Mangaluru: Massive protest against Bhagwat, FB comments, 'conspiracy' alleged

Mangaluru, Mar 4: The Indian Catholic Youth Movement (ICYM) unit of Mangaluru diocese on Wednesday March 4 staged a protest in front of the DC's office here condemning the recent statement by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat on Mother Teresa, and derogatory comments against Christianity posted by Shriram Yadapaditthaya on Facebook.

Addressing the protestors Vincent Alva Pamboor said, "With the name of Lord Rama in his name, Shriram Yadapadtthaya should not be passing such comments against Christianity. But I urge the Christian youth to forgive him. I also urge the police not to take any stingent action against him. Jesus Christ will bless his mother and family," he said.

On comments against Mother Teresa by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat that she served the poor with the intention of converting them to Christianity, Vincent said, "Mohan Bhgavat is not fit to pass any comment against Mother Teresa. She is responsible for the revolution of social service in India. Was it necessary for her to come here and serve the destitutes for the sake of conversion? I agree that Mother converted a Hindu to be a true Hindu and a Muslim to be true Muslim. And if Mother had conveted people by luring them then there is no meaning to Christianity. People converted to Christianity only because they admired the service rendered by the Mother."

Speaking about an incident where Mother Teresa was accused by a few in Kolkata of conversion, Vincent Alva said, "Mother had faced the allegations of conversion when she was alive. When they had demanded that the Mother be asked to leave the place, the SP of the place said that he would do so, only if their mothers and sisters would serve the poor as she did. Such was the dedication Mother Teresa had towards the people suffering from various illnesses."

He further added, "In the recently held Hindu Samajotsava the good word of Bhagavad Geeta had to be spread among the people belonging to the great Hindu religion. Instead, a young girl spoke of things beyond her age and without understanding the reality. It is a conspiracy by some people to divide the society and make the universal religion of Hinduism narrow. I have to sincerely thank Bhagwat for giving me an opportunity to speak about Mother Theresa."

Taking a dig at Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat he said, "I respect you (Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat) as a leader of Hindu religion. You own a group of institutions. You tell about conversion in our district. Please show us the proof, otherwise there is no point in making baseless allegations."

Secretary of CITU D K Sunil Kumar Bajal speaking on the occasion, alleged that it is the conspiracy of right wing leaders to target minorities. "Mohan Bhagwat does not have any moral right to say anything about Mother Teresa. They consider minorities as second grade citizens. If there would not have been Christian institutions in the district the scheduled castes and tribes would not have got education. If Christians had to engage in conversion they would not have served the society," he said.

President of Konkani Sahitya Academy Roy Castelino said, "It is a conspiracy to target minorities. They speak about cleaning India but let them clean problems like corruption, communalism and terrorism. I thank the police commissioiner and all the police personnel for arresting Shriram Yadapaditthaya. I also thank the Cathloic youth and leaders for having registered complaints in 25 police stations against the derogatory comments."

At the end of the protest a candlelight vigil was also observed and the gathered crowd prayed for world peace.

About one thousand people participated in the protest.

ICYM ex-president Sheldon Crasta, vicar general of Mangaluru diocese Fr Denis Moras Prabhu, ICYM diocese director Fr Ronald Dsouza, Krishnappa Konchady were among those present.

well said.. And if all catholics feeling bad where are members of Catholic Sabha, where are important Catholic diocesan leaders in this protest. Why they are not in protest. Why Roy cannot bring them together and protest. They are not feeling bad? And why and how Roy can be part of protest which means he is not supporting his own government or is opposing his own government. If Roy is so worried about such developments why cannot he organize different Catholic outfits which he is member and lead a protest instead of joining other political parties like CPIM.. Instead of joining political party in protest against his own government Roy and his supporters should filed complaint against K Prabhakar Bhat who gave a damaging statement and even against Bhagvath. File defamation case and then see the real fun. Now we are believing Roy has no faith in his own government.

