Don't spread falsehood: Airtel on net neutrality

New Delhi, Apr 19 (PTI): Finding itself at the receiving end of the Net-neutrality campaign, telecom giant Bharti Airtel today said "falsehood" is being spread in the name of a debate on keeping Internet equally accessible for all.

Bharti Airtel, which has over 22 crore mobile subscribers, has already reached out to its customers and employees through e-mails and social media to present its case on the Net neutrality issue.

There has been a huge uproar on different social media platforms against the telecom operator's 'Airtel Zero' plan, as also against Facebook'sinternet.org platform among others.

"We are totally in favour of having debate, but a debate and spreading falsehood are not the same thing. I can disagree with you but we should not lie about you. We thought clearest way of countering myth was laying out of our four pledges on Net neutrality in public domain, making sure that everyone was aware about our position," Airtel Consumer Business Director Srinivasan Gopalan told PTI in an interview.

Airtel has been at the centre of this whole debate after the launch of 'Zero plan' early this month. Under the scheme, Airtel customers will get free access to mobile applications available through Airtel Zero application. Such applications will be required to pay some fees to Airtel for coming on to Airtel Zero platform.

"Some sections have twisted the debate. We have reiterated comment on Net neutrality by reaching out to our customers, employees through email and social media," Gopalan said.

The social media campaign of the company says that it "will do what it takes to help bring every Indian online, rich or poor; no blocking, no fast lanes, never done it, never will; enable all developers, big or small, on an equal basis and the dream of digital India is our dream too".

Internet activists are of the view that Airtel Zero is violating the principle of Net neutrality and has a discriminatory approach.

"It is marketing choice that developer is using. As far as discrimination is concerned if you take that logic forward then any form of marketing is discrimination. There are paid searches on the Internet too. Airtel Zero is completely non-discriminatory platform. Anybody can sign for big or small by paying same tariff," Gopalan said.

He said that people construing the debate are "missing entire big picture of digital India, connecting billion people who are unconnected. We don't see any conflict in two goals at all of being pro-Net neutrality and pro-digital inclusion. In our view the two goals have to go hand in hand".

On TRAI getting a huge number of reactions on Net neutrality, he said that major response in favour of Net neutrality is a good thing.

Gopalan said, "This (debate) is not about telecom company versus social media. We are happy to work with OTT (over-the- top players like WhatsApp, Skype etc). We are very supportive of OTT ecosystem. We work very closely with social media."

He said the company has written to its employees but only to explain its stand and not to force views on them.

Paper news and Internet news are two different logics. If you see, you are reading news on internet what you want to know. That is net neutrality.
What would have happened, if you were charged Rs.x for reading each news article on net instead of charging you bases on KB/MBs?. What if, if you were given unknown language news for free but were charged for reading your known language? Of course you wouldn't read it.
I Hope now you get what net Neutrality is!!!

And for Flipkart and Amazon, they are business rivals. If all the countries started to think like the way you think, then India wouldn't have got any business, as most of the ideas & Jobs are taken from overseas.

Remember!! When we are ready to give something, we get something!!

that is exactly my opinion, if you are into spreading news, be it news paper or Internent business, why shouldn't they charge accordingly? Internet is not a GOVERNMENT owned item!... TRAI can regulate it..! they are not here for charity! if they agree to give you some free stuff and then they charge for premium service, what is wrong in it? how come govt can say no to them!? why shouldnt tatasky be free with one single subscription.. why different charges for different channels?...

the best part of "net neutrality" is no one knows what they are outraging against! just like Land acquistion bill!... the poor and desiring people should not get easy information and internet is what these people are professing, coupled with their own "brand wars"! ...All In Bakchod, who have no idea of technology, are outraging against Net neutrality, with "FLIPKART"'s case! because flipkart is an indian company run by two IIT grads- there is big defaming campaign going on at the behest of amazon kinds!.. so they used AIB- who when asked to bend, will crawl as seen in Archbishop apology letter and talk about "FREE THINKING"! wow... and who is their main source of funding ... SNAPDEAL , a rival for FLIPKART! vhe vhe vhe our media and all thise ad agencies are sold out! and everybody is creating a false propaganda in the name of net neutrality!

You give 5Rs to your news paper, then why can't you choose which page you want see which news and which all news should be covered? why a editor has to decide that?! more over, why shoudl I pary for their BIG FIRST PAGE AD of AMZAON, always? I am paying for news, not ads! can they make a ad free newspaper? Just countering their logic!

Almost all net service providers have some kind of disparity or monopoly. Also their propaganda about its benefits to customers is equally vague , EG: Reliance internet org is free for Fb or wiki only if you have internet plan. Also fb pages will not show images , or else standard charges apply. And Facebook supporting it as pro poor , is equally rediculous. Government has to step in , Fb and whats app have inflated billions worth , so before this bubbles burst they will start charging customers to save themselves from bankruptcy. Govt has to step in and should make Net neutrality mandatary.

As an internet Service Provider, Airtel shouldn't be influencing the choice of their customers. By Airtel Zero, they are exactly doing it. Internet is a great leveler and everything was at our mouse click. Not anymore.. Now Zuckerberg (internet.org) and ISP’s will decide what the poor (or people who don’t want to pay) will access. If there was no #Netneutrality in 2004, we won’t be knowing Facebook or that matter Zuckerberg now. Let ISP’s be Internet Service Providers, not decision makers.

First it was on charging Skype. Then differential internet access and preferential bandwidth. Mind. the initiative is from Airtel, the most greedy corporate of modern India next to Reliance. Backing of Flipkart made them wise, with no options. Else they would have hammered down their plan on innocent internet users. Crony capitalism and greedy corporates. Airtel wont keep quite and watch out for next initiative. Having meddled with whole affair, they do not have options other than to come out with letters to customers and employees. When shown the place, they express willingness to debate. If Flipkart was not withdrawn from the deal, can we expect Airtel to be moderate like this?
