Mangaluru, Mar 22: "Students are the assets of the nation, they should walk in the right path and never become a burden to the nation. Private institutions play a vital role in the field of education. The state goverment is supporting many colleges which have contributed many years to education," said minister for higher education and tourism, R V Deshpande.

He was addressing the annual Academic Convention and felicitation programme to Dr A M Narahari, registrar of St Aloysius College (autonomous) organised by the Association of Mangalore University College Teachers (AMUCT) at St Aloysius College here on March 22.

He further said, "There is a need for quality in education. The teachers have to mould students and make them assets of the nation. If I am here today, it is because of my teachers. I strongly believe India will be a powerful nation by 2030.

"The curriculum in colleges should help students get good jobs. The colleges also have to focus on providing value education and physical education. The usage of technolgy brings clarity in learning. Diploma courses on information technology were made online for the first time Karnataka. The state promotes technology," he added.

"There are many government colleges too that provide quality education but people fail to recognize this fact. We talk about the failure of the state government but never speaking about the good works done by the state goverment," he said.

"A lecturer has to spend 16 hours on teaching and six hours on research as per UGC guidelines. The state goverment has no say in it," he said.

Fr Swebert D'Silva, principal of St Aloysius College delivered the welcome address.

Dr A M Narahari was felicitated by minister R V Deshpande for his service of 37 years to the field of education.

Acknowleging the honour, Dr A M Narahari expressed his gratitude and said, "I never desired honours, but today love and support of everyone made me accept this honour. I will not forget this moment of receiving the honour from the higher education minister. I thank my wife for being supporting me throughout."

AMUCT Bulletin was release by R V Deshpande on the occasion.

Dr Kumara Hegde compered the programme, and the vote of thanks was proposed by convener Dr Ummappa P.

MLA J R Lobo, MLC Ivan D'Souza, AMUCT president Dr Norbert Lobo, general secretary Dr Lakshminarayana Bhat, Joslyn Lobo, Prof Ravindra Reshme, and others were present.

Speaking to media persons on the sidelines of the programme, he said, "Everyone should live a healthy life, and must get educated. Education without health is of no use. We will try to introduce sports policy as an optional subject. We want the welfare of students. Affordable education, value education, and usage of technology in higher eduation is our aim.

Regarding extension of grants to colleges, he said, "The proposal is with the finance department, and we are waiting for cabinet clearence. It will then be provided to aid colleges that face shortage of lecturers or any other problems."

The speaker and event seem quite genuine and have performed great services. However I question "Should students become assets of the nation?" Is the sole purpose of education to help students get good jobs and support the state's promotion of technology? Whatever became of teaching our citizens to think for themselves and to live ethically with one another? When you closely examine the curriculum of our schools, you will notice an absence of the social, religious and liberal arts and sciences. If we are not careful, perhaps this focus on jobs and technology to the exclusion of our humanity will eventually lead to the degeneration of our society.
Please understand this: There will never be enough "technological" employment for our millions of youth in India. The speaker of course seems well meaning It sounds good - he has attained his goals- but to assume that all of those who attend college will meet with the same success in technology and information sciences is unrealistic.
This same paradigm approach to education has gone on in many western countries for many years...In the USA, many with advanced degrees in engineering and technology are unable to find jobs. What has occurred, in fact, is that many financial institutions and investors have formed schools and colleges for their own profit while echoing broad platitudes about the need for more technological education. The end result: NO JOBS!!!