Friends ... Im unhapy with many such incidents that happens in mangalore .. after a great strugle you hae made Congress party to win in mangalore and its surrounding .. but this is not benefiting the society ..Hate crimes against anyone has to be condemned by all and one can understand some Catholic organisations protesting against hate crime posted on fb. But what our Karnataka Konkani Sathithya Academy President Roy Castelina is doing in these protest, being part of it is something to be worrisome. Is he protesting or is he trying to defend the government or against the crime? It is not clear to me. That is what the basic issue here.

How nice and peaceful protest by my Christian brethren. An excellent lesson to all other communities. If a Hindu protest takes place immediately shops will shut down their doors, don’t think it is their support. Business owners scared that they are all chors will loot their shops protest is only for name sake intention is to loot shops and disturbs peace and nothing else.

Regarding Mohan Bhagat’s comments on Mother Teresa. I feel she has done a humanity work to the sick, downtrodden, orphans and so on as per her religion. “Unfortunately as a per Hinduism those who effected by leprosy it is a curse from God and they should die a painful death”. When Mother saw their pain and suffering as per her religion she loved them cleaned them treated them and those patients died a peaceful death which our Hindu brethren can not tolerate. May be against their religion to help the leprosy patients and if they are helping now it’s only because of Mother Teresa taught them to do so but this truth they can not accept.

First of all I congratulate the Christian leaders who helped in showing this strength of solidarity in these testing times.
Secondly to only ( since majority Hindus know the facts and truth) those ignorant Hindu friends of mine - I have reiterated this umpteen number of times but I dont mind posting it once more... In 2001 India had a 2.36% of Christian population which has declined to 2.27 in 2011. These statistics are provided by the National Census Regulatory board - Govt of India which obviously is not a Christian organisation. If conversions were taking place as claimed, then these figures should have been higher.
Also the British never came and converted in India. Just imagine they were in India for almost FIVE HUNDRED years and if they really intended they could have converted entire India into Christianity in just 100 years of their rule.
Christianity was not brought to India by Portuguese, Italians, Brits etc, but rather Christianity is India is more than 2000 years old, and landed in India along with St. Thomas who was an apostle of Christ.
All our Bhagwaths, Sadhvis and the likes of Sriram must get their facts, figures and history right before just blabbering publicly to gain cheap publicity.
The biggest religion in the world is Humanity and if we are all able to respect it, then we have great chance to live peacefully.

Vellano: I work for a MNC and i have always wanted to do some work in the society. My professional aspirations are different from my personal aspirations. I dont do any of the social work for gains buts for a sense of satisfaction that someone who is deprieved also gets a opportunity to experience life, may not be to the extent that i do but atleast better than what that person is experiencing..
Now lets talk about Mother Theresa.. Have you ever been to the place where she was working with the people? i havent but what i have heard is that its beyond anyone's comprehension and level of tolerance/acceptance. Leprosy was and is still to a certain extent a disease where most of the victims are not just neglected but rejected by the society. Mother cared for the society inflicted by this dreaded disease and spent most of her time with the victims who didnt have anyone and were in thier death bed.

Now as for the allegations of her converting these people in the name of service.. what do you think she gained out of it.. Many say there is money in conversion, as the latest figure of 4lakhs per re-conversion.. Have you ever heard or seen (maybe even on internet) that Mother lived a forget a lavish but a comfortable life?? if she did get funded for the work she did which as per Mohan B is for the conversion then where did the money go?? or was Mother just doing conversion hoping that she will get a slice of the heaven? Wake up my freind.. I know conversions are happening, but is it forceful? even if someone converts in the name of service then that still is the converts wish.. I can take a horse to the water my friend but not make it drink.i can only show the water and even maybe dance in front of the water, but The horse will only drink the water when it wants..
Now for Mohan B expressing his personal views, for someone of his cadre its suits when he does such in his confines and maybe debate over it.. But not in a public meeting and instigating the masses.

