioner M N Reddi and his colleagues detailed them about the consequences if they had landed in Syria. The police top brass urged them to guide the three to give up any plans of working for the IS. The police also explained legal problems and career prospects. They asked them to get the three men counselled by expert psychologists.

It is unclear if Ahad had made any attempts to radicalise other young men. The police and Central agencies will keep the three under surveillance.

Why to Syria? Some Muslim even don’t know what is IS ? People should know that Islam recommend and what not? What sort of good work from IS? Is this Jihad? Islam never recommends killing an innocent whatever the religion he belongs.

Sir, we have such a big population problem here. It is hard to even drive a two wheeler or cycle on the roads now a days. Under these circumstances if our system has been successful in brain washing 9 of highly educated individuals and exporting them to another country why have you let them off. We have enormous sea resources at hand in Mangalore. Please board them and all those like them and export them with one way passport. Imagine how much space and resources will be left for us and our next generation.

Biggest idiots....why they want to go to syria and join petroleum jihad.....Govt need to have a strict vigilance on anti ethical forces...no matter which religion they belong....
If they real believes in Jihad...look at your own community how better are they faring...bottom of social ladder doing all those menial jobs coz lack of education,poverty...For a Indian muslim Jihad means getting fellow educated and raise them from poverty and become a respectable citizen and serve the nation...
Help the poor, serve your parents, fight for depressed...it all comes under Islamic Jihad...unfortunately now it is restricted to" holy petroleum Jihad".....

Police said that during the interrogation, Ahad appeared highly radicalized whereas Baba and Nowfal are on the verge of radicalization.
If this is true then any amount of counselling by expert psychologists will not help. In the case of highly educated Radicals- the psychologists say - once a radical always a radical. They will continue to be radicals through out their life. So,how long the police and Central agencies can keep the three under surveillance?
Only the illiterate or Semi-literate radicals can be counselled and convinced to shed their fanaticism.

..I think Govt playing safe here..walking on tight rope..it knows very well that there is overwhelming evidence on radicalized youth in INDIA..but dont want to expose to public fearing it may further attract people towards ISIS..In Maharastra, particularly foucus is on JI run institution..even during UPA/Congress rule it found evidence against these institution..now police dept started visiting these college to found out radicalised student & to deradicalise..its high time that the sickular parties which put pressure on RSS & affiliates, should also put pressure on JI parivar..otherwise they will loose a chance to recover from quick sand of radicalisation..there is also immense responsibility on the community which always tend to reel under propaganda..today JAPAN joined list of countries fearing Islamophobia..

The Police intelligent team must have grilled and released them with warnings only after authentic evaluation and estimation of their travel itinerary. The local newspapers here say that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has closed all it borders and given shoot at sight orders those who may try to infiltrate. So one can imagine how serious the situation may be these days.Similarly the Indian Government should revoke the Passports of those who reach Turkey until the Turkey borders are sealed too.Jordan is the only country bearing the brunt with enormous refugee problems to sort out and the UN aid workers are assisting them.

There is so much illiteracy and poverty amongst Muslims around them in Chennai and Bangalore. Instead of doing social service here why these morons went to Turkey and tried to enter Syria.
Internet and Social media is filled with all material to radicalise any fools like Ahad. It is stupidity for a person want to enter war zone with his five children.
Government should find means and ways to regularly block the jehadi propaganda sites and keep a tab on the stuff shared on social media.

Arshad, did you know AHAd is highly qualified engineer who has been world over and has high paying job! this is the case of literate ones! but illiterate and poor muslims are real torch bearers of humanity! I see so many here in Mumbai streets doing odd jobs, taxi drivers, dhobhis, cart pullers, Paav/bakery item suppliers, tarkariwalas.. all have a skull cap, trade mark beard etc and also do 5 time namaz and rest of those devout muslims! BUT THEY ARE NEVER A THREAT- but those people are unnecessarily harassed, doubted upon, and get hurt first during any riot, BECAUSE, these LITERATE BA###RDS have screwed up their image! that is the main problem and I dont think community big wigs ever addresses it! poor goes on to become poor and Gaddaars are richer, thanks to Pakistan kind of radical countries which brainwash the educated youth! Sad affairs... Watch movie "BABY"! you will feel proud, of Indian muslims, a feroz, who heads a big covert team on mission! or a Youth techie, who comes forward and exposes the politician like Taufiq or, a deep asset AshFaq who helps secret service and intel operation in Saudi, extremely smart Hani Mohammed a indian origion cop in Saudi Arabia, who cracks the case, but helps Indian team get away for the crime of killing a filthy Paki agent like Bilal or MAULANA from pakistan who brainwashes all of them! Things need to be changed for good!

I thank the police and the government for not arresting them but left them with a stern warning and also the police have to monitor their activities.
