Govt allows pharma companies to hike prices of 509 essential drugs

New Delhi, Apr 9 (PTI): The government has allowed pharmaceutical companies to hike rates of 509 essential medicines used for treating various ailments like diabetes, hepatitis and cancer by 3.84 per cent with effect from April 1.

The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) has issued a notification for price hike of drugs in line with the wholesale price index of 2014 under Drug Price Control Order (DPCO), 2013.

“As confirmed by the economic adviser (Minister of Commerce and Industry), the annual increase in the wholesale price index (WPI) works out at 3.84 per cent during calendar year 2014 over the corresponding period in 2013,” NPPA said in a notification.

The 509 medicines which have become costlier include Alpha Interferon injection used to treat hepatitis B and C as well as certain types of cancer, carboplatin injection used for cancer treatment and fluconazole capsules indicated for fungal infections, among others.

Welcoming the decision, Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance (IPA) Secretary General D G Shah told PTI: “It is a part of the policy. Pharmaceutical companies don’t get a chance to hike prices (more than once) a year. This price hike is linked to inflation.”

Prices of condoms, which are also part of the list of essential medicines, have also gone up due to cost revision.

According to the notification, antibiotics which have Amoxicillin capsules have also become costlier with effect from April 1.

At present, the government caps prices of a total of 348 essential medicines based on the simple average of all medicines in a particular therapeutic segment with sales of more than 1 per cent.

Besides, the government regulates prices of all other medicines and companies are allowed to hike prices of such drugs by only up to 10 per cent in a year.

The government had notified DPCO, 2013, which covers 680 formulations, with effect from May 15, 2014, replacing the 1995 order that regulated prices of only 74 bulk drugs.

People in India have lived thier life in the form of subsidies, which is a burdern for a tax payer like me.

People like to enjoy all the bhagyaas (Shaadi, Medicine, LPG) given by the goverment, without even knowing out it hurts the economy...

Stop all these subsidies and with the subsidy amount we should ensure feed the needy ones.

Sri Guru: Have you ever visited some of the poorest villages and slums of India?

Some of the U.S. friends I have told me that they are fed up with the complaints of their children in their food, clothing etc. They are not all thankful for what they have.

I told them the remedy. Take them to Haiti, else take them to the some other neighboring countries to show their slums that face to face experience will change the mindset of the children.

Some of them did and thanked me for my advice.

If you think that everybody is like you in India, my friend, please pay a visit to some of the slums of India. You can find them in every State of India before giving elaborate lectures dissuading subsidies. If any customer is not deserving subsidies, stop that.

Far less than the 45%, but the whole nation will be faced with serious economic challenges because with all the deeply rooted rigid capitalism in the mindset of Mr. Modi, he is trying to drive the nation in that direction. I don't believe in communism or socialism, but in the free enterprise system and the promotion of all the sections of the society to be productive citizens. If we think that the unemployment of India can be solved through establishing a few mega factories-building 6 lane national highways and a few dream cities, that is totally a misconception. One person in Bangaladesh got Nobel Prize for his revolutionary idea in "micro financing" which put millions of poor people to the working status, lifted from poverty to self-sufficiency. Get his advice, thus start some massive "micro financing" projects.

If the 400 million poorest people are not considered as Indian citizens and trash them, but only focusing only the rich, that is terribly a wrong way driving.

The rich and the richest of India will be getting richer, but the rest in the nation will be faced with another experience.

That's why Ponnappa, A recent survey said that even though Modi has retained his popularity, but if elections are held now, NDA will get around 200 seats only!. Also price increase of drugs came only a day after corporates expressed unhappiness over the losing sheen of BJP government!. To to make them happy, price is increased!.

BJP's slogan before and during elections was 'BJP is the answer to price rise'!!!. I don't know how people interpreted this slogan and voted but today after nearly a year in office BJP has really stuck to their promise!!!
