Mumbai, Aug 9: Govinda’s wife, Sunita Ahuja, has opened up about the turbulent early days of her relationship with the Bollywood star, recalling painful incidents from her school days and the strong opposition they faced from her family.

Sunita revealed that her romance with Govinda began when she was in Class 8 and he had just completed college. Her parents, particularly her father, disapproved of the relationship, especially when it affected her studies. “I failed my Class 8 exams and lied to my mother about passing. She heated a tawa and burnt my cheek as punishment. My mom was very strict and wanted me to study, but I hated it,” she shared in an interview with Galatta India.

Recalling another incident, Sunita said she once cut her sister’s thigh with a blade to avoid studying, admitting that the only subject she liked was maths because she “loved money.”

The couple married in 1987, keeping the wedding a secret for a year. Their daughter Tina was born when Sunita was 19. “I was still a child when I became a mother,” she said. Her father did not attend the wedding due to disapproval of Govinda’s financial status at the time.

In the same interview, Tina spoke about her parents’ contrasting backgrounds. “My mom lived in Pali Hill and came from a rich family. My dad was from Virar, struggling to become an actor. It was a Bollywood-style love story, but my grandfather never approved,” she said.
