Played no role in doctor's resignation: Bayern coach Guardiola

Munich, April 17 (IANS): Bayern Munich manager Pep Guardiola on Friday insisted he had no part to play in club doctor Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt's decision to quit the club, but remained tight-lipped on his surprise exit.

The doctor ended almost 40 years of service when he announced his decision to quit along with his staff on Friday citing reasons which included their being blamed for the Champions League 1-3 defeat against Porto on Wednesday.

According to media reports in Germany, the resignation came as a result of an argument between Hans and chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. There have also been rumours of a rift between the medical staff and Guardiola.

However, Guardiola has denied any altercation with the doctor.

"Nothing happened between us. It was his decision, I have great respect for him. I can only respect the decision. That is all," Guardiola was quoted as saying by goal.com on Friday.

Bayern Munich also released a statement thanking the doctor for his services over the years.

"Bayern Munich regret Dr. Hans-Wilhelm Müller Wohlfahrt's decision to leave his role as club doctor. Especially Dr. Müller-Wohlfahrt, but also his team, did first-class work for the club and its players. We are particularly grateful for this," the release said on Friday.

"Bayern will soon announce a successor for the medical department. Till then Dr. Volker Braun, specialist for orthopaedics and sports physician, will accompany the team of FC Bayern to their matches."
