Bengaluru, May 21: Finally, the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), is on its own to having its own campus.

Work on developing the campus, which was bogged down due to land acquisition and legal dispute, will commence at Archakarahalli in Ramanagaram district soon.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who chaired meeting with legislators and officials of various departments, has directed the Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB) to hand over 145 acres to the Medical Education Department to develop the campus.

The JD(S)-BJP coalition Government had decided to shift the RHUHS to Ramanagaram from Bengaluru in 2007.

Developing the new campus was delayed owing to legal dispute and land acquisition.

A few farmers had challenged the land acquisition process in the Supreme Court.

Officials have been instructed to get the stay orders of the Apex Court on acquisition of lands vacated.

Karnataka’s Energy Minister D K Shivakumar, who is also Ramanagaram district in-charge minister, told reporters in Bengaluru after the meeting, that preliminary notification was issued for 247 acres and final notification for 216 acres.

About Rs 600 crore would be required to develop the new campus of RGUHS. The Government was firm on developing the campus at Archakarahalli, he said.

The Chief Minister has also directed the Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board and Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board to prepare a project report to provide drinking water supply to Ramanagaram town.