Mother Theresa was a great saint. Her sole purpose in her mission was to serve Christ - "SEVA" - with Love. Her service was to serve Jesus in the form of the most poor and abandoned. There will always be those who question the sincerity and achievements of such souls. It is a sacrifice that all saints accept. Even Jesus had his critics and still loved them even upon the cross. Were Mother Theresa alive today she would still look upon her most vocal critics and enemies with the grace of God's love. That is the nature of a saint.

Mr. Mohan Bhagwat really likes to trigger friction and fight in the society. He may be turning as the biggest headache of India in creating religious disorder.

why do you think so? he just gave his opinion! eveyrone has one, just like rear hole!

when Sakshi Maharaj said, "let hindus have 4 babies".. just see how many reacted to it here in Daiji. When they know, it was a suggestion to Hindu society.. their internal matter.. havent we all given our 2 bits and condemned him for those words..? he wasn't askign any other religions to do this or that! he was talking to his own people! why should I get affected because of that? but in eagerness to condemn, we all mockked the sadhvi sankul of hinduism! think about it!

Even in protest how much simplicity, forgiveness and respect to others and that is the greatness of Catholic & no evil forces can take away this from catholics.Same time I saw in many vocations how beautifully some Hindu brothers in Daijiworld respecting the Christians. Really we are grateful to them.

Nice peaceful protest! Sriram needs to be taught a lesson. Perfectly justified demands. Well done police~

but Still, I am not able to understand the contention as to what "Bhagwat" said about Mother Teresa! she is a human being and somebody criticised her work, in their own prism and perspective! I think that is allowed in democracy!... why being touchy on that topic? ...! It is like I didnt like one movie of Amitabh bachan and if I criticise it, people here will tell me, first you go and act in a movie and show? aat panpina hakk laa ijja..? Can somebody tell me, how it is wrong, to question one's profession..?

in late 90s I did a lot of work in NGO, for AIDS patient! trust me,if I look back, it was more of a job to me! and I was doing it for my money! I dont consider it as a SEVA at all! I dervied some satisfaction due to it. but then I didnt do it, to help poor, or me to reach heaven or any of those sorts! So, if somebody tells me, you did for just money. "Okay fine!" how will my work be small or great if he praises? thats all my moot point here.! no offence meant!

Shanbhag is doing lot much to help consumer forum cases. he helps all religion people. but if he takes bribe or does some conversions, then it will be wrong, NOT A SEVA!

There are so many parisara samithis done in our region.. just to protest! all made good money and made a career! so, if someone says its a SEVA, I will say "po maraya"! what is wrong? think with some rationale!

don't try to be smart here. Go and ask bhagawat proof of conversion. You just can't blame or point someone because you just don't have anything else to talk. Or you are just jealous. Shame on you.

I a nit being smart... you are... if you want proof..go and ask Bhagwat yourself. Best thing to do is if you are hurt, GO AND FILE AND FIR and go for a defamation suit! .. Once things will be in court, every claim has to be substantiated with proofs. if required SIT and other things can be done, to enquite that period!... things will come out in open!.. Game? I will grab a popcorn and sit!

Vellano: I work for a MNC and i have always wanted to do some work in the society. My professional aspirations are different from my personal aspirations. I dont do any of the social work for gains but for a sense of satisfaction that someone who is deprived also gets a opportunity to experience life, may not be to the extent that i do but atleast better than what that person is experiencing..

I know conversions are happening, but is it forceful? even if someone converts in the name of service then that
still is the converts wish..
But not in a public meeting and instigating the masses

Persecution, death, humiliation, threat are the seeds of Christian growth. Unless there is persecution, the message of the Gospel will not reach the ends of the earth. The words of Jesus are so true "they will persecute you because you are my disciples", "if they hate you, remember they hated me before you". Our only strong defense is the Holy Spirit and we should protect ourselves by prayers and praying for one another. Let the Lord decide if we should be protected or persecuted to bear witness to His Holy Name Jesus. Let us not curse our tormentors and enemies but pray for them. Our forefathers have faced hungry lions and other wild beasts, torture, burnings while these small persecutions are like straws to us.
