Hassan, Jan 18: "Konkani Sanskratik Saanz (cultural evening) organized by Hassan Konkani Sanchalan was held at Loyola Hall at St Joseph's School here on Sunday January 14 evening.

The day was celebrated close on the heels of first-ever "Konkani Mahotsav" which was held in the month of September, 2006 which had given a new direction to Konkani movement in the Chikamagalur diocese.  The cultural evening on Sunday was a great step taken by Konkani Sanchalan Hassan in promoting and protecting Konkani in the region.

Fr Edward Rodrigues was the chief guest on the occasion while Fr Melwyn Mendonca, Fr John Crasta, Hassan Konkani Sanchalan president Praveen Veigas, honorary president Anthony Gonsalves and D Gonsalves were also present on the dais.

Speaking on the occasion Fr Edward Rodrigues called on the gathering not to forget one's mother tongue, culture and tradition.  Praveen Veigas gave a clarion call to all to unite themselves for the cause of language and culture.

Dance competition was held for the children as part of the programme while Konkani songs, jokes and skits were presented by youth and elders.

 

Earlier the gathering was welcomed by Petro Lobo in the traditional manner by offering betelnut leaves and water (paan-pod udaak).  Juliet Crasta proposed the vote of thanks while Vincent Rodrigues compered the programme.

 

The day came to an end with delicious Mangalorean meals.
